Archaeologist says Islamic head scarves linked to sex rites, will stand trial in Turkey

Let them into the EU! Here is yet another example of just how far modern, secular Turkey is from genuine pluralism and freedom of inquiry.

"Archaeologist: Islamic head scarves linked to sex rites," from AP, with thanks to PRCS (see also Western Resistance):

A 92-year-old retired archaeologist will stand trial in Turkey for claiming that Islamic-style head scarves date back more than 5,000 years - several millennia before the birth of Islam - and were worn by priestesses who initiated young men to sex.

Muazzez Ilmiye Cig, an expert on the ancient Sumerian civilization of Mesopotamia between the fourth and third millennia BCE, is the latest person to go on trial in Turkey for expressing opinions, despite intense European Union pressure on the country to expand such freedom as freedom of expression. Her trial is scheduled to start in Istanbul on Wednesday.

She joins dozens of other writers, journalists and academics who have been prosecuted, including this year's Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk and novelist Elif Shafak....

The trial begins a week before a crucial European Union report on Turkey's progress toward membership, which is expected to chide Turkey for slipping in reforms and not acting to change laws that have been used to curb freedoms - in violation of EU human rights standards.

The trial against Cig was initiated by an Islamic-oriented lawyer who was offended by claims made in her recently published political book, "My Reactions as a Citizen," in which she says that the earliest examples of head scarves date back to Sumerian times, when priestesses who helped young men learn sex veiled themselves.

Unlike Pamuk and Shafak, who were tried under Turkey's notorious Article 301, which sets out punishment for insulting the Turkish Republic, its officials or "Turkishness," Cig is accused of "inciting religious hatred." She could face 1 1/2 years in prison if found guilty.

An avowed secularist, Cig gained public attention when she wrote to Emine Erdogan, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's wife, urging her to take off her head scarf and set an example to women in this predominantly Muslim and secular country, where more and more women are veiling themselves in a show of religious piety.

Secularists like Cig view the head scarf as a symbol of political Islam and of female oppression.

Turkey has strict secular laws and regulations. Head scarves are banned in schools and in public offices.

Erdogan, whose party has roots in Turkey's Islamic movement, has made no secret of his desire to relax the laws on head scarves. Cautious of sensitivities of pro-secular circles, including the powerful military, however, he has said that he would bide his time on the issue.

Pro-secularist groups were expected to turn out in force at the trial in a show of support to the archaeologist, who retired in 1972 and has written 13 books.

UPDATE: Good news: she has been acquitted.

Yes, let's rush this criminal right into jail. Those 92 year olds really are a threat to law and order when they get at the truth.

Only in Islamania.

Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Light of the World and our Salvation:

This theory makes perfect sense to me. Do we see in any other "religion" than Islam, this complete concentration on regimenting outward appearance/speech, with all rewards being of a sensual and fleshly nature? It is clear, therefore, that many elements of Islam grew out of ancient pagan practices.

How true, ISLAMISFORLOSERS, it's amazing how easily allah is threatened. His majesty and power must be pretty pitiful if these people feel they must defend him against any and all questions or exploration.

Muazzez Ilmiye Cig's read of ancient history is correct. Ancient temple prostitutes were usually in "purdah" so that the worshipper would be focused on the goddess during copulation and not on her human representative.

This even shows up in the Torah (Genesis/Bereshit 38) where when Judah refused to honour his pledge to Tamar, she disguised herself as a temple prostitute and offered herself to her father-in-law Judah. She claimed his staff and signet as pledge of payment. When she later became pregnant and Judah accused her of fornication, she produced the staff and signet and identified Judah himself as the father. Judah did not recognize that he was having sex with his own daughter-in-law because she was veiled.

Ancient Greek and Roman sculptures of Dionysian rites in Anatolia also show the women to have their heads and sometimes their faces veiled. Ilmiye Cig is a qualified scholar and the truth should be its own defence.

Whether true or not, scholarly or not... we need more of this in a steady stream from a variety of sources and locations.

If the ummah has been trained to treat beliefs as facts, fabrication as history and lies as truth and have no tools to distinguish these things from one another.... why don't we begin a sustained campaign of hoax and rumor mongering to assault the six pillars of Islam, Mohammed, the traditions, the mannerisms, the customs.

We have a great unwashed stooge state in the ummah al-islmayya which is primed for just this sort of manipulation. Let's turn themselves against themselves through the vulnerabilities their system of Total Regulation of Life and Thought and also use the underpinning of Inshallah Fatalism against them. Destroy their prison of the mind by rattling it and shrinking its size. Crush their framework by the heavy weights of rumor, innuendo and simple slanderous lies. Why not?

Assalamau Laikum all,

A silly scarf argument should not preclude Turkey... the most able and free muslim country in the ME to join the EU.

Scarves probably were used before the advent of Islam. Most likely they were worn to keep the hot sun off their heads....so what?

What islam probably brought to this party is the veil and hijab to ehh..."complete the picture and complete the womens".

There is a need for the West to pressure Turkey to desist from this type of childish behaviour...however none of this should stop Turkey from joining. A lot of Western country companies now have Turkey provinding customers with techncal support of their products...

Rememeber Turkey is not just for christmas...it is for the EU too.

If Turkey is not allowed to join...it will after the birth of Eurabia. All it means is that Turkey will not join the EU...it will join Eurabia.

This new important continent will want Turkey in it for logistical, ethhical and military reasons.

Do the right thing here...Turkey must (be allowed to)join.

Apparently, virtually every Islamic rite and ritual is pagan in origin, including ramadan and the hajj to Mecca.

"Apparently, virtually every Islamic rite and ritual is pagan in origin, including ramadan and the hajj to Mecca."

Allah itself is a pagan Mesopotamian war god elevated to a monotheistic status through a psychopathological mechanism of Mohammed (con)fusing, then projecting and externalizing, his own Id and Superego.

Ha!Ha!Ha!Ha!Ha!

You idiot.

Turkey is traditionally served at Thanksgiving. A delicious ham is the more common centerpiece for a Christmas dinner.

P.S. When writing in English, proper nouns, like Mo, along with dates, time periods, and events (Christmas being a perfect example) are always capitalized, no matter how emotionally difficult that may be for some to do.

Turkey should never be allowed in to the EU as it will most certainly be the last nail in the coffin of Europe.

Muslims like Naseem ovbiously are taking great pleasure in watching Europe implode, and can't wait for the day that the cresent moon is the symbol over Europe. Allowing Turkey in would mean certain death spiritually and physically for many, this is hardly something to rejoice about. Some seem to think being part of a culture that is a mental straightjacket to the masses somehow is good.

Turkey as a reminder has been to the international courts on many ocassions for rulings on disputes, she has lost many times and yet never once followed up on the court rulings. These go back as far as the 1930's in disputes with Greece, Turkey only knows one way, be a bully it always works.

What would this mean for Europe at large, Turkey is still being her usual self, and yet Europeans do not see that she will insist on entry, but will never comply.

As stated time and time again, this is the time for Europe to wake up and stop the bleeding, never allow Turkey in, and never allow the Islamic doctrine to spread any more than it already has.

Very well said - kudos to you, sir.

I have been saying the same thing Ms. Cig has been saying. I am glad to have found archaeological professionals who agree with me (I didn[t know if there were any out there). James Michener's entertaining, old novel "The Source" fictionalizes ancient some of these Islamic fertility rites in the Levant.

Islam itself is a holdover from the archaic, human-sacrifice cults of the Mesopotamian region; its depiction of 'heaven' as a priapic paradise is a dead giveaway to its fertility (sex) cult origins.

PRCS,

Re : your post above at November 1, 2006 01:06 PM

Let's not be too harsh on this Muslims English and somewhat inaccurate understanding of our traditional Christmas dinners, after all at least Naseem has heard of Thanksgiving, Christmas and Turkey, which is undeniably more than I would have expected from a Muslim. Perhaps there is a glimmer of hope after all.

It is always interesting to see people argue in the emptiness of the Internet. It seems that no one can ever win an argument here. You can't because if you lose it, you lose it; and if you win it, you lose it. Well, suppose you triumph over the other man and shoot his argument full of holes and prove that he is "non compos mentis." Then what? You will feel fine. But what about him? You have made him feel inferior. You have hurt his pride. He will resent your triumph. The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it. Remember that when you do argue, attack the issue, not the person with whom you argue. Let a man save his face when you can prove he is wrong.

Naseem, I for one appreciate your pun!

Dr. Cig's agument has some merit. As Provoslavni points out, there is evidence that cult prostitutes were veiled. However, I would be curious to know what is actually present in the scanty Sumerian remains that we have.
