This is ironic on so many levels. One is that the EU has discouraged assimilation at the behest of the Arab League and Muslim leaders in Europe since 1973 -- see Bat Ye'or's Eurabia. The other irony is that statements like Straw's were calls to assimilate -- and were greeted only with hostility by Muslim leaders. From AP, with thanks to Fjordman:
Stratford-Upon-Avon, England: Interior ministers from six of Europe's most populous nations met to seek ways to curtail alienation among the continent's Muslims.The issue topped the agenda of the interior ministers of Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Poland who concluded a two-day summit yesterday.
Concerns about alienation of European Muslims were highlighted by violence in the deprived suburbs of Paris, where youths - many from immigrant families - set three buses on fire before the first anniversary of three weeks of rioting that raged there last year.
Relations between Europe's Muslims and non-Muslims have become a contentious issue around the continent, with strains growing and many fearing that increasing numbers of disaffected young people are being seduced by extremism.
The ministers agreed to work together to promote integration and said they would stage media campaigns and public events to try to persuade young Muslims to reject radical ideologies and embrace democratic values.
They said they would target young audiences with messages from 'secular Muslim' role models as part of the effort.
A debate over the veils some women wear has prompted emotionally charged arguments about minority groups' identities and integration. Former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw set off the argument by announcing he had asked Muslim women to remove their veils when they came for meetings in his district office.

It is good that the Muslims are the ones who refuse to assimilate.............this gives the politicians a real problem...............

1)Let the police do their job and crack some skulls.
2)Arrest and/or deport those mule-ahs who incite this sort of crap.
3)Stop accepting more immigrants from "cesspoolia".
How hard is it to implement these ideas? Let just one country try it and see what happens. If one nation can take itself out of the jaws of Islamania the rest will follow.

Why do these rioters regard themselves as living in "deprived suburbs"? In the context of the kind of accommodation their forbears were used to they are living in a land of milk and honey. They are bloody lucky to be where they are now and should not complain.
Cound this be the reason why so many want to come to Northern Europe?

I suggest that any persons residing in any of those 6 European countries send the interior ministers this article and the ones immediately preceding and following it ("Fear of religious conflict in Belgium" and "It's OK to kill gays -- British imam") for them to gain some perspective.
They need to go back to the drawing board.

This is at least a positive step in that they see that there is an issue, and its a strategy that they have to try while bashing the heads of the extremists. I see this as yet another sign of the turning of the tide.
Come on, don't see everything so negatively. One way to beat Islam is to turn away turn away from Islam the younger secular people so they do not call themselves Muslims, we do that and we win, the extremists are dead meat after that...
Instead of targeting us whites, they are targeting the problem areas, I have my eyes open that it is the EU and will most probably fail due to corruption, incompetence and left wing watering down, but its at least something that is a step in the right direction.

Here are two solutions:
(1) Europe needs a Robespierre again to decapitate the elites ...figuratively of course, providing they go peacefully; otherwise...get rid of them. And after he is done with that, he can go on and liberate the media from its leftist masters.
(2) The Islamists love sharia law. Give them a good dose of it to enjoy at the receiving end. Give all Muslims in Western countries dhimmi status and make them pay a very larger jizza tax, one that is progressively higher the bigger the family. Make them "feel subdued" in the language of the hadith. Impose all the dhimmi rules on them. Make them want out! But unlike the fate of the dhimmi in Muslim countries, give them a way out. A one-way slow boat back to the desert and never be allowed to return.
