Jihad film gets PG rating

"One has to seriously question the guidelines which allow such offensive material to be allowed into our country and be distributed."

More on this story. From AAP, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:

The Federal Government is moving urgently to ban pro-terrorism films after the classification of a race-hate DVD urging children to martyr themselves.

The film, which calls for the murder of infidels and describes Jews as "pigs", received a PG rating from the Office of Film and Literature Classification, making it suitable to be bought and watched by children.

News of the classification brought swift condemnation from the Federal Opposition, NSW Government and Jewish community, as well as Attorney-General Philip Ruddock.

The film is contained in a package of DVDs prepared by Australian-born Islamic cleric Sheik Feiz Mohammed, in exile in Lebanon, but reported to be still preaching jihad to his Australian followers by telephone.

His film calls for the murder of non-believers in Islam's war on the west. Mr Ruddock said he had instructed his officials to seek agreement from the states within two weeks to change censorship laws so hate films praising terrorists could be banned.

He said Sheik Feiz's film "clearly advocates terrorism acts" but the classification authority suggested "the law did not give them sufficient capacity to refuse classification of this particular product".

The test of whether a publication promoted, incited or instructed people to perform a criminal act was inadequate and material which advocated terrorism should be refused classification, he said....

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies chief executive Vic Alhadeff said it was an "outrage" such material could be allowed into the country.

"One has to seriously question the guidelines which allow such offensive material to be allowed into our country and be distributed," he said....

Yep.

Federal Opposition legal affairs spokesman Senator Joe Ludwig said the PG rating was "completely unacceptable".

"Mr Ruddock must explain how a jihad video by Sheik Feiz Mohammed was given the same rating as The Neverending Story and Back to the Future parts 1, 2 and 3," Senator Ludwig said in a statement.

Yes, I for one would appreciate it if he not only explained, but immediately began working energetically against the distribution of such material, and for the deportation of those who distribute it.

Some thoughts on this...

Philip Ruddock is playing this as a State Goverment vs. Federal Government (ie., Labor Party vs. Liberal Party) issue. He has the authority to ban this DVD set NOW, his inaction is inexcusable, and I for one will not forget.

I don't expect the state (Labor) governments to do anything, the comment by Senator Joe Ludwig above is particularly lame. The problem is not the PG rating, this DVD set should not be here on ANY rating - XXX included.

Can't any politicians understand? - ban this hate speech NOW. Ruddock should be sacked along with the full board of the Office of Film & Literature Classification. None of these people represent the views of the Australian people.

Where's Howard on this?, step in NOW and do something. If Howard is too weak to act, he should stand down.

Sorry for sounding off - I'm just fed up with a government which does nothing. Just a few days ago we had that Sheik in Canberra praying for the deaths of the Australian troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and all we get from our "representatives" are these stupid political squabbles - I've had enough.

Halt Moslem immigration now. Vote out any politician from any party who won't act in Australia's interests.

NO! I disagree entirely. NO TO CENSORSHIP!

First my reaction was the same as yours, but look at Europe to see how censorship and vilification laws are always twisted and perverted and used AGAINST US and not against the jihad freaks!

Vilification laws, imposed by many countries in the EU and in Steve Bracks Victoria, concocted by an alliance of red-green utopian’s and Muslim ‘advisers’- are generally used and perverted by socialist judges, lawyers and politicians, to go after people (like us) who expose the Islamo-fascists and draw attention to the problem. The most recent and obvious example being the case of the two pastors Nalliah from the ‘Catch the Fire’ ministries, who read publicly from the Koran and were therefore accused of ‘vilifying Muslims’ and dragged through the courts.

We have enough censorship already! We have a self-censoring main-stream media that doesn’t dare to ‘hurt Muslim sensitivities’ -by NOT printing innocuous Mohammed cartoons, by not speaking our against the Muhammedan invaders, we have more than enough lefty loony journo’s who are totally befuddled with the perceived ‘underdog’- who see the Islamo-fascists as stormtroopers in the fight against capitalism, and believe more Islamic immigration will ensure that socialism will once again triumph.

To muslims the anti jewish and anti infidal messages of the koran are all G rated and are given to children and adults alike. Hate and bigotry start from the womb in allahlala land.

Sheik yer'mami, I see where you are coming from, but this guy calls for murder. I doubt that can be filed under free speach.

I have thought about this a lot.

The dvd's can be seen as a bit of a diversion.

In fact, look how many people have been made aware of them since this debacle started? It has been all over the MSM and many people, thanks to Aunt Bea who posted the links at DW for youtube again, have since posted these links all over the place.

Is there a way to gauge this on youtube?

However, I believe that Hilali etc has opened the eyes of more Aussies than many of us could hope to do. In that sense Sheik Yer'mami is right, as well as the fact we don't want to lose our free speech, because we need it to get our message across while we are still in the majority.

I agree with the sheik. The people who are in charge of enforcing the law, and the judges who interpret the law, have demonstrated how things will go if there is a law on the books that can be twisted to allow them to crack down on the Politically Incorrect.

If a film can be given an R rating for politically-objectionable content, (rather an neutral stands about sex and violence) what happens to conservative-leaning films that outrage the Leftists on the ratings boards. It's been said that the scene in Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" that most offended the ratings board, and helped earn its R rating, was the scene where Mel hands his young sons guns and instructs them to help him kill redcoats

Possibly the same kind of exception to free speech, such as yelling fire in a crowded theatre, can be placed into law.
Surely somewhere there is an attorney crafty enough to do this!
