This accommodation of Muslims is ridiculous on so many levels that I shudder to think what could happen next.

The reorientation of the toilets could have been stopped at the 'get go' if someone had consulted the official, written manuals on Islamic sacred law. One of the most available documents in English is "The Reliance of the Traveller" written in the 14th Century by Ahmad ibn Naqib al-Misri. It is subtitled "a classic manual of Islamic Sacred Law" and is endorsed by a significant number of Muslim countries, as well as the North American Fiqh Council.

The manual contains a chapter (e9) on rules for going to the lavatory. Even though indoor plumbing was not contemplated in the 14th Century, the rules are clear: "It is unlawful to urinate or defecate with one's front or rear towards the direction of prayer when outdoors and there is no barrier to screen one, though it is permissible when outdoors or indoors within a meter and a half of a barrier at least 32 cm high, or in a hole that deep." Thus any time someone is standing within a meter and a half of a urinal or sitting on a toilet at least 32 cm off the ground he would be would be in compliance with Islamic law, regardless of the orientation of the toilet fixture.

By the way, according to section e9.5, the preferred way of cleaning oneself is to use stones. Perhaps the prisons could save money on toilet paper by providing the inmates a bucket of gravel instead.

No. This should be a given in Infidel lands: unnecessary because very expensive changes only in order not to offend Muslim sensibilities. Nothing of the sort has been done before with non-Muslim prisoners, about special foods or other accommodations. Let it be considered part of the punishment.

Are we to believe that Muslism not in prison do not, all the time, use public toilets, or toilets at work, or at home, unless and until they no longer face Mecca? Do we have a record of Muslims ripping out their toilets in the subsidizing housing projects all over Europe, and putting in ones that do not face Mecca?

If the prison system is willing to accommmoodate, then why would the government not be willing, everywhere that there is public housing, to accommodate Muslims by building brand new bathrooms, putting in brand-new plumbing (at the expense of the Infidel taxpayers who pay a Jizyah, a vast unrecognized transfer of wealth from Infidels to Muslims, all over the increasingly impoverished welfare states of Western Europe)?

Ordinarily these where-will-it-all-end arguments are silly, and usually invoked by those who think a camera on the road means the Gestapo will come a-calling that evening. But in this case the Where Will It All End query is perfectly reasonable.

If someone farts, Wudhu must be repeated. Wudhu is the ritual washing with water, water only. A Mohammedan cannot pray if wudhu is invalidated. Wudu can be spoiled by many, many, many things including a fart. The silent but deadly kind count also.

I think farting in a mosgue is also forbidden. As far as which way the farter is standing, I neither know nor care. Putting one's thumb on the forhead when a fart is detected and extending the fingers is considered haram. The hadiths do not record Mohammed ever doing this.

Rush mentioned this story yesterday, and then brought up a question - what do they do in a plane? Do they enter the cockpit with box-cutters threatening the pilot to hijack/destroy the plane unless the pilot turned the plane such that its toilet didn't face Mecca?

Also, East facing loos wouldn't face Mecca - for Britain, they'd have to face South-East. I recall a National Geographic issue where they discussed how would a Muslim in Dearbornistan determine which way is Mecca? The answer being to connect the great circle that runs through Dearborn through Mecca and its antipode (somewhere near New Zealand) - for Dearborn, that would mean North East.

So if one of the haj pilgrims is next to the ka'aba, and needs to relieve himself, what does he do? Hold it in, until he's back at Jeddah?

....Makes sense to me and it is much cheaper than rebuilding the cells... Also it makes the prisoner actually work at something...like picking up the bucket and dumping it into the perfectly workable toilet....

you don't western style toilets are very rare. in all likelihood you would find your self squatting over a hole in the floor. been there done that in a private home not very comfortable.at least there were two foot imprints on either side of the hole so one could position themselves properly

I worked in Saudi for a few months for an extremely large company. My first time there I was reminded that I need to use the western restroom. yes they had built an eastern-style and western-style restrooms in the office buildings. even the western-style toilets had hoses so you could properly cleanse yourself

I see so many possibilities here. What if you were not provided with these special toilets? It could be a true test of a person's faith to see just how long they could hold it in. Perhaps they would go on "potty strikes" in protest, the way IRA prisoners went on hunger strikes, hoping that before they lose their willpower they'll die of constipation, bloating, or a combination thereof and thus become instant martyrs, the way the IRA hunger strikers did.

BTW, I am sure at least some intelligent people are asking exactly why this is such a pressing concern in prisons now, i.e., why are there such a disproportionate number of Muslims in British prisons? Guess it's because of all the Islamophobia out there; it drives the poor innocents to crime.

A slightly off-topic human-interest comment. Having drank too many sodas in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (near Mecca) I visited the men’s room. It was dreary and consisted of two stalls with simple holes in the floor, and a stainless steel trough with water dripping from an elevated pipe and trickling down to a drain.

In the Midwest, urinals are oftentimes stainless steel troughs so I made an assumption, approached, unzipped, and began to take care of business. About ten seconds into the act, a turbaned man gave me probably the worst look I’ve seen in my life as he began to wash his hands next to me in the dripping water.

Knowing what Saudis do to people who steal bread, it was time to go. I made it out ‘intact’. For the record, that entire City smells like a toilet.
