Saudi Arabia: Nigerian Muslim lands in prison for trying to help woman

They were alone together, you see. Sharia Alert: "Nigerian Lands in Jail for Helping 60-Year-Old Woman in Riyadh," by Javid Hassan & Raid Qusti for Arab News (thanks to Twostellas):

RIYADH, 6 August 2007 — A new convert to Islam, fired with zeal to do a righteous act, had no idea that he would pay a heavy price for helping a sick woman, one that has landed him 50 days and counting behind bars.

The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice found him guilty for committing a crime: Being in the presence of a woman who is not a relative (a so-called “illegal state of seclusion”).

Arab News tried several times to contact Ahmed Al-Jardan, spokesman for the commission, but phone calls were not returned. A written fax sent to the commission’s main center asking for comment was also ignored.

Ibrahim Mohammed Lawal, a Nigerian student of Islamic studies at Badiya Islamic Center in Riyadh, learned that his neighbor, a 63-year-old woman, was indisposed and needed medical attention. So he took her to various hospitals in Riyadh, including the Riyadh Medical Complex at Shumaisy, all of which refused to treat her. It was only after the intervention of Sheikh Fawaz, director of Badiya Islamic Center, that the Badiya Hospital admitted the case. Despite the charitable act Mohammed ended up in detention, accused of immoral behavior because he was neither married nor related by blood to the elderly woman.

Speaking to Arab News on phone from his cell in the Malaz prison, Mohammed said that after the woman received treatment and after he returned to Riyadh after three days in the Western Region, he was arrested after checking up on the woman’s health. In the woman’s apartment were three other women related to her.

[...]

“I wanted to do a good thing for a woman who was sick, and this is what I get in return,” he said. “I lost the support of my family in Nigeria, where my wife and children are upset with me — and here I am languishing in prison.”

Wasn't this the country that preferred young girls to burn to death in a school fire rather than allow rescuers to break down doors and free them, because the girls faces were not properly covered?

"Ibrahim Mohammed Lawal, a Nigerian student of Islamic studies at Badiya Islamic Center in Riyadh........"

......I hope he is now really learning about Islam......man, that OJT can be a real eye opener.....

Welcome to Islam, Ibrahim Mohammed. (Is that your new Muslim name?) Can you feel the love?

What I find interesting is how the writer glossed over this: "So he took her to various hospitals in Riyadh, including the Riyadh Medical Complex at Shumaisy, all of which refused to treat her." In a country as rich and religious as Saudi Arabia, he couldn't find a single hospital that would treat this poor woman. More evidence of the humanitarian side of Islam.

This is what happens when someone actually tries to do something decent in the name of Islam.

Poor guy.

Compassion is something that separates civilized man from beasts. Completely foreign to 7th century devil-worshipping savages and their grotesque perversion of "morality". Simply sick. Pathos confronts pathological.

Let's give them another 20 billion dollars in weapons; maybe that'll bring them around . . .

Posted by: Marc [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 7, 2007 2:11 PM

There is no religion or morality (as we understand it) in Islam. You either submit to God's laws or you don't.

This poor young man did this kind act in spite of Islam, not because of it.

Posted by: tanstaafl [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 7, 2007 2:19 PM

Anyone stop and ask what religion he practiced before Islam?

Talk about glossing over...his religious upbringing (most likely Christianity) is what led to this pathos for a fellow Muslim.

Posted by: Miss_Anthrope [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 7, 2007 2:24 PM

I think he was confused about what a "charitable act" means in Islam. Maybe he had seen too many American movies.

Posted by: Jesus Christ Supercop [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 7, 2007 2:30 PM

Islam is not a Moral system. Help the sick and go to jail.

Act on your natural hummanity and you will suffer.

I hope this guy's regretting his conversion. Now let's hear of more people who convert to this insanity and say it's so wonderful.

The story lost me right there. Welcome to Islam my friend. Sorry, no way out.

In Judaism one can - No - must break a law of the Torah to save a life. What this man did is a mitzvah (a good deed). I hope he realizes he chose the wrong religion! But now he can't even convert out - publicly. But I hope in his heart he turns his back on this so-called 'peaceful' religion which is, in reality, a hateful cult.

Posted by: TeachESL [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 7, 2007 3:02 PM

No kiss kiss from President al-Bush for you, Ibrahim Mohammed Lawal!

Posted by: MontyRockIV [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 7, 2007 3:04 PM

Stories like this just re-enforce and confirm my belief that Islam, especially in Saudi Arabia, is not just a cruel, intolerant cult, it's devoid of any sign of simple human decency and logic. In any other religion, this man is a hero who would be celebrated for his compassion and cosnideration. In Islam, he's a criminal.

The moral of the story: If you see a woman in trouble and you live in the Islamic hellhole of Saudi Arabia, run away! Simply incredible.

Posted by: Proud Infidel [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 7, 2007 3:04 PM

Mr Lawal

Return to Nigeria, convert back to Christianity, and hopefully, you live in the south. Take this as an important lesson, and never try doing good for Mohammedans. As the cliche goes, no good deed goes unpunished: this is particularly true of Mohammedans.

Posted by: Infidel Pride [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 7, 2007 3:11 PM

Islam: a religion in which no good deed goes unpunished.

Posted by: GetBornAgain [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 7, 2007 4:55 PM

Surely Naseem could clear all this up. /sarc

"As the cliche goes, no good deed goes unpunished: this is particularly true of Mohammedans."

How true this is, for those people and countries that follow the psychopathic prophet muhammed. Any help given to muslims is considered a gift from allah. Certainly no gratitude is given to these helpful infidals. whether it is indonesia, or pakistan, or iran or iraq. ifidals spent billions ( not to mention, manhours, manpower, and lives), for these people, and still these same people turn around to denounce the same infidals while burning their flags. Now why is this convert surprised that he is in jail. islamic law is law and there are no excuses. so next time this convert sees a burning car with a single islamic woman trapped inside he better run the ther way. islamic sharia laws takes precedence over any secular humanitarian act.

When I was in Oman, Friday was go-to-the-beach day for those so inclined.

The word was, if you saw a Muslim in trouble in the water ... let him drown.

Do that and it was considered the will of Allah that he drown, and that was ok.

However, if you tried to help him and failed, and he drowned anyway, then it was your fault and you would face criminal charges.

I never found out the truth or otherwise of this, but we believed it just the same. Seems like we may have been correct to do so.

I didn't know this but I did know that kindness is highly valued in Judaism.

I hope this man's eyes have been opened sufficiently that he will convert back to his prior religion. It sounds like his wife and children are good Muslims, though, so he'd have to leave them behind, which would be really hard, especially since he sounds like a caring person.

Harden your heart to stay a Muslim or realize your grave error and go back to your previous faith?

If he was a Christian, he needn't fear God's wrath, because of the story of the Prodigal Son, which states emphatically that the Christian God rejoices when one of his lost sheep returns to the fold.

On the other hand, he would have to fear the wrath (and guns and knives and bombs) of his Muslim in-laws.

Saudi Arabia is the Nazi Germany of women's rights. I am the last guy to be thought a feminist but when hatred and fear of women reach such a point of insanity, a nation should be a pariah state. Where are America's feminists now - the evil lying two-faced cowardly shits.

The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice is a body in Saudi Arabia, sometimes referred to as the Yes the "Religious Policemen",or muttawa are at it again.Yep, Mr.Lawa had unknowingly violated khalwat laws. No problem until he went to see how she was doing after her visit to the hospital. The muttawa confiscated all his money and he gets a 50 day sentence in a Saudi prison.
This sort of behavior is common for the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice. On June 12, 2006 there was the case of a disabled 70-year old woman, who had entered a shop while unaccompanied by a man. In the shop was the male shopkeeper. As a result, the woman was thrown in jail.

In November last year, a woman who had suffered a horrific gang rape at knifepoint was sentenced to 90 lashes, because she had been alone in a car with a man (khalwat law) before the incident took place.

Saudi Arabia has not even the beginnings of a moral framework of justice. In March this year, a young woman who had run away from home was placed in a foster home for girls and was additionally sentenced to sixty lashes.

On May 24, 2006 Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayef announced that the mutawi would no longer have powers to detain suspects for hours, in their notorious "harassment" cases. His decree stated: "The role of the 'authority for the promotion of virtue and prevention of vice' ends with apprehending suspected individuals and handing them to the police, who then present them to prosecutors with a report of the incident involved." The order seems to be ignored.

In July last year, the muttawa forced 69 women who worked in stores in Jeddah to lose their jobs. The veiled women were working as sales assistants, selling perfume.

And of course we all remember this horrific and immoral crime committed in 2002 in the support of "Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice", when a fire broke out at a girl's dormitory at Mecca. When the girls rushed out of the burning building, they were not wearing Muslim headscarves. As a result, muttawa beat then back into the burning building. They also prevented firemen from attending the scene. As a result, 15 girls died. There is no moral compass derived from these evil laws called khalwat.

The president of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice is Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Ghaith Has said that since 1980, a royal decree has ensured that the muttawa follow strict guidelines on their behavior.

He said: "The commission plays a large role in capturing people who practice sorcery or delusions since these are vices which affect the faith of Muslims and cause harm to both nationals and expatriates. The commission has assigned centers in every city and town to be on the lookout for these men. As for their fate, they are arrested and then transferred to concerned authorities. The commission also has a role in breaking magic spells, which are found in the sea. We cooperate with divers in this aspect. After the spells are found, they are then broken using recitations of the Holy Qur'an. We do not use magic to break magic spells, as this is against the teachings of Islam as mentioned by the Supreme Ulema. But we use the Qur'an as did the Prophet Muhammad .

For Saudi Arabia to still chase after people accused of "sorcery" highlights how backward its upholders of virtue really are. This is a society still bound in ancient paganistic beliefs that reflect no evidence of the modern civilized world and yet we foolishly continue to look the other way. That is of course until we are forced to confront it head on which is absolutely inevitable.

This opens a whole new strategy for dealing with islamic radicalism. We could just have the Navy dump spells by the millions into the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, and the Saudis would have to recall all the Wahhabi imams they have sent all over the world to deal with breaking the spells. I wonder what they look like and how a diver recognizes one. But no matter, I'm sure some enterprising Chinese outfit could churn them out by the millions, and cheaply.

This incident shows us that the Good Samaritan of biblical parable couldn't have been a good Muslim.

Posted by: John C [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 8, 2007 1:01 AM

No 'Good Samaritans' in Islam then. Mmmm!!!! there are too many words there that should read. No GOOD in Islam then. There thats better and more truthful.

Bush, pelosi? wth?

What are we doing holding hands or even visiting this piece of crap land and not demanding that they be decent in how they prosecute lowly crimes atleast.

Are we insane? This poor guy does a good samaritan act and is told by S.A. that he is a bad man..wth? You muslims that support this type of behaviour and think its ok to be this way are horrible.

Yes, good point, where are the feminists? They are silent except for wage earning in the USA anymore...

As a woman, I find the NOW group highly offensive. They should be fighting things like FGM, burka, and the like if they TRULY care about women's true rights. Where are they on this issue where the guy took pity on a sick woman?

I spit on you for being silent.

Posted by: Highrise [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 8, 2007 5:35 AM

Obviously, this young man must have received some gross perversion of islam to even consider aiding a non-relative women in her time of need. Ignorance of this kingdom's laws are no excuse,as was noted by a poster above, these are the same laws which restrict rescue workers from saving young girls from a gruesome death on account of the girl's attire. Sorry, but there is just no excuse for showing such UNCONDITIONAL mercy toward women or, heaven forbid, the kafir.

BTW, anyone celebrating over the latest earthquake in Indonesia yet? I thought we could hand out candies and have partys like Muslims do whenever a hurricane, toranado, terrorist attack or bridge collapse occurs. Oh that's right, instead of doing things like that the West(US especially)pours in aid, medical supplies(if one can convince the locals that vaccines aren't intended to kill or sterilize them) That's the primary difference right there, unconditional mercy vs. a dualistic code of behavior.

But, but, none of you understand: if you'd read Arabian Nights you'd know that many of the storied clearly outline the risk of leaving a woman alone with a black man (usually a slave in those stories): they always have sex.

So, you see, the SA government is just trying to protect women...

Wasthis woman an Arab? Or was she, rather, a non-Arab Muslim, and thus inferior, and to be turned away by hospital after hospital? Compare this with the most advanced medical care, offered for free by Israeli hospitals, to Arabs who line the waiting rooms, with many even coming from abroad to take advantage of the medical care provided by the presumably unspeakable yahudin.

My husband recently came to the aid of an elderly woman who was being mugged at gunpoint. She wrote a letter to the police department and they forwarded it to my husband, along with a lovely letter of their own, thanking him for being a Good Samaritan (they used the term).

What a difference! In Canada, you get praised for helping a lone, elderly woman!
