UK: Muslim takes sauna in hijab

"The pool attendant said she was allowed to wear this due to her religious customs. It was just political correctness gone completely barmy....But to be serious, this is a question of hygiene, not religious rights."

"Muslim takes sauna in hijab," by Jamie Pyatt in The Sun, with thanks to all who sent this in:

A MUSLIM woman in full hijab robes was allowed to swelter in a SAUNA because worried staff did not want to offend her.

She then jumped into the sports centre’s swimming pool to cool off while still wearing the black top-to-toe Islamic dress.

Staff did not know if they should enforce a dress code which asks customers to wear SUITABLE clothes.

People in the sauna — all wearing normal swimming cossies — were amazed as the woman joined them in the steam room in her robes.

Last night surprised Muslim spokesman Taj Hargey asked: “How can you swim properly if you wear a hijab?”

After ten minutes in the sauna and ten minutes in the pool the mystery woman changed out of her wet hijab into a dry one in the changing rooms and left alone.

Yesterday members of the David Lloyd Leisure centre in Oxford said they were baffled by the women’s actions.

Club member Ian Caldwell, 46, was sitting in the sauna when the fully-dressed woman walked in.

He said: “I pointed out that it was a sauna and asked her if it was appropriate. All the other women in there were all in bathing costumes.

“When I saw her in the pool later, she was still wearing the Islamic outfit.

“The pool attendant said she was allowed to wear this due to her religious customs. It was just political correctness gone completely barmy. I told the manager that it was my custom to attend saunas naked, as they do in Sweden, and said I trusted he would find that equally acceptable.

“But to be serious, this is a question of hygiene, not religious rights.”

Taj, chairman of the Muslim Educational Centre in Oxford, said: “Wearing a veil is nothing to do with Islam, it is a cultural tradition."

Taj, Taj, Taj. Why do you say things like that? Why don't you mention the hadith in which Muhammad says, "'When a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it does not suit her that she displays her parts of body except this and this,' and he pointed to her face and hands" (Sunan Abu Dawud 4092)?

There are islamic suits for wearing in the sauna.
Or they may be the sauna itself.
Portable perspiration.

Personally, this sounds like a stunt by one of the tabloids to show up the ridiculousness of PC Britain - and more power to them if it is.

But, once again, no one asked here the pertinent question - where is her male guardian? If she is so religiously observant, she shouldnt be out without her male guardian, should she?

So she basically washed her smelly, sweaty clothes in the pool. Lovely.

I think she was looking for a fight, so she could claim discrimination and sue.

"the mystery woman"

...are you sure the person under the burka was a woman?

......I agree she/he was trying to provoke an incident....

you do not want these people in your neighborhood...Ban Muslim Immigration now...

sounds like a stitch up to me. expect that stunt to appear on a brit reality comedy!

Assalamau Laikum all,

I think she simply missed the heat of the Saud. Going into a Sauna gave her that wonderful lift...as if she was back home.

On her way out...she probably simply slipped into the swimming pool.

nuff said.

I find it quite funny rather, ones needs to look at the hijab sketch shown on uppompeii to realise that...

Isn't it unsanitary for a person to wear a flithy hijab into a swimming pool? That's the point of wearing a bathing suit and why Muslim women have been kicked out of other swimming pools.

Fully clad and hijabbed notwithstanding, there was a man in that sauna. Either this was a joke/hoax or, this Muslim interprets the dictates of the faith less than faithfully.

Assalamau Laikum all ----

Please forgive me. I'm just a nutty Muslimiya traipsing around the UK in a triple layer potato sack. I didn't mean to shock the infidels when I decided it needed a good washing. Next time I'll bring my little Aisha and we'll go --- splish splash just taking a bath long about a Friday nite.

And infidels-- Just look upon this on this as your downpayment on this years Jizya tax

I am actually shocked that the other people were wearing swimsuits in the sauna. Do people in UK actually do that? Is that normal over there?

Posted by: Vera [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 15, 2007 11:10 AM

Nice stunt. Probably a ploy to gain a separate but equal sauna for the Infidelophobes by provoking "insulting" comments. Looks like the world will see what Jim Crow was all about at this rate.

exsgtbrown is right - Who knows what was in the wet and smelly bag. Woman, man or trained bear? In my neck of the woods no clothing is worn in a sauna.

Posted by: MP [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 15, 2007 11:39 AM

Exactly what they intend to happen.... people (infidels) scared to say anything due to the fear of being labeled "racist", or out of fear of a legal suit taken against them.

The same reason the imams caused the plane disruption, now suing US Air. Security and "gut feelings" about these pagan believers will be kept in check, allowing more freedom for them to either commit acts of war, or plainly to allow them to establish a foothold for Sharia Law in the U.S.

Someone should've "pantsed" her in the pool. Or better yet, a male should have disgraced her by "mooning" her.

Muslim women are butt ugly for the most part.I have found it is best to cover up ugly when ever where ever possible!!!

Posted by: BPLP [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 15, 2007 1:22 PM

Muslimahs are plain crazy for putting up with this stuff and then actually trying to further it and coerce others into suffering the same fate.

Posted by: A_Plague_on_Both_Houses [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 15, 2007 1:24 PM

Is anyone certain the thing in the robes was actually a female? This sounds like a most excellent way for a shy but horny Muslim man to check out kaffirahs without risking rape prosecution.

Cast out the demons.

"Yesterday members of the David Lloyd Leisure centre in Oxford said they were baffled by the women’s actions."

I agree with the above posters who reckon shes trying to create yet another "race" incident. Theres no other way to explain this bizarre behaviour. At least I think?? :S

No it is not. Towelling robes or nothing.

don't miss the chance, when a muslim is doing a sauna, get out and turn up the heat.

Posted by: FedUpagain [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 15, 2007 4:09 PM

My former job used to involve checking swimming pool hygiene. Fabric fragments clog filters and thus anything more than swimsuits is completely banned from most pools.

We should also be looking at purely practical reasons for banning all facial covering: it aids criminals and undermines community trust and communication.

"you do not want these people in your neighborhood...Ban Muslim Immigration now..."

Posted by: exsgtbrown

exsgtbrown, your "ban Muslim immigration" is getting really old...can you not think of something a little more original to say? Besides, the woman in question was probably born in Britain; banning Muslim immigration would have no effect on her and her behaviour.

Personally, I think she was a masochistic lunatic, unless this indeed was some kind of stunt.

Posted by: angloirishslav [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 15, 2007 6:55 PM

Mr. Spencer;

I fail to see the point of your comment. Taj mentioned the veil, and the hadith you quote contains no support for the wearing of a veil. In contrast, it contains explicit support for a woman showing her face, i.e. to not wear a veil.

You might do better to fault Taj for throwing out a red herring, the issue here was the hijab, not the veil.

Hmmm... so if I want to hang out in the ladies' sauna ...

---------------

So I've gotta ask, nobody left the sauna when an obvious nutjob walked into the sauna wearing sheets?

And nobody got out of the pool when a bunch of sauna-sweat soaked laundry jumped in?

And nobody complained to the management about how completely filthy, gross and disgusting that is ?!?!?!?!?

----------------

In Japan bathing naked with strangers in the hotsprings is common.

And everyone is expected to take a shower and get good and clean before getting into the water with everyone else!

----------------

But is it really surprising? What do you want to bet that this, er, um .... person, admires people who say that they like death better than life.

Is that very discordant with weird gross notions of hygiene?
