"Mohamed Rage." That's the man's name.
Anyway, this is the next battleground in America. We have already seen rumbles of this elsewhere. American companies, as is clear from this story, will have to change the way they operate in major ways in order to accommodate Muslim prayer times, or Muslims will have to find work that doesn't disrupt production lines. Which one do you think it will be?

OMAHA, Neb. — Supervisors at a meatpacking plant have fired or harassed dozens of Somali Muslim employees for trying to pray at sunset, violating civil rights laws, the workers and their advocates say.The five- to 10-minute prayer, known as the maghrib, must be done within a 45-minute window around sunset, according to Muslim rules. The workers at the Swift & Co. plant in Grand Island say they quit, were fired or were verbally and physically harassed over the issue.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations has drafted a complaint to be filed with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The petition compiles testimony from at least 44 workers who had planned to sign the complaint during a meeting Sunday. The signing was changed to a later date because of a logistical problem.
Jama Mohamed, 28, said he was fired in June for leaving a production line to pray. Supervisors would not allow him a break, he said.
"Some of them took the (prayer) mat from me; they started shouting, they started telling me to stop it, and one of them grabbed me by the collar of my shirt," Mohamed said through an interpreter.
"I was crying at the time this was happening to me, and when I finished I told them while they were doing that I was in the middle of a prayer."
Mohamed said he was then called to an office, where a supervisor fired him.
Mohamed Rage, chairman of the Omaha Somali-American Community Organization, said Swift had fired at least two dozen workers for praying since May.
Donald Selzer, an attorney for Greeley, Colo.-based Swift, said only three Somali workers were fired for reasons relating to the issue, and that it was for walking off the line without permission, not for praying.
Unscheduled breaks can force unplanned shutdowns of lines, Selzer said.
"That is a significant number of employees, and there is not much of a way to accommodate that consistent with keeping the production online," he said.
The complaint reprises issues that boiled over in May, when 120 Somali workers abruptly quit for similar reasons. About 70 returned a week later, but union officials worried the issue would resurface through the late spring as sunset came later in the evening shift.

This is a clear example of what our religious freedoms really mean. What they mean is that the government doesn’t endorse one religion over another. A private employer can do what they want. If you don’t like pork, then don’t work in a pork store. You want to take off Saturday for religious observance, then don’t take a job where you need to work Saturday. And yes, if a meat packing assembly line can’t be closed down to meet (no pun intended!) the requirements of your religion, don’t take the job!! Let us hope that these and other similar situations are resolved so that “special status” is not granted to any religion

Simple fact, the law regulates lunches and breaks. Their demands for special accommodations are the same as those made by the Taxis in MN.
My response... forget it. Either work for some one else or start your own business.
This is simple the continuing effort to impose Sharia Law in the US place.

Hey, I can't work at a number of places in my town because they require workers to take Sunday shifts. As a devote Christian, I don't work on Sundays. That's fine with me, it is my choice. If these guys want to walk off production lines to pray, they should not take this work.

I beieve that this is one of the main reasons for non productivity in Islamic countries.
Too lax, no work ethics to speak of, prayer interrupts everything, then the month of Ramadan when fasting stops virtually all work.
How can they have a stable economy?
How can they have manufactoring? An industry of any kind?
Import this attitude to any western country, and theirs will go down the pan too.
As for the dhimmis, work harder to make up for the loss.

If the entire assembly line is interrupted then the accommodation of Muslim prayer breaks imposes the Muslim daily schedule on non-Muslims. A "right" that interferes with the rights of others is not a "right" but a "wrong".
Huntington's "bloody borders of Islam" seem to exist at even the most microscopic level of proximity between Muslims and non-Muslims.

Someone at Swift and Company should have figured some of these issues out before they hired hundreds of Somali Muslims. If the company gives in, then more demands will be made, foot washes in the restrooms, separate prayer rooms within the facility, protests if a co-worker brings a ham sandwich for lunch, working too closely with women employees, protests about company Christmas parties, the list and demands will be endless. Is the rest of corporate America learning from this or are they heeding the advice of their PC human resources personnel?

The muslims are in the wrong here. They accepted jobs that didn't have time for their silliness, oh er I mean 'prayers'. I worked in a factory and it was hard work (which made me realize I needed a better route for my life to take!) but the breaks are at specific times and for a specific time period. I understood this - and it doesn't surprise me that this is happening because no matter where a muslim is now - they will try to start their crap. da'wa, it is called. another tactic to take over the world, and if one way doesn't work - they will use taqiyya/kithman, or jihad.
So, either appease them or they will threaten death.

A recent Iranian E-news service carried an item relating to their domestic petroleum industry (unfortunately I didn't save the link). The gist of the article was that productivity was devastatingly low MOSTLY due to the fact that employees were productive for only 2 - 3 hours a day.
Wonder how that's working out for their nuclear development folks...

In the last five years, work has taken me to the meat packing plants in Nebraska. The Swift plant in Grand Island is one of the most efficient, with a very fast-paced environment. Performance of everyone on the "conveyor" is critical to the overall performance, and it is unthinkable to take a break during high-load time. Management there is highly professional, and would never hire anyone without stressing repeatedly the importance of near-perfect team synchronization. A court should be totally PC-crazed to punish Swift Co. for trying to uphold what is the basic standard for the industry in plants of this type and size. For the politically correct murderers of Western society separation is between church and state, not mosque and state. While Christmas tree in a public place is abomination, muslim prayer times in a private business are perfectly reasonable and can be enforced by the state. How much more dangerous must PC become, before something is done to stop it?

If you CAN NOT do your job on time as required then expect to get FIRED. Pretty simply, and not a religious issue.
When I was working at McDonald's (eons ago) I didn't complain that I couldn't pray any formal prayers during work. I wasn't hired to pray the Rosary... I was hired to wait on customers and help them. If I hadn't been willing to do that, I would have expected to get fired. This should be no different. However, I am expecting these companies to not stick to their rights and bend over backwards for these Muslims.
Now the US Companies are becoming just as guilty of treason as our government. Shame on them.

If Swift gives in accomodates this rabble it will indeed set a legal precident. This IS serious stuff. Time to let Swift know that you won't buy any of their products if they acquiesce. On the other hand, tell Swift that their products will be the only ones that you buy if they fight these thugs. I'd never hire a muslim. I don't care how well they spoke English and how nice their manners were.

What this story points to is the need to drastically reduce Muslim immigration to the US. Historically in the US, waves of new immigrants have been followed by 20-30 year "timeouts" with little or no immigration to allow the new immigrants to assimilate into American society.The Somalis clearly don't share American values like "hard work" and "separation of Church and State".These immigrants need to either assimilate or find work in Somalia. How much of an imposition would it be on a multi-billion$ company like Swift to set aside a few minutes a day so Muslim employees could pray? Christianity and judiasm have no specific prayer time requirements, so there is no comparison. This is similar to Borders book stores willingly placing the Koran above all other holy books as a simple, no-cost gesture of respect to Islam. The real crime here is that ANYONE would have to work in a animal killing factory just to make ends meet. An example of the failure of the american economy.

Multiply a few minutes a day times the number of employees which must stop work - everyone on the line, not just the muslims.
And you know it takes more than "just a few minutes". Just the washing ritual takes time, then the prayer itself. Then packing up and getting the line started again. Lots of interruption. Lots of money.
Swift is in between a rock and a hard place. The mexican's are being deported and the muslims are taking their place.

Actually, in America we get a lot of our furniture from North Carolina. And I hate to break Defender of Islam's bubble, but furniture is much less a consumable product than a shank of ham. How often do we buy furniture, folks? Not as often as a ham sandwich, that's for sure. Once every ten years maybe?
Thanks, Defender for letting us know. I can definitely hang with my old sofa for a while longer and the next time I do buy I will make sure I find out where it was made and won't buy anything that was made in a Muslim country.

Demands from observant Muslims like those mentioned are a real concern and threat to our western ways of life.
There was a case in thre UK recently where a certain group of Muslims demanded closure of a pub near their mosque. A pub which had been there for dozens of years, but hat's not even the point.
So, thanks Robert Spencer and others on this blog for pointing out the reality of threatening demands of false entitlements by religious Muslims, and the aggressive reality of the Koran etc.
Robert Spencer, unfortunately the credibility, and motivation of your commendable effort is being severly undermined and damaged by its usurption by the most primitively bigotted and xenophobic commentators on this blog.
This severly limits credibility of Jihadwatch / Dhimmiwatch.
What a shame that you allowed yourself to be put in a corner by inviting association with the wrong kind of people and by eliciting the wrong kind of support.

....90%?....WHAT is the name of this furniture company?....furniture manufacturing requires vast amounts of wood, you know that commodity that is virtually no existant in Iran, 90% of the worlds furniture would also require vast amounts of leather and woven goods, both of which are hard to acquire in Iran....The lack of wood in Iran is because the Muslims long ago stripped the land of its forests , never thinking about replanting...the leather is hard to find because the Muslims have this religious thing about using animal products, and for the woven goods, the Muslims long ago stripped the land that could grow cotton, never thinking about soil conservation and land management...I do not believe you claim of 90% of the worlds furniture is made in Iran...
....The truth is that Muslims have destroyed every land they have ruled...this is one of the reasons I say "Ban Muslim Immigration"...

Please provide an example.
Really, what is so horrible about being Xenophobic? To me it just means that one considers his/her culture to be superior and does not desire their culture to be diluted by a mysogynistic 14th century mentality. To protect one's culture one has to be Xenophobic. Tolerance and Acceptance are NOT synonymous.
IMHO, we need MORE Xenophobic people in the West. It's the only defense we have to Political Correctness.

Turkey have one of the lagest Furniture factory in the world along with many other smaller one. Muslim countries ate builting up they industrail base while the america industrail based is almost all gone. Many oil wells in america are cap due to short sight law which congress pass saying that all america oil pump in america to be sold in america cannot cost more 8 dollar a barrel which the cost of pumping that oil out cost more 15 dollar a barrel.Alask oil in which 805 is sold to hapon is expemt from this law. Pakistan id the world leader in textile with hight quaity textile at low cost, which is subject to inport quotes in american while american companies make low quaity textile at hight cost.

Muslim countries rely on cheap labor and horrible working conditions. Who do you think is doing all the labor on those lovely skyscrapers in the UAE? It centainly is not any native from that country. Muslim countries develop industry off of almost slave-like working conditions and a non-union atmosphere. If there is such wonderful growth in Muslim countries, where is the growing middle class? Why is it that the West has to provide non-Gulf Muslim countries with Billions of dollars of humanitarian aide? Why aren't these Wealthy Gulf states providing the Billions to aid their "brothers?"
Muslim countries may be building an industrial infrastructure, but they import the bulk of their labor for it. This prevents the laborers from Unionizing to get better pay and treatment. It just stinks to high heaven to me. It is in effect a form of Slavery. Defender, you may just be ignorant or you must have that mentality of "some Muslims are more equal than others."

Your statements regarding the drilling of oil in the US are false. Sinclair Oil company gets 100% of it's crude from within the US borders. It's the only gas I put in my car. I'll even spend a little more money so that I can have the satisfaction of knowing that at least my car is not supporting a bunch of Thugs. As for textiles, Mexico and China produce far superiour textiles to those of Pakistan. I should know as I make my own shirts. The material that comes from Pakistan is crap.

while some muslim countries may have some industry...no muslim country is building up its industrial base....
