Identity -- and pro-jihad work -- of veiled woman in UK "alternative" Christmas message revealed

This is the woman who was presented as an authentic example of a "moderate" British Muslim. What was Channel 4 trying to tell us again? "Unmasked: the veiled white Muslim convert whose great grandmother was a suffragette," by Neil Sears for the Daily Mail:

She was presented by Channel 4 as an authentic - but anonymous - voice of moderate British Islam.
And on Christmas Day the veiled woman described only as "Khadijah" was given a national televison platform for propagating her views in an "alternative Christmas message" designed to rival the Queen's.
She told viewers Jack Straw was wrong to criticise the veil, claiming concealing facial features "liberated" women.

Nonstandard capitalization from the next paragraph onward is original to the article.

But the Daily Mail can now unveil "Khadijah" - and reveal that she is in fact Elaine Atkinson, an English convert to Islam who travels the country working for a radical muslim group trying to take political control of Pakistan.
And despite her presentation by Channel 4 as a moderate, in the past the 38-year-old has described non-believers as "rats in cages going round on a treadmill" of consumerism, and declares she would like to see Britain's pubs converted into mosques.
Since going through an islamic marriage ceremony with a British-born muslim of Pakistani origin, Miss Atkinson - a fromer radical feminist - has become known as Khadijah Iqbal.
But her rejection of her English roots caused a rift with her family, which has a long history of military and police service.
Her great-grandmother was a suffragette, and her brother is currently serving as a soldier in Afghanistan, she claimed.
Atkinson, a mother of one, was approached by Channel 4 to give the controversial alternative Christmas message after the original veiled woman chosen, Khadija Ravat, a 33-year-old islamic teacher, withdrew because of negative publicity.
Channel 4 said it would be veiling her true identity, along with her face, to enable viewers to focus on her words instead of her personality.
But the story of her rejection of her traditional English background, and her determination to embrace radical Islam, is a fascinating one.
[...]
Atkinson led a normal English childhood, and after being schooled locally without any contact with muslims, left the countryside for London and became a social worker.
But in 1996 she suddenly became interested in the koran, and started attending the Regent's Park Mosque in the centre of the capital.
Atkinson said: "Much to the shock and horror of my family and friends I embraced Islam.
"My friends, family and colleagues were very keen to express their negative views.
"I had always been known as a radical Feminist and had dutifully continued the family tradition of following in the footsteps of my great-grandmother, who was a suffragette.
"Much to my greatgrandmother ’s horror (if she were still here to express it) I was soon to discover that Feminism and Islam went together like oil and water.
"I realised Feminism promoted the very thing it protested against: oppression of women."
Atkinson went on, in an essay published on the Internet for fellow muslims: "When I see large numbers of non-believers I feel very sad for them as they remind me of rats or gerbils in cages going round and round on a treadmill, believing that they are fulfilling their sole purpose in life and reaching their true destiny (which is Argos).
"If only they could uncover their eyes and see the damage they cause themselves and to their children.
"I feel certain that if they were to have a tiny glimpse of what Islam could give them there would be Mosques on every corner instead of pubs."
Atkinson now lives with her husband Dr Zahid Iqbal, 38, who qualified as a doctor at Southampton in 1992, in a £350,000 three-bed house in Barking, east London. She abandoned her English name four years [ago].
She works for the radical Minhaj ul Qur'an group from its UK base at a mosque in nearby Forest Gate - running a "sisters' group" for other female muslims, travelling the country making converts, and broadcasting on Asian local radio stations.
Minhaj ul Qur'an was established in Pakistan, but operates in 92 countries, and aims to convert the whole world in Islam.
In Pakistan the religious group has a political wing - the Pakistan People Movement - which boasts it is "actively working to establish an Islamic state in Pakistan" to ensure "muslims have an international voice and political power to relieve the ongoing oppression and subjugation of muslims around the world".
Atkinson - pictured in a rare unveiled moment when returning home from a shopping trip - last night refused to elaborate on her views.
Contrary to her claims of being moderate, at an Islamic conference in Sheffield this year Atkinson told fellow muslims it was morally wrong to listen to any sort of music, or to watch soap operas. She urged the conference to stop watching any television at all.
In a statement issued through Channel 4, Atkinson said last night: "Minhaj-ul-Quran is a spiritual movement which promotes peace and tolerance of other faiths. It is against all forms of extremism and radicalism whether religious or otherwise."
Atkinson's brother Howard Atkinson, 46, is a soldier. He was last night unvailable for comment - as were their parents, who have moved to Spain.
Atkinson last night insisted that she did enjoy listening to islamic music.

Infidels on their hamster-wheel, thinking they are on a steady march in search toward attaining the unattainable Golden Fleece (Greek Myths for Boys and Girls, as retold by Howard Pyle, with illustrations by Nicholas Wyeth)? Or is this a different Argos?

" I was soon to discover that Feminism and Islam went together like oil and water.

One more Spiritual Searcher. Some don't go quite so far but just become Apologists for Islam. See Karen Armstrong. Others fall for it, and when they discover The Awful Truth make up their own Private Islam, and stick to that, pretending that they are "working within the system" to promote what is best, and to do away with, or rather to "reform" Islam (fat chance). Still others may simply find it is a way to make them more important in the world's eyes (starting with Muslims who may have made much of them as new converts), and even more importantly, given them the status they think they deserve (google "Posted by Hugh" and "Weiss-Schwartz Syndrome").

No doubt the wage-slave's treadmill is disturbing. No doubt the sickening amounts, the hundreds of millions or billions given by some corporation to some departing executive, as part of his "package," infuriate, no doubt the Western world is full of all kinds of idiocy and everyone can mock or deplore the Consumer Society or, even bigger, the entire civilta di consumo, but why turn to Islam?

A similar question was asked long ago. That the excesses or injustices of capitalism, Dickensian capitalism, existed and exist are undeniable. But why become a Communist, and a loyal supporter of Joseph Stalin?

Even, or perhaps especially those who are aware of all the problems of the Western world, have a duty at this point not to fall for, or let others fall for, the idea that Islam represents anything at all except a Totalitarian System, one that uncompromisingly teaches adherents to divide the world between Believer and Infidel, limits and impoverishes the means for artistic expression, discourages free and skeptical inquiry, locates political legitimacy in the will of Allah and not in the expressed will of the people, sets up as a Perfect Man a cunning and ruthless warrior who was perfectly happy to attack those who had done nothing to him and were merely inoffensive farmers (the Khaybar Oasis), looked on approvingly at the massacre of hundreds of bound prisoners (the Banu Qurayza), was pleased to learn that those who had mocked him were murdeed (Abu Akaf, Asma bint Marwan), and preached that "war is deception" and much else that inspires Muslims, and disturbs Infidels, to this day.

Spare us this kind of Spiritual Searcher. The psychically marginal -- John Walker Lindh and Adam Gadahn come swimmingly to mind -- who are thrown up in the Western world, and who, instead of merely descending into, as they might have, some other available off-the-shelf form of An Answer to Everything, choose dangerous-to-themselves-and-to-others Islam.

I knew I had read the 'rats and gerbils' article some time back, but could'nt remember where or under what name.

So, anyway, here it is:

She told viewers Jack Straw was wrong to criticise the veil, claiming concealing facial features "liberated" women.

Just as the "veil" has liberated robbers of Jewelery shops in India hiding their identities.

City jewellers reject veiled clients
PUNE: The burqa is back in the news. This time it's not religious zealots or political firestarters but jewellers who want to lift the veil.
After surveillance cameras failed to identify burqa-clad persons who robbed leading jewellery stores in the city, jewellers have decided to put restrictions on customers who come in wearing the attire.
The Pune Saraf Association has written to the state home minister to allow jewellers to put up a board outside their shops informing them of the ‘no burqa' policy.

Seems that Straw was not so wrong in objecting to interviewing unidentified people.

"Argos" in this respect is a rather quirky retailer of which I've never been able to fathom it's point. It's basically a catalogue shop where you browse catalogue and then go to the counter to pick up the goods.

This is actually entirely correct, though I don't know how she interprets it. It's not suprising at all that a radical feminist would convert to Islam. After all, they have a common enemy: white Christian men.

Orwell’s quote had been posted before but this is uncanny:

What immense relief I felt, no more fighting for a lost cause, Peace and Submission to Allah (swa). Inner peace at knowing that a complete way of life had been prescribed for humankind, from how one should express joy to how one should handle their economics. –from PRCS’ post above

He gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark mustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother. – From 1984

The convert, in trying to prove himself/herself, is always more rabidly fanatical than the born Mohammedan.

This is observed on an industrial scale in the nation of Pakistan - the epicentre of Islamofascism - originating in the converted Hindus' need to separate themselves from their Hindu identity and identify with the cult they were converted into.

Also noteworthy is how completely and fanatically they deny the fact that their ancestors were converted to the cult by rape, murder, torture, looting, forced circumcision and death threats - they had to choose the Koran or the Sword.

It is amusing how they portray themselves as the 'descendants of Muslim warriors who killed the Hindu rats' - the Hindus of today, in fact are largely those who SURVIVED the terror and tyranny - and those who fought it to the end - the Marathas, the Sikhs, the Rajputs - while the Muslims of today are those who lost the battle - those who were subjugated and converted.

I have yet to hear just one Female muslim
say anything about being happy and at peace with god , every one of them barely smiles or speaks about the joy and beauty mixed in among the evil and ugly of man kind .
The Ch 4 tripe by a person that doesn't believe in "The Christ" was a overt ruse to provoke a response and rub Islam in the faces of all Christians that Jesus is just a Prophet in the Quran and Muhammed is the one to exhalt, does anyone really think that a Christian would be allowed to give a Ramadan message in a Islamic republic.

Maybe it's best that these depressed losers
cover their faces and stay at home to crank out the little Ahmeds , the years of inbreeding has made the women look pretty close to a mans face and hands , so maybe the veil isn't a bad thing
after all .

I really have no confidence left in this country

I'm not that surprised by radical feminists turning Muslim. Most feminazis respect nothing that won't beat them up, and seem fed up with the whimpy men who humour them. They're just out to destroy Western civilization, so like the Communist Roger Garaudy, they're ripe for Islam.

Let them go to their place (hint: it's what the Gospel says of Judas Iscariot).

Gudrun Schuyman
Aminah Assilmi http://www.welcome-back.org/profile/aminah1.shtml

Here's an article from Brussels Journal debating the issue:

There's even a book on this subject:
http://www.utexas.edu/utpress/excerpts/exvanwom.html

Most of the links are available through a google search. Just type in radical feminist converts to islam.

I think whether they be radical feminists or radical leftists, Islam is the one major option that provides a channel for their radical, that is, blowing up, killing, maiming instincts.

Her brother is with the British forces in Afghanistan. He should invite her to Afghanistan. He should let her see a real Muslim country. Let her walk around, visit schools for girls, talk to women who remember life under the pure Islam of the Taliban, or who can show her examples of the Taliban's handiwork today. She needs to get out more. She needs to see a Muslim society. She, and all the other female converts to Islam who live in their crazed world.

Fit for the Laughing Academy. But perhaps Reality Therapy can work. Her family should give it a whirl. Then abandon her forever. And make sure she's cut off without a cent.

Hugh,

Even, or perhaps especially those who are aware of all the problems of the Western world, have a duty at this point not to fall for, or let others fall for, the idea that Islam represents anything at all except a Totalitarian System

I think you've hit upon a great point here and I agree that it's an intellectual duty to explain to people just why the Western tradition is superior to Islam on every level.

There is still the open question, though, of whether or not those who are nominally "Western" really adhere to the same standards today as the Western man of previous times.

I don't know if you are familiar with the writings of Wyndham Lewis, but he theorized that the vast masses of "Western" men and women wanted nothing more than some sort of fascist government to regulate everything, just as we see in Islam. His book "The Art of Being Ruled" is an examination of this hypothesis. I know you're very well-read, so you may have come across it already, but if not, it's definitely one of the hidden gems of 20th century non-fiction.

You could even argue that Lewis' hypothesis, in explaining the psychic differences between men and women, about women equating freedom with "lack of responsibility" explains why some of these Western women are going in for Islam so frequently these days. Now that the West is asking them to take on more responsibility for their own lives, Islam becomes an attractive option because women certainly don't have to take on any responsibility within its strictures. Just pump out kids non-stop and you've done your job as a woman.

Elaine Atkinson's former embrace of feminism, coupled with her statement -- "I realised Feminism promoted the very thing it protested against: oppression of women" -- expresses vividly the ultimately circular paradox of Left/Right (in terms of their polar extremes asymptotically converging as points on a circle):

1) it was her Leftism that moved her pathologically to hate her own West;

2) it was her Leftism (in the form of PC Multiculturalism) that predisposed her mind to be uncritically receptive and attracted to exotic oriental alternatives to the West, particularly one whose ideological otherness from, and opposition to, the West is as coherent as is Islam's;

3) and then, once she was well on her way away from her West and into the depths of the embrace of Islam, she did not recoil from the obviously reactionary and anti-Leftist ambiance and structures of her new Islamic cosmion -- rather, she embraced Islam back with fervor.

(There might have been facilitating ideological factors at work also, smoothing the transition of her acrobatic Left/Right flip-flop: for example, the anti-Capitalistic disdain evident in her "gerbils on a treadmill" comment was likely to have been her sentiment about the West long before she embraced Islam, and, once she began to slide into Islam, she found its "alternative economics" to be more socially "just" in a perfectly Leftist sense -- therefore softening her up to accept other more authoritarian and reactionary tenets, such as the ban on music, etc.)

Another example of this kind of Left/Right flip-flop is the Leftist lawyer Lynn Stewart (convicted for enabling her client, the terrorist Sheik, Omar Abdul Rahman, while in prison by helping him to communicate with his terrorist organization in Egypt), whose Leftist anti-Westernism leads her to decry the supposedly fascist authoritarianism of Western governments in the alleged ways they incarcerate and liquidate opposition -- which then leads smoothly to her support for, and justification of, the very same type of tactics when perpetrated by Communist and Islamist movements, of incarcerating and liquidating their opponents.

As David Horowitz wrote:

Lynne Stewart is on record approving “directed violence,” which – as she explained to the New York Times -- “would be violence directed at the institutions which perpetuate capitalism, racism and sexism.” The World Trade Center for instance. Lynne Stewart has endorsed the Muslim jihadists in particular: “They are basically forces of national liberation,” she told the Marxist magazine Monthly Review. “My own sense is that, were the Islamists to be empowered, there would be movements within their own countries …. to liberate.”

At the National Lawyers Guild annual convention last year she attacked her own country as having “a poisonous government that spreads its venom to the body politic in all corners of the globe,” and raised a glass to her heroes: “Ho and Mao and Lenin, Fidel …” and of course Che Guevara whom she quoted: “At the risk of seeming ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love.”

Very interesting, I didn't know that, but it is something we see going on today in the example of this weak-minded hag. On the other hand, those who convert from Islam are typically brave and intelligent (Wafa Sultan being a perfect example).

It makes one think of Islam as a sort of membrane - one that encourages the weak-willed and stupid to come in, and that encourages the strong and smart to leave. Somehow I don't think its long term prospects are good.

Oh, and further to chinubhai11's comment above, you can see the same process illustrated in the excellent (but somewhat harrowing) New Zealand film Once Were Warriors.

(Plot spoiler) The Kiwis have a problem with violent gangs of indigenous people - but these are not gangs of the original "owners" of NZ (we call the Maori, who have typically integrated and succeeded in the western culture of NZ), but of the slaves of the Maori - ie those pulled from neighbouring islands.

In both cases, it's a violent and aggressive attitude masking a deep insecurity over their past submission.

I don't think Channel 4 TV have any problem when it comes to recruiting Muslims to appear in programmes. Although I am currently in the US I have a home in England and usually watch Channel 4 News. I also record all British TV programmes available to me about Muslims and related matters. C4 News anchor man Jon Snow recently presented a series on Muslims in Britain. He never asked any really searching questions and carefully avoided asking about the attitudes of the people he interviewed towards Jews, mixed marriages involving non-Muslim men, etc., while allowing interviewees to demand non-Muslims be tolerant and demanding 'equal' rights.
However, just in making this series and in C4's almost nightly interview/s on the news with self-appointed Muslim 'representatives', Channel 4 will inevitably have built up a large Muslim contact network it can draw on. I suspect that Elaine Atkinson was very easy to find via their contacts. They also employ a female Muslim newsreader - Samira Ahmed and a Business correspondent called Faisel Islam - however - in neither case do they flaunt their Muslim identity.

Personally, I'm a great believer in Pavlov's concept of the ultra-paradoxical phase of transmarginal excitation. He observed in dogs that, subjected to prolonged stress over a long enough period, their personalities and behaviour would do a flip into the exact opposite of what they had been before. It's a rather disturbing thought.

Muslim organizations in the West are generally keen to show off their white converts. They tend to fuss over them which probably helps them to become even more zealous. Maybe it's a sort of sort of Muslim "love bombing" exercise. We're supposed to be impressed, even if it happens to someone as obviously insane as Yvonne Ridley.

I wonder if it was any accident the the press soon found out the original name and background of this niqab wearer.

Samira Ahmed was born in London; her father fled Afghanistan; she went to Oxford and did visit Afghanistan with a film crew to see her "alternative future" but for Britain.

Channel 4 tries to be a Performance Art "Shock Jock" station but falls flat on its face. Gordon Brown wants to sell it so its days may be numbered - like all things it started out well and went into abject decline as did The Independent newspaper.

The thing with The Left is that it is an incoherent outlook - it is like a child crying - and responds emotionally to each affront. Funnily enough before WWII it was The Right that was emotional with its "Blood", "Soil", and appeal to "gut instinct" and hyped up slogans.

Now it is The Left which has become hysterical. Probably they have lost the certainty that came with Soviet money and agitators and feel the world is too complex for their cries, or that cheap Chinese goods have made their proletariat less malleable than adopting fringe causes.

It gives these people a thrill to treat Pet Muslims like Pet Dogs in need of careful nurturing in the pet sanctuary.

I am surprised that Khadijah Iqbal has not insisted that her husband leave the decadent consumerist west and return back to Pakistan with the whole family so their children may have a proper muslim upbringing - Dr Iqbal, as a healthcare professional, would be very welcome in a country which depended on Cubans to perform over one million medical interventions after the earthquake 2 years ago!

She is a True Believer.

Please read, True Believers by Eric Hoffer.

People who join Islam as well as other mass movements are frustrated individuals, who are engaged in a "flight from the self".

"went into abject decline as did The Independent newspaper.'

And I thought that was a paper reporting news accurately, "independently." Wow!

"suprising at all that a radical feminist would convert to Islam. After all, they have a common enemy: white Christian men.'

Well, I'm a feminist. Took us long enough for white men - to give us the vote in the early 1920s. But I must congratulate Congress on NOT being racist, since they gave Blacks the vote first in the 1870s (?).

We still have the struggle because men would be very happey to see us home, in the " kitchen, bare-foot & pregnant." As it its, we, women, still have to come home from the 9-5's - and take care of the housework, the kiddles & and cooking (Rachel Raye ain't making a mint out of her program "30-Minute Cooking" for nothing.)
It's NOT the men - cleaning up after "Thanksgiving Dinner"-
it's NOT the women sitting in soafas watching football-while guzzling beer.

In WWII, with the men out, we became Rosie The Riveter (there's a song) - it was either blue-collar - or the typing pools, or a teacher in the style of "Little House on the Prairie" in a little town somewhere.

When the men came back fr the war, we, women were sent back home ("I Love Lucy" - "Leave It to Beaver" - yuck - yuck).

The Blacks got their full rights in the 1960s.

It took the radical feminists to from the 1960s on - fight to allow women to break into the business world - equal pay for equal work- for Women's Rights -unfortunately, we hit the Glass Ceiling in the 1980's.

Nothing, personal, guy, but it's the truth, it was white men that held us back. Who holds the power today worldwide:

the male gender
with a pink skin

I call that white.

We were/are part of the "White Man's Burden."

ANd now, we're suspended in "Limbo" - we're good enough for the "grunts" in the military - & have a few "tokens" in the Pentagon & Congress, and on tv, w/ Martha Steward, and look what happened to her - and even then, we're in the service industries, such as cooks - like cook shows.

As to the catholic church,- Hell! - even the protestants have female ministers - the catholics don't even allow female priests - but women sure take care of the housekeeping in the parishes.

And this is an example of how we,in the West, have to organize, and go to meetings, and go on Protest Marches against islam. Women took it on the chin, the Sufragettes and the Feminists of the 80s - were beaten, fined & imprisioned and abused.

No progress is made without outward struggle. So with history in mind, gird your loins for the coming struggle.

And know that at this moment, that is EXACTLY what the islamics slime are doing.

So, we must be prepared to PUSH BACK - HARD!

In Britain, there is competetion going on amongst the news channel as to which one can broadcast more islamo-centric propoganda.

Both BBC and ITN (makers of Channel 4 News) are totally dhimmified. John Snow (who fronts the news on Channel 4) never misses an opportunity to criticise Israel. Their coverage of the recent war with Hizbollah was nothing more than a vomit inducing propoganda for Hizbollah.

I wouldn't trust either the BBC or Channel 4 in their news output.

As far as this bint Elaine Atkinson is concerened, do not forget that she is someone who has been fed nothing but mellowed version of islam from her school days (where learning islam is compulsory here in Britain) to her exposure in the media at large (all of whom are either too afraid to say the truth about islam or are arab owned/bribed).

So it is not entirely her fault that she is not islamo-aware and falls into the trap of believing what she reads or what is said to her. Britain is full of women like her, even Diana (Princess of Wales) was not averse to a bit of muslim men.

Allat, very inspiring. Glad you're here.

Feminism and Islam went together like oil and water. Oil and water really don't go well together. I wonder if that was slip.

Atkinson last night insisted that she did enjoy listening to islamic music.

Islamic Music???

What would exactly this be?

Hey allat, Ya know why a man should never have his wifes watch fixed if it breaks?
BECAUSE THERE IS A CLOCK ON THE STOVE.!!!

Greatly enjoyed that sober, rational post, Hugh, regarding the Spiritual Searcher. Pithy words, these; '...when they discover The Awful Truth make up their own Private Islam...' I witness that behavior even amongst born-into-the-fold-Muslims, when they are writing in defense of their "religion".

Atkinson's grandmother must be spinning in her grave. FOR THIS she fought? Arrrrrrgh....! Makes me wonder, with trepidation, if I'll witness my own female descendents mewling, "better Islamic than dead".

LOL, el greco, from this feminist. Lighten up, allat. Sounds like you don't cross paths with the right men.

I really love white Christian men.
What is wrong with these people who hate them?
