ONLY 10 days after Pakistan's military-led Government reformed the country's medieval rape and adultery laws, Islamabad appeared poised for a major backflip on the issue yesterday in an effort to pacify Islamic fundamentalists who have signed a fatwa against the historic changes.Hardline Pakistani religious leaders have labelled the reforms "un-Islamic, immoral and unconstitutional" and evidence of "Western values infiltrating society".
In response, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has authorised the Pakistan Muslim League to negotiate with religious scholars and leaders of the powerful Islamic opposition alliance, the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), over changes to the rape bill....
Negotiations over the bill follow two days of fury in mosques across the country, with Muslim priests leading attacks on the changes, denouncing them for their "Western values" and attacking those who supported the reforms.
Under the changes, complaints of rape and adultery will be dealt with under the country's civil penal code rather than under an obscure Islamic sharia ruling imposed in 1979 that demands that four male witnesses testify before a rape charge can be proved.
Reports said yesterday that as part of the attempt to curb the gathering campaign against the rape law changes, police and paramilitary forces had ringed the headquarters of the fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami party in the Punjab capital of Lahore, where thousands of protesters led by the MMA were gathering to demonstrate against the changes to the legislation.
A leader of the group said: "The MMA remains absolutely committed to stop these changes, and if necessary to bring about a change in the Government."

It seems to me that the muslim hardliners are hard up to rape little girls and boys and get away with it. Forget forensic evidence and a modern court of law. We want four male witnesses as if that ever is likely to occur unless a gang rape punishment group has some of its members turn against the others. This should be front page news on every major news paper in the west and on every TV channel, too. It's time that the people see what Islam really is all about.

I am curious about the fact that if a woman charges rape and the charge is regarded as unsubstantiated for lack of four male witnesses to penetration, only the woman is charged with fornication or adultery. Insofar as the woman is considered to have confessed to unlawful sex, why is her "confession" not also evidence that the man also engaged in unlawful sex? If the answer is that the testimony of a woman is insufficient to support a conviction, why is a woman's uncorroborated confession sufficient to support a conviction? I understand that there is a general bias against women in Shariah Law, but there is also a tradition of rational jurisprudence within the assumptions of Islam. How do legal scholars rationalize this?

So -- adultery now in Pakistan will be dealt with under the civil penal code -- not under the Islamic sharia law? A truly progressive move would have been to remove adultery from the penal code altogether. But that's too much to ask from a punitive patriarchial society in which allegations of rape (an almost impossible crime to prove due to the necessity of the victim providing four male Muslim witnesses) all too often morph into charges of adultery against the victim. What better way to reserve female sexuality as the prerogative of the male than by claiming the right to define and interpret her sexual experiences for her?
The "two days of fury in mosques" across Pakistan is a sign that the male Muslim there is feeling his supremacy threatened. It's not hard to see where the locus of power is in that country. Why is the government not negotiating with the oppressed women there instead of with the MMA? We know why not.

I surely cannot understand your bitterness towards the ummah and me in particular. It is like I represent Islam for you...but I am only one muslima person.
My suspicions however are that you had a muslim boyfriend/husband...and don't anymore.
You mannerisms/language so put them off that they scooted...probably along with your little italian scooter...LOL it turns out that your blonde hair wasn't sufficient to keep them after all...after all, even western womens like you need some personality to attract muslims.... am I right...or am I right.
Anyway to the subject matter...it is my belief that no woman deserves to be raped...under any circumstances ...ever.
Muhd SAW brought in that law to protect the womens...but it's been turned on it's head to oppress them instead. The Islamists in this regard are not following muslim law...they are being manipulated ...therefore common human decency law has been brought in to bear.
This is right, proper and just.
It made me smirk and laugh, looking at those lunds protesting today in Lahore...however please do not forget to advertise the Ahmadi cause in teh Amekerie...after all outr founder announced that he had a touch of Jesus (PBUH) about him.

What can one say when you have people, Muslims, who cannot see that not all that is in the koran is sanctified and right. Rape is a violation of the person, and I'm surprised that so many Muslims do not see that Islamic edicts on this subject are wrong.

Reformation in Islam? Should I say peaceful reformation of Islam? Should I dare say violent eradication of Islam? If the unterfuhrers in Pakistan will not tolerate rape law changes, how can we expect the Islamic leaders across this entire planet to accept other, more profound changes.
Reformation will occur in the cult of submission after a world conflagration that will make World War Two look like a bloodless gang fight from "Westside Story."

Islamic Doctrine--Peaceful,Fair ??? I don't think so...The rape law is one of many doctrines in the Koran that make this religion a medival farce !!!
It boggles my mind to think that educated people can follow this ridiculous doctrine..Can you imagine making the female produce 4 male witnesses before her accusations can be considered credible.No wonder the ladies wear Burkahs, probably to cover their black & blue bruises they receive from their abusive husbands, biyfrieds, etc.
