Aisha Alert from modern, moderate Malaysia. "13-year-olds marry in mass ceremony," from Agence France-Presse, with thanks to JE:
TWO 13-year old Malaysians were the youngest among 10 couples who were married in a joint wedding ceremony in eastern Terengganu state, a report said today.Sukhri Ali and Mariam Din, who were neighbours in an indigenous people settlement, were married yesterday according to Muslim rites after courting for a month, The Star daily said in a report.
They were advised to tie the knot by the head of the village which is located on the fringes of the peninsula's largest national park, Taman Negara, the newspaper said.
The families of the two teenagers did not object to the wedding, the report said. It was the custom of their community that a boy and girl who had reached puberty could get married.
The lovebirds had met while on a hunting trip, when "their eyes met" and "hearts fluttered," before they started dating, the Star said.
The minimum legal age for marriage in Malaysia is 21 but those under 18 years who want to marry can do so with parental consent.

Naughty little trollopes! Daring to look into each others eyes, in a public place no less, despite all the clear Islamic guidance that they are instead to stare at their (own) feet and shuffle them a little bashfully.
C'est la vie, say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell.

You are correct the Druze are not considered Muslims by Muslims, but they are heavily influenced by Islamic teachings....They may call themselves Druze (with an asterisk...Islamic Druze)....

Is Malaysia a good place to meet and pick up Muslimahs? Is it better than a protest rally? I've had some good luck recently at the 'behead those who insult Islam' rallies but I'm always looking to improve the odds, you know what I mean?

And I thought this only happens in Afghanistan:

Something about the information in this AFP story doesn't sit right with me. Particularly: "Sukhri Ali and Mariam Din, who were neighbours in an indigenous people settlement, were married yesterday according to Muslim rites".
Malays are muslims, but the "indigenous" inhabitants of Malaya are not Malays. The "indigenous" peoples, I think, are linguistically connected to Viet Nam, and are some sort of Pagans. They are not muslim, unless converted. This village and its inhabitants are seemingly in the process of being islamified. However, the typical age at marriage for the "indigenous" people isn't clear.
Marriage at 13 yrs old is clearly being sanctioned by a muslim ceremony. Nevertheless, those involved may not be emulating mo from arabia's beloved aisha.

Wrong thread exsgtbrown.
I'm surprised a local paper carried this. I couldn't find any mention on it in the daily which supposedly reported the story (though it wouldn't surprise me if it was being censored).
