Sharia Alert from modern, moderate Malaysia. By Thomas Bell in the Telegraph (thanks to DFS):
Hardline Islamic law could be introduced across Malaysia under reforms proposed by the country's chief justice. As the nation in south-east Asia celebrated 50 years of independence from Britain yesterday, its government was preparing to discuss a plan that would revolutionise the legal system put in place by its former colonial administrators.
As Kuala Lumpur witnessed celebrations that included parades, fireworks and a fighter-jet fly-by attended by the Duke of York, the proposal pointed to the deep differences which locals say are poisoning social relations beyond the glitter and skyscrapers of Malaysia's modern capital city.
Ahmad Fairuz, the chief justice, told an Islamic conference in Kuala Lumpur that 50 years of independence had failed to free Malaysia from the "clutches of colonialism". Sharia law should be "infused" into the gaps created by abolishing common law, he said.
Malaysia's non-Muslim Chinese and Indian communities, who form 40 per cent of the population, are alarmed at creeping Islamisation.
Abdul Badawi, the prime minister, this month joined other leaders for the first time in denying what the British-authored constitution has said for 50 years - that Malaysia is a secular state.
Sharia law already operates in some Malaysian states and is occasionally applied to non-Muslims, as in July when Islamic officials forcibly separated a Hindu-Muslim couple with six children after 21 years of marriage.
The majority ethnic Malays are defined as Muslim by law and forbidden from converting....
In line with Muhammad's dictum, "If somebody discards his religion, kill him."

Creeping islamization of Malaysia can be a good thing for the rest of us. As their economy winds down, which it will under sharia into near bankrupt system, something like Somalia or Afghanistan, then it leaves more of the economic pie for the rest of us. Is France, with 10% islamics, paying attention? Bring in sharia law and the economy comes to a dead stop. Iran is a good example. Except for their oil, they'd be out there with their hand out like the Palestinians.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Some of the world’s top pop stars are facing growing pressure to keep skimpy outfits and steamy dance moves off the stage during their concerts in Muslim-majority Malaysia, event organizers said Wednesday, citing protests by conservative Islamic critics who believe such Western performers can corrupt youths.
Gwen Stefani made what she called “a major sacrifice” by wearing clothes that revealed little at a Kuala Lumpur performance Tuesday. Muslim students and political activists had called for her concert to be scrapped because of her sexy reputation.
Promoters have announced that Beyonce is scheduled to perform Nov. 1 in this Southeast Asian country

Channel 4 viewers in the UK were treated to a 5 minute profile of Malaysia by one of their regular newscasters. It painted a glowing picture of a successful economy and a democratic system under the rule of law that also happened to be a Muslim country. The reporter was the personable and attractive Zeynab Badawi, a familiar and reassuring sort of person to news viewers in this country.

The Western world is slowly heading for a fall. The mortal decay in america is groeing very year.

Defender of Islam can shut his mouth about the supposed 'moral decay' of America and the imminent fall of 'the West'.
I am sick and tired of Muslims pointing the finger at the 'immorality' of the West - or of any other non-Muslim society. I know that throughout its entire history Islam has always accused ALL other societies it has ever met, of being immoral. That, of course, allows it to claim that they 'deserve' the 'punishment' of being invaded, robbed, raped, enslaved, and subjected to the vicious whim of Muslim despots - such as that charming Turkish sultan who had his entire harem sewn up in muslin sacks and thrown into the Bosphorus to drown.
Let 'defender of Islam' contemplate the House of Islam before he throws stones at the non-Muslims.
Islamic countries are whited sepulchres, full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. Behind closed doors and palace walls bestiality, homosexuality, pedophilia, prostitution, rape, incest, domestic violence of every kind, honor killings, substance abuse (not alcohol but opium, hashish, heroin), slavery and bonded labour proliferate; and in the public square one sees kidnapping and abduction, and every imaginable form of political and economic graft, extortion and corruption, together with intrafamilial, inter-tribal and inter-dynastic feuding.
'Wealthy' Muslim countries such as Saudi Arabia score far lower, on key indicators such as female life expectancy, female literacy, and infant mortality rates, than comparably wealthy non-Muslim countries; poor Muslim countries score even lower in these areas, than comparably poor non-Muslim societies.
I would bet my last dollar that AIDS/ HIV, and other nasties such as Hepatitis C, are running rampant right now throughout the House of Islam. Denial, fuelled by the honour/ shame culture, is a REALLY REALLY STUPID way to respond to a disease like HIV. Look at Libya. Those kids in that hospital DID NOT GET AIDS from a few foreign nurses or doctors. They already had it. That means that there are adults in Libya who are HIV-infected. And where and how did the adults get it, pray tell?
(Perhaps HIV will be the long-delayed, long-overdue Vengeance of Kali upon Islam, which throughout its history has so grossly blasphemed against, and sought to destroy and deny, the feminine principle).
As for us in the 'West' - we've endured periods of appalling societal and moral breakdown before (e.g. Hogarth's England; France, immediately prior to the Revolution of 1789 and also during the Reign of Terror). We survived those; no reason why, by the grace of YHWH, we should not survive this era also. See G K Chesterton, "The Everlasting Man", and the chapter therein entitled 'The Five Deaths of the Faith'.
I invite Defender of Islam to visit three web-sites: Taize; L'Abri; and The United Bible Societies. He will discover that many in the West - and beyond it - are standing on solid rock; and they are building, planting, teaching and healing. It is perfectly possible for Western societies to rise like the phoenix.
On the other hand: the imposition of sharia, if adopted, will certainly set Malaysia on the dark path that Pakistan and Bangladesh are already pursuing, the path that ends in a miserable pit of slavery, despotism, torture and fear, such as Saudi Arabia and Iran have already become.

DefenderofIslam (above)fixates on Western moral decay. If I may be permitted the rare luxury of a tu quoque, we can note that the Muslim community in show-piece neighbouring Singapore has not always been a shining example of moral rectitude either.
From Judith Djamour's 1966 "The Muslim Matrimonial Court in Singapore":
"I spent two years in Singapore (1949 and 1950) engaged in field work on the structure of Malay kinship and marriage. My interest soon became focused on the instability of marriage: over several decades the Muslim divorce rate had been about fifty per cent. Singapore Muslims are not exclusively Malay; there are Indians and Pakistanis as well as Arabs, but my study was almost wholly concerned with Malays. [...]
In 1949 and 1950 several Muslim leaders were expressing concern at the high divorce rate and at public meetings as well as in the English and Malay press several factors were said to be responsible for frequent divorce: forced marriages; the youth and inexperience of many Muslim brides; disparity in the ages of the spouses; ease of repudiation; and lack of an official conciliation machinery. On the other hand, no Muslim seriously advocated that Western practices of courtship be followed, that young girls should be allowed the freedom to go out with the men of their choice, or that they should select their own husbands; reformers only urged that parents exercise greater care in arranging the marriages of their children and that they consider seriously a prospective groom's or bride's objection to a marriage partner."
The same author had previously noted in her "Malay Kinship and Marriage in Singapore" (1959):
"Phrases such as 'the sanctity of the home', 'the sacred bond of marriage' or the moral and emotional content they carry, have no equivalent in Singapore Malay culture. No such expressions are used, and certainly the bond of marriage is not considered sacred. I saw no evidence of great moral pressure being exercised by 'kathi' or by religious teachers to dissuade wives from claiming a divorce or husbands from pronouncing it. In the few cases where a woman had been living for many years with her first husband, her pride in the fact appeared to be due as much to the chastity and equanimity which were implicit in her not having sought other unions, as to the triumph of a woman who had achieved a feat rare in her community. This does not mean that the majority of Malays view the dissolution of marriage with total unconcern, only that they accept the situation with resignation.
Singapore Malays above all value harmony in personal intimate relationships. When a marriage union fails to produce even a small measure of emotional contentment and causes strife and anxiety, they find divorce the most obvious solution to their problem."
Travelling through France in recent years I have been struck by the high number of middle-aged and elderly Muslim women sitting on the side-walks in Muslim areas of major cities begging, Marseille in particular.
May we assume many of them are tragic casualties of a Koran/Sharia-ratified patriarchal system of oppressive marriage and divorce?
