Yet another honor killing. Of course, Sharia supremacists expressing opposition to education for women is nothing new. From Reuters, with thanks to Sr. Soph:
KARACHI - A Pakistani fruit vendor shot dead his sister because she had a job and was studying for a university degree, a police official in conservative North West Frontier Province said.Naheeda Bibi, 22, was shot three times by her brother on Sunday near her village outside Mansehra city, as she went to catch a bus to return to Rawalpindi where she studied and worked.
“The brother, Gul Shahzad, has no remorse and says she defied him and her father,” local police officer Mohammad Afzal told Reuters by telephone.
“He kept on screaming after he surrendered to the police that she met the destiny willed for her by God,” he said.

How sad for Naheeda to have a jerk like Gul for a bhai-jaan. Within Islam brothers are supposed to love and protect their sisters and sisters of the ummah in general. The opposite ....protecting sisters from themselves is a bit of a nonsense...and in this case...terminal.
I think that in general this is a similar problem to sura-skipping. Aspects of Sharia are good for humanity and ofcourse aspects are fateful.
This is why my call for the wuslim is so important. If at least in the West we could agree on and implement mild sharia integrated with democracy...what an important and ground breaking and out of the box step forward that would be. It would also show Kafur commitment.
This step would perhaps encourage Islamic states to follow this lead.
An example of this is that at the moment a muslima cannot travel more than 40 miles away her residence on her own without a meharam (male escort). With mild sharia taking account of modern communications and travel we could perhaps look to increase this 40 mile limit to a generous 400 miles...an order of magnitude increase in freedom.
Looked at llike this, womens will have their freedoms...and sharia is there in a milder form....it's a win win situation.

History has proven over and over again that democracy and Isam don't mix! PERIOD! Look at her own country where democracy has failed time and time again thanks to Islamist dictators. On the other hand look at neighboring India prospering in the brignt light of deomcracy, freedom and growing economy. Actually, in the US, if a muslima WANTED to conduct herself under Sharia law, she could. As long as no one IMPOSES it on other people, they can be as sharia as they please. I think the Muslim countries should try that.

Naseem Islam and 'democracy' can't be integrated. This is a mistake in western thinking that results from westerns assuming 'all things calling themselves religions are alike'.
Islam is more than a religion... it is a way of life with fixed boundaries. It is opposite of western, liberal republics with guaranteed protection of individual and minority rights.
This is what we mean by 'democracy' ... although we don't all fully articulate it. Vote-counting can be the same as mob-rule.
One cannot server two masters. The slaves of Islam cannot simultaneously believe in western style representitive goverance with protected freedoms. Those masters are mutually exclusive.
The sooner this is understood the better.

ALWAYS REMEMBER!! The best defense we in the West have against Islam are the words and actions of the Islamists themselves. I don't know if it's due to stupidity, or general blood-lust, but who really cares. With each jaw-dropping example by an Islamist in the name of "peace and tolerance", Islam is revealed.
Your bold predictions for 2007 have gone horribly astray already. You want ground-breaking? We are currently breaking ground in Somalia. Take solace in that.

The overriding theme here is not honor, but control.
Complete control is the ultimate goal in Islam and anything and everything is used as a means to an end. I believe Islam is the religion that Satan set up to force worship for himself as opposed to the God who made us, of whom Satan is extremely jealous. He uses all the fruits of evil to achieve his aim. Murder, lying, rape, stealing other peoples' properties and wives, bestiality, pedophilia. Every aberrated behavior is free to let loose on an unsuspecting public if it will further the goal of world domination and each and every knee being bent in subjection to the voracious appetite of Islam.
Allah is not all merciful, all compassionate. We need to pay close attention and call a lie a lie. I'm so sick of reading about how Islam honors women. It honors women as long as those women do exactly as the men in their wives want them to, but how can they? We all suffer from bad choices, irritable behavior or just plain moodiness due to our inherent human nature. Why should women be expected to curb their human nature any more than men? Why should women have to live under the threat of death if their moody or irritable father, brother or husband wakes up one day on the wrong side of the bed?
Is this what we've been working towards over the past several thousand years in order to achieve a high civilization? We are going backwards and its up to every man and woman on this earth to choose life over death, choose self-restraint over passing laws that enable one sex to oppress another, or one type of person to kill, rape or maim someone because they don't do things the way we want them done. Time to re-instate the Golden Rule.

JW is a site that polarises peoples towards an extreme based on isolated incidents.
I ask you peoples to be careful not to b ecome so polarised. Crows& Cows is a dusgisting example of this...talking about "Aubergines/Brinjals would be periodically polished with dirtiestest rags doused in kerosene".
In 25 years in Lahore I have never come across this practice....People who sell fresh produce need to remain in business ...and selling aubergines like this will not keep their customers....peoples are not stupid.
I also know a lot of people who try very hard (working all hours) to get their sisters educated through school and university.
We also have a few female recruits who have joined the armed forces....it is not all doom and gloom....there needs a sense of perspective to remain.
I almost get a sense of glee from the peoples who put these stories up.... a sense of proportion needs to remain here.
