....although the government promises protection, have you ever noticed that the government forces are often absent when the attacks occur?.....

In the case of Pakistan, all the religious cleansing that was required was done 60 years ago, so now, it isn't difficult for them to be accurate about excluding Hindus from that 'favored' status. Of course, I look forward to all Muslim organizations in Peshawar to condemn this group for not recognizing Christians as 'ahl al qitab' and giving them the jiziya option.

This is nothing new. Such forced conversions, demanded of all the Infidels -- Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, Hindus and others -- in whole cities or regions -- are to be found throughout the history of Islam. In Iran there was, famously, Shah Abbas II, who ordered the Jews and Armenians of a major city to convert overnight. All of the four major dynasties of Islam -- the Umayyads, the Abassids, the Fatimids, the Mamelukes -- at one time or another or4dered mass and forcible conversions. Among the Ottoman sultans, the padishahlar, Selim I, Selim II, and Murad III were among those who ordered such mass conversions, to celebrate the capture of a city, for example, or the birth of a son. So many suffered it would not make sense to dwell on this or that particular group of non-Muslims. In Egypt, there were two great periods of forced conversion of the original, Coptic inhabitants: there was one period, from 705-730, of such conversions, and then again under al-Hakim at the beginning of the 11th century (the same al-Hakim who ordered that the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem be destroyed). Still a third wave of forced conversions (alluded to fleetingly even by the philo-Islamic Max Rodenbeck in his "Cairo") of the Copots took place in 1293=1354, about which the Israeli scholar Moshe Pearlman has written.

Mary Boyce, the celebrated historian of Zoroastrianism, reports that in Turkobad, in the middle of the last century, a mass attack by Muslims on the remaining Zoroastrians, which involved surrounding the men, and demanding that they all convert, while the women and children were kept separate and threatened with every sort of cruelty and barbarism, managed to cause the forced conversions that, over time, have left what was once Zoroastrian Iran into the Muslim land, the Islamic Republic of Iran, that one sees today. How many of those "Muslims" are simply the descendants of Christians, Jews, and especially Zoroastrians, forcibly converted in the way now on display, apparently, in Peshawar. Answer: almost all.
