American nun, priest opt for dhimmitude, join Gaza standoff

It is a pity that Father Peter Dougherty and Sister Mary Ellen Gundeck didn't think to investigate the institutionalized mistreatment of Christians under Sharia law before joining those who wish to impose that Sharia. No houses would need to be destroyed if the jihadists didn't use them as bases to attack Israeli civilians. "American nun, priest join Gaza standoff," by Ibrahim Barzak for Associated Press:

BEIT LAHIYA, Gaza Strip — An American priest and nun spent several hours Wednesday at a militant's home that Israel has targeted for destruction, the first foreigners to join a weeklong standoff between Palestinian "human shields" and the Israeli air force.

Father Peter Dougherty, 65, and Sister Mary Ellen Gundeck, 55, both Michigan-based peace activists, said they were sent by God to help protect the Palestinians. The pair arrived Wednesday morning at the family home of Mohammed Baroud, a militant involved in rocket attacks on Israel.

For the past week, Palestinian militants and civilians have crowded into five militants' houses to try to thwart Israeli threats to hit them with missiles. The use of human shields is a new tactic in the Palestinians' war against Israel's mighty military.

Since militants allied with the ruling Hamas party kidnapped an Israeli soldier in June, the air force has destroyed the homes of at least 73 militants, usually after calling owners and warning residents to evacuate.

House demolitions are considered harsh punishment in crowded Gaza. Most people live in densely populated apartment blocks with extended families, and dozens are often left homeless when one building is destroyed.

Dougherty and Gundeck said they had visited several of the houses under threat on Tuesday, and on Wednesday they reached Baroud's three-story home.

"It is wrong for Israel to bomb people's houses," Dougherty said. "We are here in solidarity, and to try communicate to the world what is really going on."

The nun and priest, dressed in shirts and pants, said they were staying for several hours at each of the targeted houses. They were warmly welcomed by Ahmed Baroud, a brother of the militant.

The building's rooftop has been decorated with Palestinian political faction banners. Local leaders of the rival Hamas and Fatah groups spend the nights there, gathering around a small fire to show Israeli aircraft they are still in the targeted house.

Too bad it can't be arranged for Father Doughtery and Sister Gundek to serve as human shields in various Israeli venues because it's also wrong to blow up market places, buses, pizza parlours, falafel stands, schools, hospitals... ...but we know that for pathetic "peace" posseurs like these two, that won't happen because terrorists don't give Israelis time to clear the scene.

Do these two gormless idiots even know what kind of deadly activities Baroud has participated in?

Posted by: waterdragon52 [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 22, 2006 4:15 PM

Anyway, the latest news is that the Israelis are developing a new very high tech means of taking out the likes of Baroud without exposing their own security forces or killing "non-combatants". Necessity is the mother of invention, and Israelis are a lot more inventive than jihadis who only leverage off of western technology in the crudest ways imaginable.

Waterdragon: Sadly as a Roman Catholic, I can tell you that my Church has suffered fools such as these for well over 40 years now. But note their ages. Patience, Waterdragon. Age and illness will rid us of these Father Flakes and Sister Sunshine-Moonbeams. The Barque of Peter is coming about and righting her course.

yes WARMLY because he needed them, if he didnt and the tables were turned the nun and priest would be perfect hostages to threaten on camera with forced conversion to islam or death by slicing the throat and shouting allah ackbar.

BEVC I am not catholic (Im orthodox) but when I see people like this nun and priest the last thing I think of them is that they are real catholics. No thinking person thinks: "oh yes those are real catholics". Real catholics and other christians know enough not to "cast pearls before swine" as these two did with their lives. Christ himself told us not to do that.

These two never honored thier faith. Every church has them. Just like every mosque has its apostates. Of course as christians we dont kill our apostates as they do in Islam.

Right on. Every Christian group has its Judas.

I wonder what their bishop has to say about this? Have they been excommunicated and it's just not disclosed?

not to get off topic atheling but Im sure you know:

Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox are awaiting the meeting of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI with His Holiness Patriarch Barthalmew

http://www.patriarchate.org/

I hope they discuss this muslim madness that has gripped the world. PS I also believe the Pope has nothing to apologize re: his statement on Islam. The man was reading a historical (and accurate document) as an opening to dialogue with these lunatics.

As an Orthodox fromt the Greek church I can tell you horror stories from my ancestors in dealing with our friendly happy go luck muslims --they made sure to kill or expel every christian from Turkey and now there are under 1000 left in Istanbul.

Useful idiots.

Won't be long before they are kidnapped for ransom, and the misguided US-administration has to bail them out for several million dollars, until they do it again...

Posted by: sheik yer'mami [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 22, 2006 5:24 PM

Many so called priests and nuns have been "peace activists" since the 1960's, which in many cases was just a cover for their Marxist activities. Remember Liberation Theology down in Central America? It had nothing to do with theology and everything to do with Marxism. God save us from people who want to make our lives better by instituting systems of belief and governments that believe that the end justifys the means and that people are expendable, if the result is for the greater good.

If Fr.Dougherty and Sr. Gundeck want to commit suicide by acting as human shields in a building that houses Hamas and Fatah groups, that is their freewill choice. I say, bombs away!

StillFedUp:

In the US, MANY nuns do not wear the habit. The Carmelites still do, but most of them are cloistered. Unfortunately, as other posters have pointed out, the sixties brought us ROTTEN fruit into the Church and the priest sex scandal is one of them.

The idiocy and disobedience of this priest and nun is another example. The are a disgrace.

This whole thing reminds me of an article I saw today by David Pryce-Jones (via Melanie Phillips) about the likes of Ilan Pappe:

http://www.literaryreview.co.uk/pryce-jones_11_06.html

The quote that struck me was this:

"The final element contributing to Pappe's mindset lies in the sphere of psychology and fashion. Contemporary intellectuals have long been accustomed to glorying in an adversarial stance towards their own society, preening themselves as men of nobler spirits than the dull indifferent masses around them, and isolated not because they are foolish but because they are brave. It is a form of snobbery – moral snobbery – which is why intellectuals of this kind are so widely resented."

I personally know people of this ilk - very personally. (and Catholics come from a very intellectual tradition). This is clear evidence of what DPJ calls "moral snobbery" or what could also be called moral arrogance or any number of terms. But it still all comes down to EGO. What is so ironic about these folks is that they literally walk around imagining themselves to be above the petty Ego concerns that they imagine us mere plebes ascribing to. (I can just feel their moral arrogance oozing out of their pores while they sit on that rooftop). While meanwhile they are utter slaves to their Ego's (a sort of reverse egoism as it were but egoism nonetheless). Their egoism (moral arrogance) blinds them to what they are doing. Those folks on that roof are pretty old so they may not live long enough to appreciate that because of their moral arrogance, they actually played a direct role in facilitating the (possible) second holocaust of the Jews.

(And is what they are doing dhimmitude? Or is it arrogance - moral arrogance?)

Isn't Dougherty an Irish name? I've read the Irish are generally pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli. The same might apply to Americans of Irish ancestry.

I would recommend having those two tried for treason, however that apparently has ceased to be a serious crime in the West.

Two remnants of "liberation theology". Now that communism is pretty much gone these frauds are trying to liberate those poor victims of fiendish Zionism. They were stupid 25 years ago and are twice as stupid today. I guess God does work in mysterious ways.

You would think since they are in the Holy Land they would go to those cherished Holy Sites of our Christian faith and pray for an overall peace....

What about the Palestianian Christians? The real forgotten victims....

The very fact that they were in normal clothing speaks volumes in and of itself.

Reading this reminds me of something...Someone should tell the priest and the nun this before they bothered:

FLUSH TO JUDGMENT
Palestinians used Bible
as toilet paper
Muslims' desecration of holy book received little notice

While Muslims have responded with deadly outrage to the now-retracted report by Newsweek of alleged Quran desecration by U.S. interrogators, there was little outcry three years ago when Islamic terrorists holed up in Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity reportedly used the Bible as toilet paper.

Catholic priests in the church marking the spot where Jesus was believed to have been born said that during the five-week siege, Palestinians tore up some Bibles for toilet paper and removed many valuable sacramental objects, according to a May 15, 2002, report by the Washington Times.

Newsweek is under fire for a report in its May 9 edition that sparked protests and rioting across the Muslim world resulting in 17 dead, scores injured, relief buildings burned down and a setback to years of coalition-building against terrorists.

Newsweek's Periscope column written by Michael Isikoff and John Barry included a brief item alleging U.S. military investigators at the Guantanamo Bay prison found evidence that interrogators placed copies of the Quran down the toilet in an effort to get prisoners to talk.

Despite Newsweek's retraction, the outrage in the Muslim world continues.

In Saudi Arabia yesterday, the country's top religious authority, Grand Mufti Adul-Aziz al-Sheik, condemned the alleged desecration and called for an investigation "to alleviate the sorrow that befell Muslims."

"We condemn and denounce this criminal act against Muslims' most sacred item," al-Sheik said.

Afghanistan's government said Newsweek should be held responsible for damages caused by the demonstrations, and Pakistan said the magazine's apology and retraction were "not enough."

In contrast, during the 2002 church siege, the muted complaints of Christians under the Muslim-dominated Palestinian Authority gained little traction.

The Palestinian gunmen, members of Yasser Arafat's Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, seized church stockpiles of food and "ate like greedy monsters" until the food ran out, while more than 150 civilians went hungry, the Washington Times report said.

The indulgence lasted about two weeks into the 39-day siege, when the food and drink ran out, according to an account by four Greek Orthodox priests trapped inside. A church helper told the Times the quantity of food consumed by the gunmen in the first 15 days should have lasted six months.

Angry Orthodox priests showed reporters empty bottles of whiskey, champagne, vodka, cognac and French wine on the floor along with hundreds of cigarette butts.

"They should be ashamed of themselves. They acted like animals, like greedy monsters. Come, I will show you more," said one priest, who declined to give his name.

Computers were taken apart and a television set dismantled for use as a hiding place for weapons.

"You can see what repayment we got for 'hosting' these so-called guests," said Archbishop Ironius, according to the Times report.

"We are here in solidarity, and to try communicate to the world what is really going on." That sentence pretty much sums up the earnest naïveté that informs the likes of this sort.

I am also Catholic and roll my eyes when I read about all these ageing hippy peacenik-priests and sisters... It is lamentable that most of us born in the 1960s or later were taught by these types. Nostalgic for singing Kumbaya at anti-Vietnam marches, perhaps...

To which I say, Long live Benedict! He is a faithful and thoughtful teacher of Catholic Christianity and he certainly knows what's going on in Europe vis-à-vis both the jihadist and the secular relativist threats, just as John Paul II knew all too well the truth about Marxism (on the Marxist score, recall how JP II and then Cardinal Ratzinger shut down the Liberation theologians, and rightfully saw to it that they were thrown out of theology faculties in Catholic universities, etc.)

*

If I may be forgiven for being uncharitable. I know it's not nice to make fun of people's names, but what the hell: "Peace Activist": Sister GUNDECK? Good name for a pacifist. OK. I'm done. sorry won't do that again.

After seeing the photos of these two on the associated press I was apalled that they are sitting there holding two toddlers.

It is one thing to be a stupid adult and consent your physical presence in danger, but to sit there with babies that cannot consent for their own safety is child abuse.

America has laws agaisnt child abuse and an American on foreign soil can be prosecuted under American law for child abuse conducted over seas. These two are to be brougt up on charges upon their return into the U.S. I am calling my State Senator and will be contacting the FBI. I suggest everyone do the same.

I vote that the nutty duo of Father Peter Dougherty and Sister Mary Ellen Gundeck act as human shields when Palestinian Muslims desecrate Christian holy sanctuaries in the Middle East. Remember all the violence that occurred towards Christian churches following Pope Benedict XVI's remarks about Islam.

Posted by: ISLAMSFORLOSERS [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 23, 2006 2:48 AM

As far as I'm concerned, human shields are combatants, albeit unarmed. A shield is a weapon, so these human shields --who in this case are voluntary, even eager to serve as shields for terrorists-- are themselves weapons of the terrorists. The laws of war [Geneva Convention IV, article 28] provide that the presence of non-combatants cannot be lawfully used to stop an attack on military targets in proximity to these non-combatants. I say that this applies all the more so when people are voluntary, eager human shields.

Anyone can claim they are a priest or nun, many do around Halloween. It is interesting that those so called religious people are not feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, giving fresh water to the thirsty, etc. Instead, they are caught in a political trap of their own doing.

I have no sympathy for them whatsoever if they get blown up.

Posted by: callmeinfidel [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 23, 2006 9:34 AM

These two sound like Rachel-Corries-in-the-making. And I'll feel just as sorry for their deaths; NOT.

I agree wholeheartedly with the posters who describe the Catholic "peace activists" who run around the world promoting "people's revolutions", instead of focusing on helping those in need. I've watched that phenomenom my whole life; bah! Blind to history, they are. If religion is allowed to even exist, once repressive regimes are in place, it is only as handmaidens to those regimes. Ooops!....mabye they know that?

And hey, non-redneck:

'Isn't Dougherty an Irish name? I've read the Irish are generally pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli. The same might apply to Americans of Irish ancestry.'

Please don't tar us with that brush. We've been built with AMERICAN values & character, thanks!

These two "Catholics" make me sick. Yeah, yeah, yeah! A nun without a veil and a priest without a collar brimming with indignation over the followers of a "faith" that has killed countless numbers of their co-religionists

I'm wondering what, if anything, these two nitwits have done to aid the region's dwindling Christian communities, Christianity being, one would think, their religion.

Two Catholics a go-go!

Both should be wapped over the head with a very heavy leather-bound tome of the collected works of Palestrina.

Acoustic guitars and sheet music, with their featherweight fragility, just won't cut it here.

If they wanted to do something useful, they could help protect some of the many Christians in mortal danger from radical Muslims around the world.

There is no special virtue to be attributed, without more, to a clerical collar. These two are moral idiots. Though we are supposed to think there is something special about them, something morally superior, that is a false idea, without foundation. Their acts bespeak an unacceptable understanding of things, a confusing of those who, like the Israelis, are under permanent siege, and those who, like the local Arabs ("Palestinians") are the shock troops of the Arab and Muslim Jihad -- the Lesser Jihad -- against Israel.

A Nun's Priest Tale, indeed.
