LAHORE, Pakistan: Police detained three hard-line lawmakers Thursday in an attempt to block a protest in eastern Pakistan against recent changes to the country's Islamic rape laws, witnesses and officials said.A six-party coalition of Islamic groups, the Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) or United Action Forum, had been planning the rally for Thursday to protest new legislation they say violates Islamic law. Activists and the government of President Gen. Pervez Musharraf support the bill as protecting rape victims.
The protest, announced Wednesday by MMA president Qazi Hussain Ahmed, called for a march from the eastern city of Lahore to the nearby town of Gujrat. But late Wednesday night, the provincial government issued a statement banning rallies.
On Thursday, police detained three lawmakers from the coalition — Liaquat Baluch, Hafiz Hussain Ahmed and Farid Piracha — along with several supporters as they gathered for the rally, witnesses said.
Police also swung batons to disperse about 100 people who had also gathered at the rally point.
Local police official Amir Zulifquar said police were upholding the protest ban, but he refused to comment on the arrests.
Earlier, Munawar Hassan, a senior leader of the MMA, told reporters on Thursday that police had detained scores of supporters and erected barricades to block the planned march route.
Musharraf is expected to sign the bill on Dec. 4 at a special ceremony in Islamabad to make the legislation part of the constitution. But the MMA has vowed to step up its protests.

Wouldn't surprise me if Mushy Raff gets a fatwa of death after signing this law. How dare he take away the god given right to rape with impunity that Mr. Perfect favored. Who does he think he is?

with the amount of protest that Qazi Hussain Ahmed,is making against the new rape laws I have to wonder if he hiding behind Islam because he's a rapist that would be convicted under the laws as Shakespeare said methinks the man doth protest too much. Considering the number women who have been jailed for sex outside marriage in Pakistan after in fact they they were raped. The idea in Islam you have to have four Muslim male witnessesfor a womento prove rape . Now the West I would think that if more men saw woman being raped they would beat the crap out of the rapist. I.e. when the police arrived he would have fallen down several times and be a bloody mess, so I have not heard an explanation yet what the hell for Muslim witness are doing while the woman is being raped, are they joining in or what???I am aware that Muhammad Islam's so-called perfect man human raped women was in sight of their dead husbands, and Muslims have been doing the same thing for 1400 years following Muhammad's example. It's long past time that Muslims let his example of pre history behind\and joined the 21st century rape is a crime of violence and a woman is never responsible for her rape, and anyone that thinks otherwise is mentally ill. I personally do agree women have the right to control their bodies, with the sole exception that if they are pregnant the child and the right to life unless the pregnancy would put the mother's life in danger, and I mean actual danger not this I'm going to die I if I can't fit in the dress and the dance, and this has apparently been used in excuse for abortion.
