Why Europeans Should Support Israel

Don't miss this absolutely superb piece by Fjordman at the Brussels Journal. A highlight:

Europeans need to understand how closely intertwined are the fates of Israel and of Europe itself. The term “Judeo-Christian” is not a cliche. We cannot defend Western civilization without defending its Jewish component, without which modern Western culture would have been unthinkable.

The religious identity of the West has two legs: The Christian and the Jewish ones. It needs both to stand upright. Sacrificing one to save the other is like fighting a battle by chopping off one of your legs, throwing it at the feet of your enemies and shouting: “You won’t get the other one! We will never surrender!” We could always hope that our enemies will laugh themselves to death faster than we bleed to death, the Monty Python way of fighting. Maybe that works, but most likely it will leave us crippled and pathetic, if not dead.

Don't fail to read it all.

Israel is the canary in the coal mine.

Israel has my support.
And Jews have my support within my country and my continent.

Unlike Muslims they dont spend time killing others, subverting the system, they integrate within (and retain some of their own customs).

Athens and Jerusalem.

Athens for the idea of democracy.

Jerusalem for the idea of equality before the law, of individual worth.

Put those two together and you get Western civilization.

The relationship between Athens and Jerusalem has not always been idyllic (to make an understatement); but, seeing as Mecca is targeting them both, it's time to leave the debate for a more leisurely era.

ZionistYoungster, I couldn't agree with your post more.

I've said many times in spite of the rocky relationship Jews and Christians have had, we need to both understand we have so much in common, and all of it is good.

Christian and Jewish fates are the same and we need to face this enemy together. We definatley need to look closely at why we sometimes eye each other with distrust, and forget about it, move forward and show the world what it means to be from truly civilized cultures.

One way to stop the Jihad is to stop Islamic immigration to the West. Next is to reverse the Islamic immigration. This is within our powers to do once we admit that we are indeed at war with an enemy that has its objective to destroy free societies.

Only when the West has the courage to take these steps will it give Israel enough confidence to take the steps necessary for its own survival.

That's the why.

As to the how...good luck with that. Unfortunately, anti-Semitism is as European as Nazism, Communism, anti-Americanism, and Islamism.

Bit of a common denominator there.

Either we stay united or we hang separately. There is no middle ground. STOP JIHAD NOW!

Come to think of it, he does raise an interesting point on which I've seen little written (possibly just due to my own limitations).

That is, the Jewish component in European culture.

When you think of it, Jews having been mingled in amongst the Christian population of Europe for a couple of millenia, and rising to prominance with astounding disproportionate frequency, it would be surprising if there were not a very distinct Jewish influence discernable within general European culture.

In fact, Jewish writings were quite popular among the founding generation of Americans.

But I've seen very little, if anything, written about the subject.

Surprising really.

BTW before anybody goes jumping to unpleasant conclusions about my use of the phrase "distinct Jewish influence discernable within general European culture", I am not talking about the influence of Jewish individuals on one or another human endeavor.

I am specifically talking about the influence of Jewish theological ideas, and of philosophical ideas that can reasonably be considered as outgrowths of Jewish theology or at the outside, Jewish cultural outlook.

One sees intercultural influences in history widely written about. Plato's influence on Christian theology and philosophy, Ukiyoe influence on French impressionist painting, African influence on American music, the list is fascinating and seemingly endless.

But for some reason, I've not seen much on Jewish influence on Europe.

Watching the Hourglass
and Indulging in Perilous Pity
for the Jews

I seek a soothing refuge:
having seen the face of the devil,
having seen the horns of bahomet
rip the fabric of civilization into fragments,
having seen his fingers in the mudra of duality
walking widershins round his rock,
his slaves chained to him by a dark finality.

The picture is bleak, meanacing,
danger smells, a pungent fear
brings coldness to my soul
and, a prayer as my courage wanes,
give me hope, give me strength.

The whispering angel replied
Truth, Justice, Freedom
will never fall and forever prevail
when good conquers evil
on life’s perilous trail,
the myths of our ancestors.
The sands in the hourglass
flow faster and faster,
who is the master?
Who is brave
and will not submit
to be a slave?
You are many
you are the Free.

Ironically, the Jewish people are the best example of successful multiculturalism the modern world has, long before the term "multiculturalism" was even invented.

Within their own communities, Jews keep their own customs, they observe their own holidays, and they have even won some concessions from the larger society. (Many private businesses allow Jews to observe holidays like Yom Kippur. And in some orthodox Jewish neighborhoods in America, the U.S. Postal Service is open on Sunday rather than on Saturday to accommodate Orthodox Jews.) But in exchange for this, Jews are peaceful, they don't force anybody anywhere to submit or convert to Judaism, they work hard (anything from blue-collar labor to white-collar office work to military service to scientific research) in support of their host countries, and the scientific and medical advances made by Jews have benefited humankind.

That track record should be considered a multiculturalist ideal, it's what the multiculturalists are claiming they want for other minorities--but somehow the Jews are blamed instead for just about everything. Go figure.

Shalu shalom Yerushalem

We need to, otherwise we will perish too. One of my goals in life is to visit Israel. I must do it soon before something happens.

Agreed. speaking as a Gentile Christian I can say only this: "O Mother Zion!".
When I read the Koran I was struck by Mohammed's abysmal lack of historical perspicacity when he warned Muslims not to befriend Jews and Christians - 'for they are friends only to each other' (sorry, I've lent out my copy of the koran so I can't give the exact reference). Hadn't he noticed how badly the Byzantine Christians treated the Jews?? I was also struck by the sneer when he is instructing Muslims how to 'refute' the Jews and Christians who say that they are God's beloved children [his argument? - God has no children, and if you suffer it means you're not beloved! - thus Mohammed revealed his abysmal ignorance of both Jewish and Christian scripture and theological understanding].

Let Jews and Christians rejoice in our loving God - who is so unlike the cold, death-dealing, arbitrary tyrant the Muslims worship. And sometimes a mortal enemy can see something - just this once that old liar Mohammed saw what Jews and Christians have mostly NOT seen - that there IS a profound kinship between the Jew and the Christian. Despite everything we are...bound to one another. We both bear witness to a God who loves, who keeps promises, who wrestles with humanity. Abraham Heschel: "a word of God has entered the world that pleads with man to do God's will".

To my Jewish neighbours here and any Jewish person reading this: I hope that, were I pushed, I could follow the example of Corrie ten Boom who prayed, "Lord Jesus, I offer myself for your people, any time, any thing". Theotokos, anthropotokos - God-bearer, bearer of humanity - such are the titles of the mother of Jesus/ Yeshua, but I think they may also truly be given to His people.

joeblough,

I agree with your comments about "distinct Jewish influence." Judaism has given much to humanity ( and it would seem, has gotten little in return.)
Whacky conspiracy theorists have always complained about how "the Jews" secretly run everything. Could someone please explain to me how if they do indeed secretly run everything, why have they never figured out a way to get people to stop KILLING them?!

Anyway, although it is something of an oversimplification, I think it is more or less true: Western Civilization is what happened when the pagan world of the Greeks and Romans was informed ( transformed? ) by Judaism and Christianity.

Common sense tells me that if Israel is wiped off the map, Europe will be in the front line threatened with possibly nuclear tipped ballistic missiles stationed on what was formally Israel. THAT IS ALL I NEED TO KNOW TO BACK ISRAEL. I didn't have my children to have them sacrificed to the delusions of an Iranian Baboon who thinks he can resurrect some long dead popinjay that lives in a well.

I cant believe how much antisemitism is becoming more and more accepted. I guess Mel Gibson's little outburst should have been warning of what the left was turning into. I really think the left is going all out anti-semitic, thinly disguised as anti-Israel or anti-Zionist.

Disgusting. I always though WWII was one of the nobler wars ever fought because it truly was a war between good and evil and the good guys won, but with horrendous casualties all around. How can we forget after so many died? How can anyone who lives in a country devastated by that war be antisemitic now? Maybe I'm just naive but it really makes me ashamed the way some Americans and Europeans are acting. A very ugly wind is blowing indeed.

Most Europeans do support Israel , they always
support the underdog in a fight.
Forget wasting time with any elaborate intensive
training, just show me what buttons to press...i
want to be a martyr !
And do not make it for any trifling sum , make it
hundreds of thousands.
