LONDON, June 22 — At a time of passionate debate over religious clothing and emblems, a 16-year-old member of an evangelical Christian movement protested in court on Friday because her school has refused to allow her to wear a so-called purity ring, symbolizing her commitment to premarital chastity.The case offered a counterpoint to a broader discussion concerning Muslim women who wear the full-face veil known as the niqab. But it also revealed stirrings of resentment among some members of Britain’s Christian majority, who say they are the victims of discrimination over how they display their faith.
The young woman, Lydia Playfoot, said her school, at Horsham, south of London, had told her that the ring broke the school’s rules on uniforms and jewelry.
But Ms. Playfoot argued that the prohibition breached her right to express a religious belief. Not only that, she said in a statement to the court, Sikh and Muslim pupils were permitted distinctive dress to show their religious identity.

I may be wrong but isn't the Niqab not a requirement for a muslim? Isn't it a choice? just like these chastity rings.

I assume Cherie Dhimmi Blair (aka Cherie Booth QC) is acting for Ms. Playfoot, just like she did for Shabina Begum who insisted on wearing the full-length jilbab at school?

The hypocrisy is startling. The number one goal of this government for teenagers is to reduce teenage pregnancy and here is the most fantastic initiative being flatly turned down purely because it pertains to the Christian majority.
If this had been a Muslim initiative it would have been held up as proof that Islam is a positive force for England.
Of course Muslims do have a purity initiative running in England, its called honour killings.

Is pretty disgusting. A symbol of a moral decision that most schools would like to see more girls and young men make - this symbol is not allowed. But the niquab, a symbol of very many things in islam that we don't want, this god-forsaken symbol, will be allowed. So, who is bribing the school board or paying these nutheads off?

sadly you're are all wrong on this. i hate to point this out but all rings, ear rings, necklaces jewellery are not permitted in uk government schools this has been the way for many many years. its a health and safety issue in school. sad but true.

sadly the hijab is not a piece of jewellery which could be caught when a girl is playing lets say hockey or soccer. most girls wearing the hijab probably dont associate with sports at school.
not sure if all schools ban the hijab or if its a decision for each school. but this story is really been twisted to hide the truth. which is, jewellery has never been allowed in schools as its a health and safety issue.
im certainly not defending anti christianity but you've got it all wrong in this story. this reminds me of the story which ran and ran in all the US talk shows fox news etc, which stated that the UK government had banned the use of hte phrase "war on terror", when in fact it was mp benn who stated it (he doesnt represent the entire UK government). this really is a made up non story folks. which so many innacuracies.

Leon- Agreed a health and safety issue-however with regard to the hijab I cant help but be reminded of Isadora Duncan and the inherent danger of wrapping anything around your neck
