Al-Azhar fatwa on adult suckling

Here's an unusual Sharia Alert, and an interesing insight into the much-ballyhooed high moral standards of Islam, from the most respected institution in the world of Sunni Islam, Cairo's Al-Azhar University. According to an Arabic article in Al-Arabiyya (thanks to Ibrahim and War On Hate), the Egyptian Parliament is now discussing a fatwa from an Al-Azhar cleric that aims to circumvent the prohibition on a male and a female who are not married to each other from working together in private. All she has to do, you see, is suckle him. Then he becomes her foster child, and they can be together without a chaperone.

This bizarre ruling is based, of course, on Muhammad's words.

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hadhaifa, lived with him and his family in their house. She (i. e. the daughter of Suhail came to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) and said: Salim has attained (purbety) [sic] as men attain, and he understands what they understand, and he enters our house freely, I, however, perceive that something (rankles) in the heart of Abu Hudhaifa, whereupon Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said to her: Suckle him and you would become unlawful for him, and (the rankling) which Abu Hudhaifa feels in his heart will disappear. She returned and said: So I suckled him, and what (was there) in the heart of Abu Hudhaifa disappeared. (Sahih Muslim 3425)

Muhammad tells the daughter of Suhail to suckle Salim. This will make her unlawful to him, that is, he won't be able to marry her because he will be her foster child. Thus it will be lawful for him to be in the house with her, and Abu Hudhaifa will no longer be angry.

There are related ahadith here.

War On Hate has kindly provided this translation of a portion of Al-Arabiyya piece, which notes the controversy over this matter. (War On Hate says that it’s unclear if Dr Atiyya is being directly quoted or paraphrased.) It also registers concern that this topic not be publicized, for obvious reasons.

The Book Removing the Suspicions

He [Dr. Atiyya, the head of the Hadith Department in Al-Azhar’s Usool El-Din Faculty] added that: They [people who ran a campaign starting three weeks ago against the faculty for this fatwa] attacked a book that was written by Dr. Abdul Muhdi Abdul Qader Abdul Hadi, a Hadith teacher in the Faculty of Usool Al-Deen. The book was titled “Removing the Suspicions from the Sunna of the Prophet”. They said that he is teaching it to his third-year students, and that the book shows proof that the topic of adult suckling is a Sahih [sound, or reliable] Hadith, but that it did not explain these matters properly -- it covered that topic briefly by bringing up the suspicion and responding to it....I brought a sample of the hadiths that they were objecting to, including this hadith in detail so people can understand it. We then said, in short, that scholarly studies should not be brought up in the media outlets, because these outlets only give the final conclusion. This makes it difficult for the general public to understand this concept. Hence, a concept like adult suckling needs to be explained in a large public lecture.

Dr. Izzat Atiyya continued: After we refuted their objection with the solid evidence of the adult suckling hadith, they brought their suspicions with regards to infant suckling. They said that it forbids marriage, however it does not permit being alone with her (khalwah). This is despite the existence of a passage as well on this: When someone entered upon Aisha but she prevented him. So the prophet said, “He is your uncle, so let him enter upon you” And when we said that, they accused Al-Azhar University of lying.

[They are apparently referring to this hadith.]

He said that the book of Dr Abdul Mahdi Abdul Qader, which they are attacking, is a study he had conducted at an early stage of his scholarly life. When he now personally teaches some of the suspicions and responds to them, he does not just blindly quote the book. Rather, he prepares for it, and he presents it to his students in a scholarly, simplified manner so they can completely understand its meaning. He asks them to correct some matters that he sees as needing a correction or explanation.

He elaborated: The book served us well, as well as its writer. We have shown that what they are denying is a fundamental from the Sunnah. However, until now there is no independent subject in the scholarly curriculum in the Hadith Department called “Refuting the Suspicions,” which is the title of the book. Nevertheless, we decided that this topic be taught in the next academic year. And until now, we select hadiths that have suspicions, and we explain and respond to them, and the adult suckling hadith was not among those hadiths.

I'm sorry - but this is the first idea that moslems have ever had that might catch on ...

after all - wouldn't a lot of men like to "suckle" the breasts of their co-workers?

Mockery is a powerful weapon.

Unfortunately, there are those who think we must not mock. We must respect, or pretend to respect, and pretend to believe that Islam "is whatever Muslims want it to be" and furthermore, we must believe that there are not merely a handful of the westernized, secularized, rational or close-to-rational Muslims, but that they are all over the place, and we simply have "ignored" them. It isn't true.

Many continue to suggest that we should ignore the nature of real Islam, of what is contained in Qur'an, Hadith, and sira, and instead play Let's Pretend. In that way, they hope, we will not cause offesne to the "vast majority" of (peace-loving, "moderate," put your favorite epithet here) Muslims. Others mistake the benign, westernized exceptions for the malevolent rule. But where has this gotten us? Look at the effort that has gone into encouraging that "Peace Process" between Israel and the Arabs, that has preoccupied so many (Arafat was Clinton's most frequent foreign visitor) ignoring the true nature of the Lesser Jihad against Israel, which required the govenment, and the public, to ignore the fact that no Muslims, especially Arab Muslims, can permanently accept an Infidel sovereign state in the midst of dar al-islam, and that only through "Darura" -- necessity -- , just like those who based their assumptions and made their plans for Iraq, on their knowing, talking to, being impressed by, the most unrepresentative "representatives" (Ahmad Chalabi, Kanan Makiya, Rend al-Rahimn) of Iraq or of what was wrongly taken to be a wider movement of common sense (does plummy-voiced Prince Hassan stand for the primitive masses in Jordan? Does the jovial, port-and-cigars "we're-all-corrupt-men-of-the-world-and-it's-merely-a-question-of-how-corrupt-isn't-it" Prince Bandar truly represent Saudi reality, or aren't these just the Fritzi Hanfstaengls of today, deluding those who have demonstrated that they are dying -- in every sense -- to be deluded.

So, that is preferable and morally superior to a woman sitting at a desk, fully clothed, in the same office as other men and women sitting at desks, fully clothed, all working?

Ridiculous.

Posted by: dennisw [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 18, 2007 9:20 AM

Such paradoxical conclusions are inherent to all religions, but more so with "rule-based" religions such as Islam and Judaism.

Ibn-Rushd, a medieval Moslem philosopher, once opined that, when logic and faith entered in conflict, logic should prevail. Ibn-Rushd was in Andalousia, and when it "fell" to the "Reconquista", his teachings went on to fuel the many bright lights of the Renaissance. In some respects, it rescued the Christian world from much backwardness...

After that, the Moslem/Arab world lost Baghdad and its vast libraries to the Mongols. For comparison, Imagine what would have happened if all that was left of the centers of thought in the United States was Falwell's university...

So, in the Arab world, the remaining center of though that was left, Cairo, was focused on religious matters. Add in a few centuries of inward-looking, mental inbreeding, and you get the fine piece of work that is the Arab/Moslem world of today.

There goes my appetite. Seriously, the Hadith is f***ed up. They had to record every whim, every quirk of Muhammed and his companions? The Hadith is the source of all ills in the Muslim world and in the Muslim communities in many non-Muslim countries. Damn!

I think I've finally gotten it-the world just isn't ready for Islam yet. Most people simply can't comprehend its "values" at all. Islam came to the world too early. Maybe in 5000 years or so the world will finally be ready for it all. Perhaps by then man will have mutated to a point where this sort of thing will actually make sense.

Yesterday, class, we learned that someone in Iran had designed a bicycle with a cage to hide a woman's "uncovered meats." (I am borrowing from Naseem's vocabulary) Today, we are learning, in Jihadwatch 101, that a woman can justify being alone with an unrelated male if she breastfeeds him. We have also learned that a certain form of sex, called 'thighing' is the religiously approved way for a grown man to have sex with a baby in Islamic societies. We are lectured constantly that Islamic societies are morally superior to the societies in the decadent West. No wonder the Muslims in the West want special prayer rooms and require special restrooms where they can perform their religiously approved rituals. After all, even in the morally-inferior West, one would require some privacy to breastfeed another adult or have sex with a baby.

I keep thinking about that historical Salim.

He was undoubtedly so weirded out by the situation that "the thing that rankled" in his blood probably disappeared for good.

But I have a question about women's anatomy, and I'm not joking here.

I thought only women who were pregnant or who had recently been pregnant could "suckle" someone, in the sense of giving them milk through their nipple.

Isn't that what "suckle" means? (As opposed to "sucking someone's boob"?)

Or Al-Azhar, the Harvard of the Middle East, mean "suckle" merely in the sense of "sucking her boobs" without anything coming out? In other words, can the man and the woman be alone if no liquid came out?

Because if it's just the "sucking" part, irrespective of emissions, then we're invited to believe that an unrelated man only has to suck a woman's boob before he's allowed to be alone with her?

Solomonic!

There must be something here I'm not getting.

This has got to be good for mocking Islam. It's a powerful weapon against them. When I see a woman wearing a niqab or burqa I laugh out loud and it gets to them. Funnily enough, when I was approaching one of these women who I'd previously laughed at in a niqab (I could recogize her from the rest of the garb and her general stature and bearing), she flipped the niqab back over her head so that her face was showing when she walked past me. I was gob-smacked.

Sorry, I don't know anything comparable to this in Judaism, or any other religion, much less "all religions". By the way, Judaism, like Hinduism, does not aspire to be a universal religion, much less command jihad in order to impose it on the world.

Also, I don't see anything "paradoxical" in this particular Muslim legal ruling. My only reaction to this news is: "Hooray!"

Muslims are really progressive with - There is hope for the Demonicrats Inside Indonesia 67 - Penis enhancements
Jan - Mar 2002 Penis enhancements
Popular with sailors and miners, but not necessarily with their women
Terence H Hull
Men in some areas of Indonesia have a long history of inserting or
implanting various objects in their penises. The origin of the practices
is unclear, but some writers say that they were copied from Chinese
traders who visited the islands, while others argue it is an indigenous
innovation related to the use of other forms of amulets and inserts for
medicinal and spiritual purposes. The objects used range from the very
simple (the implant of ball bearings under the skin), to the magical (the
use of specially selected semi-precious stones), or the elaborate (gold
bars - called palang - or rings inserted through the glans). Historians
have documented these practices in some detail, most notably in the
annotated bibliography prepared by Brown, Edwards and Moore in Penis
implants in Southeast Asia (1988), and Tony Reid's Land beneath the winds
(1988).
Reid cites Pigafetta's 1524 traveller's tale to describe the Indonesian
palang as having 'spurs' requiring intercourse to be commenced with the
penis in a flacid state, and finished only after the penis has again
become soft, to allow the woman to manoeuvre the palang in and out safely.
Early reports of inserted bells or implanted balls begin with the 1433
report of Ma Huan, a Chinese Muslim who found the practice in Thailand.
Bells were found around Malaya to as far as Makassar.
While these might seem odd and esoteric practices long relegated to
museums or Ripley's Believe It or Not, recent research is finding that the
use of inserts is spreading rapidly among working class men in the
Southeast Asia and Melanesia. The modern manifestations of inserts and
implants are important because they may cause vaginal wounds, inflammation
and infection among the partners of men attracted to these practices. They
can also cause permanent damage to the males, particularly when the
cutting involved is carried out under unhygienic conditions.
For some years I had been hearing of penis inserts in Indonesia, but like
most middle class Indonesians I dismissed the stories as being little more
than sensationalist rumours or fillers for slow news days in tabloids.
Eventually though the growing number of reliable sources suggested that
there might be something worthy of further research.
In February 2000 with colleagues from the University of Indonesia I
examined the records of a random sample of over 700 men undergoing
pre-employment checks for work in the shipping, hotel and banking
industries. This was an exploratory attempt to determine the likelihood of
obtaining information on male reproductive health issues from conventional
clinic records. It was found that one percent of the applicants for
shipping industry jobs had some form of penis implant. Since most of these
men were young and inexperienced this might be taken as a minimum
prevalence among sailors. In the course of our enquiries we found that the
practices were more widespread and varied than we had imagined.
Variations
The difficulty of determining the exact spread of various penis
augmentation practices lies in the fact that they are inspired and
implemented in a highly informal way. It appears that groups of working
class males living in isolated circumstances are quite likely to discuss
and attempt these practices. Interviews reveal a variety of practices
designed to 'augment' the penis and enhance masculinity.
Basic inserts - ball bearings.
Workers in forestry, fishing and mining industries apparently take
ball-bearings from machinery, boil them and soak them in antiseptic, and
then insert them under the skin of the penis, about a centimetre back from
the glans. Interviews in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and the Philippines have
also indicated that overseas contract workers in Saudi Arabia use the
extended residence in highly controlled environments to experiment with
implants.
Plastics - Tops of toothpaste tubes
Throughout Southeast Asia and Melanesia reports are emerging of prisoners
inserting objects under the skin of their penises. The picture to emerge
is one of boredom and isolation focussing attention on discussions of
masculinity (kejantanan) and dreams of future possibilities to 'conquer'
women. Prisoners while away the hours scraping tooth brushes into sharp
instruments to pierce the penile skin, and melt down the caps to form
small balls for insertion.
Silicon
Among transvestites throughout Indonesia the use of silicon implants to
accentuate lips, cheeks, breasts, and other parts of the body is popular,
and easily available through salons as well as some medical practitioners.
There are some reports of Indonesian men, both straight and gay, using
silicon implants in their penises, though this is probably less common
than the use of ball bearings. In the Philippines silicon is used to
create 'humps' around the shaft of the penis.
Semi-precious stones and gold - Investing objects with power
Throughout Southeast Asia inserts using precious stones, metals or pearls
are regarded as providing special powers to men. In Indonesia the
traditions of susuk implants support such thinking.
From ad hoc interviews I have found that men use the devices before
marriage, but remove them when they settle down with one woman. Why, if
the purpose is to please a woman? One explained: 'You can't really be sure
about these things - what if something went wrong? You wouldn't want to
take a risk with your wife.' Indeed, doctors and sex workers do report the
occasional accident when a ring or stud or other sharp object is left in a
vagina, or where women have suffered cuts or severe pain from men's
experiments.
Interviews with social workers and commercial sex workers suggested that
upwards of ten to twenty percent of regular clients of brothels have
either penis implants or holes in the glans or skin of their penises. The
holes may be normally for rings or studs, but during intercourse the ring
is replaced by a piece of horsehair or the strand of a stiff-leaved plant
which is tied and clipped off to a length of three or four centimetres as
a 'tickler'. The putative reason for the practice is to 'please the
woman', and men with inserts argue quite strongly that 'women love it'.
However in the absence of systematic interviews with the lovers of such
men, the testimony of commercial sex workers may be regarded as a useful
commentary on the practice. Many of the women who earn their living from
sex regard the use of inserts and ticklers as both strange and
discomforting. One respondent recalled how one man using horsehair had
caused her to bleed, while another reported great discomfort. She laughed
at the idea that the devices were to 'please the woman'. 'That is what
they say, but actually they only want the woman to reach orgasm before
they ejaculate. It is a sign of their manliness (kejantanan)to have such
control.' At the same time some women report the practices as being
pleasurable.
Demystification
Informal but persistent attempts to understand the practices of genital
cutting and the use of inserts and implants among Indonesian men indicate
that what we are seeing today is not the resurgence of tradition. Rather
these are largely attempts to come to terms with sexualities based on
gender relations emerging from rapid modernisation.
Workers in isolated camps who rely on their peers for information on 'what
women want' are easily convinced that implants may make them attractive to
lovers. Young men who see peers attempting the operations to insert stones
or plastic balls, and hear the bragging afterward are easily swayed to try
the practice themselves. They do not hear clinical evidence of damage done
to sex organs, and they definitely do not hear women's stories of pain,
discomfort or infection. From the viewpoint of men and reproductive health
the response to penis implants must be based on education and the
demystification of large areas of sexuality.
The Indonesian Health Department regards any talk of penis adornments as
esoteric, sensitive and obscure. Reproductive health service providers do
not recognise the problems associated with genital cutting and the use of
sexual accessories because such things are quickly dismissed as immoral.
Whatever the moral arguments though, the practice of penis inserts appears
to be spreading because men's sexual education is incomplete and isolated.
Lower class men in particular are likely to experiment with implants, not
because their sexual needs are any different from other men, but because
they are the groups most likely to experience isolation from women in
their occupations.
Terence H Hull (terry.hull@anu.edu.au) is Senior Fellow at the Demography
and Sociology Program, Australian National University, Canberra. This note
is based on a longer article written with Dr Meiwita Budiharsana to be
published in the journal Reproductive Health Matters. Much of the
information collected here was generously provided by colleagues in the
ANU and internationally. Particular thanks go to the doctors and staff of
the Klinik Baruna in Jakarta, and to Dr Sarsanto W Sarwono and Dra Ninuk
Widyantoro whose work in Timika and other sites in Indonesia has revealed
a range of behaviours normally hidden from routine medical practice.

i do not know or can understand what is more important to be alone with him in one room to work nothing more or just we want to make propaganda for something is really nothing . how come the woman show her breast to milk him to be allowed to stay with him alone in one room to WORK not more

This is almost as funny as the article on how Muslim women marry trees to prevent dilution of family funds (and the negatives associated with marriage to a Muslim man).

So, if, before we were married my wife and I...and, while we were, I...

I can't help thinking that if this line of "reasoning" is followed to its "logical" conclusion I'm going to end up my own Grandpa.

As a single guy, I am not an expert on breast feeding but isn't the milk only on tap beginning with pregnancy and lasting until the child is weened? Does this mean that only new mothers can work with men? Or is the use of hormones envisioned? Is there a minimum volume of milk required per male co-worker? I think this all needs to go back to committee. Has human resources been consulted? Do women get extra pay for this job related duty? What about male employees who are lactose intolerant?

After more than 1400 years the ME Muslims no longer have Christians to contend with, so they can now apply Islam to its fullest effect.

I perceive a Bible would do them a lot of good.
