I have a suggestion.

Couldn't guys or gals in that city who have good solid martial arts qualifications under their belt, and ALSO sympathise with the Jews and the Israelis, take to wearing a Star of David as a declaration of solidarity?

Then when the Muslim 'youths' try to pull something like this on someone with a Star of David, they'll find themselves - WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! - head down in a garbage bin, sleeping peacefully, waiting for the police to come collect. And they might think twice next time they try attacking a 'Jew'.

(Alternatively, someone qualified as a martial arts TEACHER could quietly offer free lessons to members of the Jewish community in Marseilles. Say NOTHING about it in public, just - train them. Same result, eventually. Muslim 'youths' learn that Jews hit just once and you're down, no mess, no fuss).

Can't someone, somewhere, next time one of these 'incidents' happens, get up a protest march in support of the Jews? NOTE - the 'youths' use mobile phones to gather the 'swarm' - but that's a technique that can be used by the good guys, too, especially if folks discuss beforehand.

Is the Mayor of Marseilles French (secular or Christian), or Muslim?

Perhaps all of us should have this kind of training.
But it isn't going to happen in France. Their record for treating Jews is pretty bad.

They were among the first, if not the first, to round up Jewish children for Hitler. And let's not forget the wonderful Vichy government.

I cannot understand why any Jews still live there.
I remember Sharon inviting French Jews to Israel after that awful incident with the young man. Chirac was very angry. Guess he wanted them to stay to keep his muslms happy and well supplied with sitting ducks.

I have never seen or heard of any Muslim speaking ill of Jewish women. Women are fragiles anyone that attacks them like a fellow man is a coward and MUSLIMS CERTAINLY ARE NOT COWARDS. If they want to get a Jew, there's plenty working around paris and london (men that is)

The truth is that one of the most startling things about Mohammedan culture is that they are quite unabashed about whacking women in public. I've always been disgusted by the way there was no media outcry against the way these people laid into the prostitutes in Lumb Lane, Bradford when they wanted to drive them away (having been their biggest customers before shipping over their wives).
Some of the most striking images from Afghanistan was of the police there, just after liberation, laying into a queue of burqa clad women, with truncheons, to keep them in order.
Ritamalik was saying in a different thread how the Iranian Islamists persuaded Tehran women to don the hijab back in 1979 by throwing acid in the faces of a few of those who wouldn't. As to what goes on in private,you get the impression that being beaten is an hourly rather daily event for a wife in Kabul. The Koran says you can beat your wife and a nod is as good as a wink to a blind Muslim, thrughout the Islamic world.

WallyUK, here's a few moslem atrocities against women more for your list:

There's also the jajaweed/janjaweed(sp?) North African moslems who are attacking Christian and Animist villages in the Sudan. They brutally gang rape the women and afterwards they either enslave their victims, or leave them to die after chopping off their arms and/or their breasts . Sometimes these "brave warriors of Allah" bring female moslems with them on their raids. While the moslem males are committing these brave, heroic assaults against helpless women and girls, the female moslems dance and sing songs mocking the victims for their "ugliness". (Never underestimate the contempt in which Africans are held by moslems of nonAfrican blood-isn't the very Arabic word for African abd' , which literally means slave?)

Then there's the abominable acts being committed in the Mollucas, in which moslem hordes attack nonmoslem villages and force the villagers to convert-conversion being marked by the forcible circumcision of all, men and women alike.

Then there's the situation in too many EUropean cities, in which up to 80% of the attacks against the native European women are committed by "immigrant"-ie, moslem-males.

Of course there's terrorism in general , suicide bombers certainly don't seem to avoid targets where are mainly women and children .

And anywhere there's a population of nonmoslems living surrounded by moslems-the Copts in Egypt, Hindus in parts of India, etc-the moslem males systematically prey upon the nonmoslem women,even kidnapping and raping them to force them to convert.

Far from "honoring" women and refraining from attacking them because of their "fragility" , moslem males seem to prefer female targets for their aggression (because they're smaller and less likely to be armed, one suspects)-and as your list points out, they really don't seem to care if the women victims are even their coreligionists or not.

But I gotta say, even though I'm scared to (please don't flame me!)...This story is being discussed on other sites, and a consensus is emerging that we really need a bit more info on this attack. I'm sorry, but the "writing on with a magic marker detail" is pretty common in the USA in "hate crimes" that turn out to be staged to "raise awareness", etc etc . The very lack of blood and permanent disfigurement of the victim is what is raising suspicion that this might be a hoax-which shows in what esteem moslem males have come to be held by The Rest of Us, of course. I hope we're wrong as a hoax will make it all too easy to discount the many brutal assaults moslem "youths" will commit against women, Jews, and nonmoslems in general in the future. If this attack took place, I hope a security camera got it on film-both to dispel doubts, and to aid in the prosecution of the thugs.

Oh, and FWIW : There was a very similar attack in 2004. The victim in that case turned out to be a mentally ill woman with a history of filing false claims with the police. The other attack does not prove this one a hoax-the attackers could have been inspired by that account-but I do think the similarities are striking:

On Friday, Marie L. reported that six men had attacked her on a suburban train north of Paris after they mistakenly identified her as a Jew. She said the attackers slashed her clothing with knives, lightly wounding her in the process, and marked three swastikas on her stomach with a marker. Before the group got off the train, she said, the assailants overturned the stroller of her 13-month-old child, who fell to the ground.

Does anyone know how many Jews are left in France? I was just curious. We do have thousands of Jews immigrating to Israel every few months. Of course, it is not enough, but it's a start.

Israel is a very different sort of country from France, obviously. It is very difficult for people to leave a way of life that is familiar to them. But, we left America and all the comforts there because we could see the writing on the wall. Israel also needs more Jews, so aliyah is a win-win situation.

as a muslim english who lives in a city that has been attacked by muslim terrorists, i know there must have been a reason for the incident. muslims do not just do these things. perhaps she was wearing inappropriate clothing. muslims always have a reason, for example the reason they bombed the trains here was because of the way english women dress in a very un-muslim way. perhaps westerners should be considerate of muslim feelings and not give them incentive to get angry.
