And that's just one of the accommodations being implemented in schools around the country. "Some say schools giving Muslims special treatment," by Oren Dorell for USA Today (thanks to Morgaan Sinclair):
Some public schools and universities are granting Muslim requests for prayer times, prayer rooms and ritual foot baths, prompting a debate on whether Islam is being given preferential treatment over other religions. The University of Michigan at Dearborn is planning to build foot baths for Muslim students who wash their feet before prayer. An elementary school in San Diego created an extra recess period for Muslim pupils to pray.
At George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., Muslim students using a "meditation space" laid out Muslim prayer rugs and separated men and women in accordance with their Islamic beliefs.
Critics see a double standard and an organized attempt to push public conformance with Islamic law.
"What (school officials) are doing … is to give Muslim students religious benefits that they do not give any other religion right now," says Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel at the Thomas More Law Center, an advocacy group for Christians.
Advocates say the accommodations are legal.
"The whole issue is to provide for a religious foundation for those who are observant while respecting separation of church and state," says Salam Al-Marayati, executive director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, based in Los Angeles. Many schools accommodate the Christian and Jewish sabbaths and allow Jewish students to not take tests on religious holidays, he says.
Barry Lynn, of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, says however that the law is murky on these expressions of faith. And the American Civil Liberties Union says overt religious symbols like crucifixes are not legal, but whether Muslim foot baths and prayer rugs fall into that category is not clear.
"That's a difficult one, and it's right on the edge," says Jeremy Gunn, director of the ACLU program on freedom of religion and belief in Washington, D.C.
Why? Only because the ACLU, with its liberal Western self-hatred, can't bring itself to acknowledge that foot baths and prayer rugs are just as much religious objects as crucifixes, with no use to nonbelievers.
At the forefront of the movement is the Muslim Students' Association, which has formed a Muslim Accommodations Task Force to push for foot baths and prayer rooms. At least 17 universities have foot baths built or under construction, including Boston University, George Washington University and Temple University, and at least nine universities have prayer rooms for "Muslim students only," including Stanford, Emory and the University of Virginia, according to the MSA's website. The association did not return calls seeking comment.Zuhdi Jasser, a Muslim and chairman of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, which promotes separation of mosque and state, says he is concerned about the accommodations. "Unusual accommodations for one faith at the cost of everybody else doesn't fall on the side of pluralism," he said.
At George Mason University, non-Muslim students were asked to observe Muslim rules in the prayer area, such as keeping men on one side and women on the other and removing their shoes, according to Broadside, the school newspaper. Alissa Karton, assistant to the vice president for student life, said the article prompted the school to order students to roll up prayer rugs when not in use and move the dividers.
The University of Michigan agreed to install foot baths after talks with the MSA, said Terry Gallagher, director of public relations at the campus. Some Muslims ritually wash their feet before praying five times a day.
Daniel Pipes, founder of the Middle East Forum, a conservative think tank, sees the requests as part of a movement to force the public to acquiesce to Islamic law.
"The goal of Islamists is the application of Islamic law," Pipes says.
In the San Diego case, a substitute teacher at Carver Elementary School alleged that teachers were indoctrinating students into Islam. The San Diego Unified School District determined that a teacher's aide was wrong to lead Muslim students in prayer. Carver still has a special recess to allow 100 Muslim students to pray.
The ACLU, which has often sued schools for permitting prayer, says it is waiting to see what kind of policy the school settles on before deciding whether to sue. It says promoting prayers is unconstitutional.
"If you start carving out time in the school day that you would not do but for the need to let students pray, then it begins to look like what you're trying to do is to assist religion," says David Blair-Loy, legal director for the ACLU in San Diego.
Thompson says such conflicts are bound to proliferate. He and other Christians, he says, are preparing to ask for equal consideration such as a Christian prayer recess.
"What you're going to see out there is more of these kinds of cases as the Muslim community tests how far it can go in the public school system," he says. "If this can happen for Muslims, it can happen for Christians and other religions."
As long as political correctness, multiculturalism and fear rule the day, there is no limit to how far the Muslims can go. But I expect that the Christian groups will not find the precedents set for the Muslims will be applied cheerfully or easily to them.

With all these foot baths appearing it is going to get very difficult telling them apart from conveniently, albeit oddly, placed urinals.

Clearly this is a violation of the Constitution's establishment clause. These universities are treating one religion differently than other religions. They should be ineligible for federal funding just like Bob Jones University is. If Muslim students want to attend a "muslim friendly" university, they should finance and build one. Or attend one in an Islamic country.

..i say...let them attend the fine Islamic universities in Cairo, Damascus, Tehran, or in any number of Islamic cities that have universities...The Muslim students will avoid frat parties, music concerts, good libraries, fine cars, good roads, full grocery stores, pizza deliveries, MTV, BET, free travel, nice clothes, freedom of movement, fine vacation travel locations, fine perfume and soaps, and so many good things the infidels have developed and enjoy...The Muslim students can lood for the religious police and will be able to wear the burka of their own choosing, they can cautiously eye the man following them or the erratic moving motorbike approching, if they have a girlfriend, they can be careful to pull the blinds and to be very quiet, they will be able to trust no one, but they will be satisified knowing all around them are Muslims and Muslims understand each other...

I agree with most criticisms of the ACLU--but "liberal Western self-hatred"? Here we go again with the liberal-bashing. I, for one, don't hate myself. Hell, I think I'm the greatest person in the history of the world. And yes, I do hate jihadists. When will people admit that EVERYONE has failed in stopping jihad? Like I said in a previous post, it's not a left versus right thing, it's a stupidity thing, and people in our government--regardless of their political affiliation--have it in spades. Instead of bashing each other, better to bash the common enemy--Islam.

"Many schools accommodate the Christian and Jewish sabbaths and allow Jewish students to not take tests on religious holidays, he says."
Is that so??? I guess thats why we have "winter" break now instead of Christmas break and the "spring" bunny instead of the Easter bunny.
And the American Civil Liberties Union says overt religious symbols like crucifixes are not legal, but whether Muslim foot baths and prayer rugs fall into that category is not clear.
Ow really.... even though innapropriate, try putting a Holy Water fount for Catholic students in the recreation room. I wonder what they would say about that, another "unclear" area?????
"That's a difficult one, and it's right on the edge," says Jeremy Gunn, director of the ACLU program on freedom of religion and belief in Washington, D.C.
If that is right on the edge, I wonder what they consider over the edge. Wait, now I remember, chasity rings....

Your point is well taken, up to a point.
Although it is not a pure left/right issue, overwhelming liberals tend to be Islamic apologists/promoters.
It is probably safe to say that the college administrators in this instance are liberals. They are inacting P.C. policies in regard to the belifs they hold.
Conservatives have issues they have to deal with, (most notable many conservatives being in the pockets of the Saudis) but by and large liberals are prime enablers of Islam.

From an article at Islam Watch
"As I have said at the beginning of this article, spiritual purification in Islam takes precedence over physical cleanliness. Take, for example, the following stipulations of the Quran:a. It requires all Muslims to remove their "ceremonial impurity" by washing their whole body with water. But where they are unable to find water, they have been advised to take clean sand or earth, and to rub their faces and hands therewith.
b. The Quran requires Muslims to undertake the same process after they "cometh from offices of nature," or they "have been in contact with women." (Quran; 4:43).
From Abdullah Yusuf Ali's commentary on the above referenced verse, it appears that the requirement of cleaning one's body with water or purifying the "spiritual dirt" by rubbing sand and earth on one's face after urination, defecation or sexual intercourse applies only to Muslim men, for he stated: "- For a man, when he is ill, cannot walk out far to get water, and a man on a journey has no full control over his supplies. In all, four cases, where water cannot be got, cleaning with dry sand or dry earth is recommended. This is called Tayammum (The Holy Quran, Vol. 1, p. 194)."
These places don't need to install ANY facilities for Islamic ritual washing, since it can be done with dirt, and is not required of women.

This is off topic, but related to George Mason University.
Andrew Whitehead of Anti-CAIR has sent out an e-mail request for assistance. Here is a copy of the request:
New York Attorney Andrew Nitzberg has asked Anti-CAIR for assistance in locating witnesses. Please read the following and help out if you can.Thank you,
Andrew Whitehead
Director, Anti-Council on American-Islamic Relations (Anti-CAIR)=====================================================
My name is Andrew Nitzberg and I am a trial attorney practicing largely in the state of New York. I am the lawyer responsible for the trial victory of Lee Kaplan against Mohammed Salahi earlier this year. (The action was for private speech by Salahi that cost Lee Kaplan several jobs. The 'free speech' defense fell flat because this was for private, not public, speech. The court records and decision are posted online by the California court administration.)I am filing for an injunction against George Mason University for their upcoming conference of the 'International Solidarity movement', the US wing of Hamas.I need assistance in the form of evidence. Of course there is lots of evidence to show that the ISM is a violent, Jew-hating group which directly assists terrorists in coming to their targets and similar activities. But i need evidence admissible in a court of law.
No one will be required to appear in court or to travel (except me -- the pro bono (unpaid) lawyer).
1. I need statements from persons who have directly observed ISM personnel stating things like, "Kill the Jews", "We support the resistance of the Palestinian people even when they engage in Terrorism" , "We work with Hamas in the West Bank and Gaza", "We work with Hizballah".
Persons attending the Michigan ISM conference in (I think) 2002 would be very helpful here.)
2. I need statements indicating that persons have observed ISM persons beating up persons who do not support the agenda of the ISM (this should be very easy- they beat people up every year at these things.)
3. I need statements that persons have personally observed ISM personnel with weapons or transporting weapons. Statements from ISM personnel that admit to such contact with weapons are excellent.
4. There are people looking for the 'perfect plaintiff' for the action. (We have general students (2) eager to sign on, but we would like the 'perfect plaintiff' -- who is a student (BA or grad)/administrator/faculty member who has a family member in Israel. (The Virginia criminal code makes this a very attractive plaintiff). Any Jewish person is eligible because we can shake the family tree and find some relative who is living in Israel.
Thank you for this help. Every terrorist is my enemy because I am a friend to freedom. I am hopeful that I will find many friends in this effort.
Andrew Nitzberg

...fine...let them go to Home Depot and buy dirt and get some plastic bags while there to carry the dirt with them...they can be instructed to "cleanse themselves" at their discretion and deposit the now dirty dirt into a flower bed or a big cermanic pot used by cigarette smokers as ashtrays....
...in this manner they can help the economy by purchasing products, they can be helpful by providing dirt for the cigarette ashtrays and they can help the ecology by suppling new dirt for plants...and they can satisfy their religions requirements all at the same time...
...but do not expect Muslims to co operate and do anything helpful...

PS, why are atheists worried about being nice? If we are but animals, why not act like animals? Who decides what the standard for civilization is? Evolution dictates the survival of the fittest, so why willfully give up your position of the strongest, allowing the inferior to prosper? Hmmm, why?

Coming soon to a courthouse near you: lawsuits against federal, state, and local governments for favoring one religion over others by closing government offices and schools on the Christian sabbath and Christian holidays. Also look for legal action to invalidate state labor codes that mandate premium pay on Sundays and Christian holidays, and also to invalidate any private contracts that provide for such pay.
As for the foot-baths, just bill the Saudis for the cost of the plumbing installation, or simply provide a sand-box.
Wiping one's face with clean sand after answering a call of nature -- I can see that in islam, cleanliness is a long ways from godliness.
at July 26, 2007 11:55 AM
Justamomof4,
No doubt about it, Hugh and Robert have been appropriately diligent at exposing the intellectual and financial corruption at MESA Depts in our universities. I think the significance of Malkin's expose is how that corruption has been introduced into the k-12 curriculum.
PS - Congratulations for your 4 children. What a rare case of fertility these days for a non-Muslim. No one can accuse you of neglecting the future. Conscientious parents can overcome the pernicious influence of a politically-correct educational system by inculcating our children with an awareness of the intrinsic morality and utility of human freedom.
Best of luck.

IMHO the schools are being run by Gramsci-ists, or some sort of neo-Gramsci-ist consensus, and the situation is not only worse than anyone outside the schools realizes, but is also going to get FAR worse still before any serious pressure is brought to bear to reverse it.
This from Wikipedia on Antonio Gramsci:
Hegemony was a concept previously used by Marxists such as Lenin to indicate the political leadership of the working-class in a democratic revolution, but developed by Gramsci into an acute analysis to explain why the 'inevitable' socialist revolution predicted by orthodox Marxism had not occurred by the early 20th century. Capitalism, it seemed, was even more entrenched than ever. Capitalism, Gramsci suggested, maintained control not just through violence and political and economic coercion, but also ideologically, through a hegemonic culture in which the values of the bourgeoisie became the 'common sense' values of all. Thus a consensus culture developed in which people in the working-class identified their own good with the good of the bourgeoisie, and helped to maintain the status quo rather than revolting. The working-class needed to develop a culture of its own, which would overthrow the notion that bourgeois values represented 'natural' or 'normal' values for society, and would attract the oppressed and intellectual classes to the cause of the proletariat. Lenin held that culture was 'ancillary' to political objectives but for Gramsci it was fundamental to the attainment of power that cultural hegemony was first achieved. ...
I suggest that all become lightly acquainted with this fellow's history and thinking, as he has had HUGE influence in the American academic scene, both directly and indirectly through those applying his ideas.
==============
From the same article:
Gramsci stated that, in the West, bourgeois cultural values were tied to Christianity, and therefore much of his polemic against hegemonic culture is aimed at religious norms and values. He was impressed by the power Roman Catholicism had over men's minds and the care the Church had taken to prevent an excessive gap developing between the religion of the learned and that of the less educated.
==============
The commies, anti-capitalists, anti-Americans, call them what you will, are more than happy to make common cause with the jihaddis. The enemy of my enemy blah, blah ...
You will recall that the commies collaborated eagerly in the overthrow of the Iranian Shah that brought the Khomeinists to power.
And there is a visible and growing bond between the left and the islamists in Europe that has been much commented on already.
==============
Believe me, this sort of stuff is not being brought about by a handful of mohammedan crackpots. There is widespread support in academia for anything that supresses or discredits the traditional religions and ideologies of the west.
I cannot overstate the urgency of acting against this development in the schools.

"...I can see that in islam, cleanliness is a long ways from godliness."
Ebonystone, you said it girl!
How can one "wash" with dirt? I don't know about you guys but when I'm told up is down, white is black, in is out and Islam is peaceful I get very disoriented...for about a minute and then I just get mad. The footbaths have NOTHING to do with cleanliness, just like washing with dirt has nothing to do with it. This is just another test to see how much we will "tolerate".
How long will it be before Christmas is no longer a federal holiday, before we won't hear Christmas songs on the radio and it will be against the law to put up Christmas lights? In their quest to eradicate Christianity from society, these useful idiots who lend Islam a helping hand have set a course for us that will invariably end in a war on our land. Since we know the resolve of our opponents and what they are willing to do and how no sacrifice is too great to get what they want, we can expect bloodshed and loss of life in the not too distant future.
It's not about separation of church and state. It's about the destruction of Christianity. And to paraphrase Paul Scofield in A Man For All Seasons, "and when you've flattened all the laws in pursuit of the devil and the devil turns round on you, where will you hide then?"

Joe Blough,
I had to take care of some business and had some lag time between reading the thread and sending my post, so I missed your post. You are absolutely correct. The hand that rocks the cradle...
To think that this is all some accident perpetrated by individual Muslim groups here and there is preposterous. We see how stupid these people are every time they plan a major attack and then something goes wrong to screw it up. They cannot be the ones behind the scenes. They are the ones being used by those behind the scenes. When I was a kid we talked about Communism and it's effects at the dinner table on a regular basis. I remember my parents saying the Communists would use any radical group or disruptive organization that would cause chaos and disorganization in a country they were working to take over. They would fan the flames but let the other people do the dirty work. Then the Communists would come in and and seize power and if anyone from the radical group disagreed, they would be eliminated.
Does anyone really think that our congressmen are so stupid as to ignore the cause and affect of Islam on the rest of the world and not suspect that we might be in for the same thing if they continue to court these people? There would be no argument against the John Doe bill by any rational , thinking leader of our country unless there was an alternative agenda that had a much bigger payoff.

Universities are craven. They are terribly frightened of the MSA/CAIR complex and its constant cries of "Islamophobia" and cave into any demand they make. Being branded Islamophobic is like being branded a witch in weak liberal institutions like universities, staffed by spineless bureaucrats. In addition, since they are like a business, they are deathly afraid of any bad publicity, never mind that getting in bed with MSA and CAIR will bring a lot worse publicity, concessions, double standards and a decline of overall standards down the road. What they don't realize is once they start allowing MSA/CAIR/etc. to dictate policy, they open a pandora's box. MSA and CAIR will always want more and more and more, until they run the place.

I am so mad I could spit. How DARE the ACLU (American Communist Lapdog Underhanders) say 2 diametrically opposed ideas in one sentence. They are waiting to see what the policy is yet they say promoting prayer is unconstitutional. To paraphrase Bill Engval, "Heres your sign". The unmitigated gall to even hesitate for a New York second on wether this is against constitutional law smaks of euphoric hysteria. Another example of the ACLU true colors. Anything having to do with ANY religion except Islam is acceptable but, God forbid a Catholic or Hindu should ask....no demand accomodations as to their religious rituals, we know the outcome of that one. To quote a in(famous) comedian, "Why am I going in this direction and what am I doing in this handbasket"
If this is ever tried where I live (Eugene/Springfield, Oregon home of the University of Oregon) believe me I will be at the head of the line demanding this not happen. I will put my secutiry, job and, if needed life to stop the rampant "muslimification" of my home, state and city.

Just a little while back there was a serious issue at a Canadian University when a Christian-based student group held after hours meetings in a room on Campus property, seems that the Homosexual Alliance protested the meetings for being Homophobic according the the Bible study
portions of the meeting.
BUT, when the Gay lobby forced the University
to kill the practise of religion being on campus property it backfired when the Christians pointed out that Muslim students not only get a Prayer room but promote Jihad against the west and treat the room as a Mosque to indoctrine the Muslims into a Militant islam for a Global caliphate with Sharia law.
And of course the Board then said they needed to review the Policy and assess any allegation
for groups violating the Hate laws or promoting religion on their Property.
Translation:
We fear terrorism by the Muslims if they get offended and we don't meet their demands for spreading islam on Campus , but the Passive Christains are harmless as Muhammed found when he fled to a Christian nation for protection until he built up his Cult followers eager to drink the Cool-aid .

Some really bizarre decisions being made lately by the powers that be...can't believe they are all so stupid, so I wonder if money from the Saudi's would be involved....

UK Infidel Lover: "Well Americans are litigious in the extreme.
So why no action defending the violations of the Constitution here?"
Lawsuits cost money.
Frivolous lawsuits can be filed on contingency if you can convince a lawyer that their 1/3 share will be worth it. Without tort reform, the American system provides no penalties to those who bring frivolous lawsuits, while those accused have to pay for their defense. This is a sCAIR tactic.
Worthy lawsuits where there is no hope of recovering money have to be paid for by the person filing the lawsuit, however. So unless a lawyer decides to do this pro bono, there is little hope. Lawyers tend not to be idealists, unfortunately.
CAIR is effective because it has on-staff Islamist lawyers and can also afford to pursue frivolous lawsuits that may not even have a financial payoff.
If there was a conservative answer to CAIR, more lawsuits to defend against this creeping Sharia activity could be filed. It all costs money.

To quote, "...At George Mason University, non-Muslim students were asked to observe Muslim rules in the prayer area, such as keeping men on one side and women on the other and removing their shoes..."
Hugh, Robert:
Does this qualify for a lawsuit against GMU by non muslim students since they are being asked to practice a religion that is not of theirs?
And what is the conseqence if they do not comply?

When do Christian students get an extra hour of special recess for a worship service or a Mass?
When do Jewish students get Friday off to prepare for the Sabbath?

those footbaths... I bet people might mistake them for trash receptacles and accidentally throw things in them like ham sandwiches...

"Some public schools and universities are granting Muslim requests for prayer times, prayer rooms and ritual foot baths, prompting a debate on whether Islam is being given preferential treatment over other religions.
"What (school officials) are doing … is to give Muslim students religious benefits that they do not give any other religion right now," says Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel at the Thomas More Law Center, an advocacy group for Christians."
