Turkish PM says wants to lift headscarf ban

And so it begins. Sharia Alert from Turkey. From Reuters (thanks to Jeffrey Imm):

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was quoted in the Financial Times on Wednesday as saying he wanted to lift the ban on the Islamic headscarf in universities as part of a planned constitutional overhaul.

The remarks by Erdogan, whose Islamist-rooted AK Party won a new five-year mandate in July elections, could reignite tensions with Turkey's powerful secular elite, including army generals, which suspects him of wanting to boost the role of religion.

"The right to higher education cannot be restricted because of what a girl wears. There is no such problem in Western societies but there is a problem in Turkey and I believe it is the first duty of those in politics to solve the problem," he told the FT in an interview in Ankara.

The secularists regard the headscarf as a symbolic threat to Turkey's separation of state and religion. They also fear any lifting of the ban would put social pressure on uncovered women to start wearing the headscarf in overwhelmingly Muslim Turkey.

Methinks I hear the sound of a toilet flushing somewhere, no wait, it's just Turkey and all its recent historical progress being re-routed into the collection sewer where all other Islamic, theocratic societies inhabit.

I object to the word 'headscarf.' A headscarf was something my mother wore to keep her coiffure intact on a windy day. It was take off indoors. We are talking about an entirely different head covering for women, and the purpose is not to maintain your hairstyle.

But I digress. Why don't they ban compulsory hijab/niqab or religiously mandated clothing? This seems a roundabout solution. Will the military press for a constitutional re-write here over protections for secularism?

"Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was quoted in the Financial Times on Wednesday as saying he wanted to lift the ban on the Islamic headscarf in universities as part of a planned constitutional overhaul."
-- from the article above

"There is a Turk, reigns in the East,
Yclept Tayyip. Islam's sly priest,
He puts the hijab back in schools.
But softly. Slowly. By the rules.
First a little, thence to more,
He 'sinuates his killing store."

And into our hearts an air that kills, from yon far country blows.

Yup. Logical first step. 10 Years from now the next step would be compulsory wearing of the headscarf.

The secular Turks will really warm to this sorting out of the constitution.

This from 2005 and it's still continuing:

http://www.globalengage.org/about/prayer.aspx?id=2188

"the Turkish media has fanned intense criticism of Christian missionary activity. Even government ministers have claimed that foreign missionaries had political motives aimed at 'damaging the social peace and unity of Turkey."

The government and the army are complicit in inciting violence against Christians.

This from 2006:

Over the party's four-year tenure, Mr. Erdogan has spoken of democracy, tolerance and liberalism, but waged a slow and steady assault on the system. He endorsed, for example, the dream of Turkey's secular elite to enter the European Union, but only to embrace reforms diluting the checks and balances of military constitutional enforcement. After the European Court of Human Rights upheld a ban on headscarves in public schools, he changed course. "It is wrong that those who have no connection to this field [of religion] make such a decision . . . without consulting Islamic scholars," he declared. Then in May 2006, his chief negotiator for accession talks ordered the removal, from a negotiating paper, of reference to Turkey's educational system as secular.

The assault on the secular education system has been subtle but effective. Traditionally, students had three choices: enroll at religious academies (so-called Imam Hatips) and enter the clergy; learn a trade at vocational schools; or matriculate at secular high schools, attend university and pursue a career. Mr. Erdogan changed the system: By equating Imam Hatip degrees with high-school degrees, he enabled Islamist students to enter university and qualify for government jobs without ever mastering Western fundamentals. He also sought to bypass checks and balances. After the Higher Education Board composed of university rectors rejected his demands to make universities more welcoming of political Islam, the AKP-dominated parliament proposed to establish 15 new universities. While Mr. Erdogan told diplomats his goal was to promote education, Turkish academics say the move would enable him to handpick rectors and swamp the board with political henchmen.

Such tactics have become commonplace. At Mr. Erdogan's insistence and over the objections of many secularists, the AKP passed legislation to lower the mandatory retirement age of technocrats. This could mean replacement of nearly 4,000 out of 9,000 judges. Turks are suspicious that the AKP seeks to curtail judicial independence. In May 2005, AKP Parliamentary Speaker Bülent Arinç warned that the AKP might abolish the constitutional court if its judges continued to hamper its legislation. Mr. Erdogan's refusal to implement Supreme Court decisions levied against his government underline his contempt for rule of law. Last May, in the heat of the AKP's anti-judiciary rhetoric, an Islamist lawyer protesting the headscarf ban shouted "Allahu Akbar," opened fire in the Supreme Court and murdered a judge. Thousands attended his funeral, chanting pro-secular slogans. Mr. Erdogan was absent from the ceremony.

There have been other subtle changes. Mr. Erdogan has replaced nearly every member of the banking regulatory board with officials from the Islamic banking sector. Accusations of Saudi capital subsidizing AKP are rampant

Also, as Hugh has posted, devout Muslims are infiltrating the army. Erdogan is islamicising the entire institutional infrastructure of the country. In a decade or so Turkey will be a fully-fledged shariah state.

Sorry for double post.

Also alchohol is banned in AK constituencies.

Ten years? I give it less time than that. Once the headgear ban really begins to totter, expect to see increasing numbers of Muslimahs with tightly wrapped heads on the streets. At first it will be the true believers, obedient to their male handlers, but with their presence the verbal and physical harassment of uncovered women will begin to amplify. Soon enough it will become difficult, and then unbearable, to conduct one's life as a woman without dressing as Muslimah chattel -- to attempt otherwise will risk assault, rape, and murder.

It's an easy point of attack for Islamists -- always, always go after the women first -- and one that will reap rapid and extensive rewards throughout society for them.

"A nation is never conquered until the hearts of its women are on the ground." Forcing women through abuse and harassment to adopt the choking, muffling, degrading dress demanded by aggressors is one of the faster ways to conquest -- for what does it say about their men?

Erdogan just wants Turkish women to have the same rights they have in the rest of Europe.

Posted by: David England [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 19, 2007 4:16 PM

Civil war in the making. This might actually be good for Europe in the long run. If Turkey goes taliban, even the scum that rule the EU won't have the nerve to impose 80 million medieval barbarians upon us.

I have personal reasons to dislike Turkey, but I actually feel sorry for the Turkish seculars.

Posted by: cruzado [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 19, 2007 4:19 PM

I don't really think headscarves should be banned, except in situations and places where there's a dress code or safety concerns. They only cover your hair. Sikhs wear turbans but nobody has a problem with those.

Of course, there's the problem of family and peer pressure forcing women to wear headscavers even if they don't want to (as stated by Reuters), so perhaps a ban is simply necessary. If Muslims are left to their own devices they'll just force everyone to wear it.

Posted by: Jesus Christ Supercop [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 19, 2007 5:03 PM

Can we at least ban the veil? It gives me the creeps walking down the street, or the halls of the college, and having some individual with a hidden face who can see me just fine, swaddled in an enormous cape that could conceal who knows what.

Yes Elricc, I heard on CNN that Amnanutjob was planning to tour Ground Zero to survey the damage inflicted by the evil Jews.

(end sarcasm, begin outrage)

The blood of the 9/11 victims cries out from the ground because our sworn enemy is allowed to stroll around and revel in the handiwork of his fellow cultists.

I'd like to see the UN Headquarters relocated to Jefferson County, Missouri where that little baboon would be taken on a tour he'd never forget.

UPDATE:

Ahmanutjob is being refused a tour of Ground Zero by the NYPD on "security grounds."

Yes, some poor victim's family member might be looking at him through a rifle scope.

(PLEASE POST THIS ANNOUNCEMENT AT OTHER WEBSITES)

The U.S. Senate Project (an initiative to increase congressional awareness of the nature and goals of jihad) currently has 89 volunteers in 40 states.

WE ARE STILL SEEKING ADDITIONAL CITIZEN VOLUNTEERS FROM ALL 50 STATES, ESPECIALLY THE FOLLOWING 11:

Connecticut
Delaware
Hawaii
Mississippi
Montana
North Dakota
Oklahoma
South Dakota
Vermont
West Virginia
Wyoming

THE PROJECT: We're looking for people in every state of the Union who would be willing to purchase, from Amazon or any other source, a copy of Robert Spencer's new book Religion of Peace? Why Christianity Is And Islam Isn't and mail it, on an agreed upon date, to one of the senators in your state. We want to get the book simultaneously to all 100 senators, in order to send a strong message. If we get more than two people per state, books can also be sent to the U.S. House of Representatives.

If you'd like to participate (or you just have questions), please write to me at traehnam@yahoo.com under the subject heading "Senate," and tell me the state your senator represents, and a nickname. No need for your real name. And I will never share your email address with anyone, not even with other volunteers for this project.

And visit jihadawareness.blogspot.com to get more info on this project and to leave comments other volunteers can read. You can also see there the growing list of participants in this project, and the states their senators represent. I've also designed a graphic that might amuse. Scroll down when you get to the site.

Once we have at least two people from every state, we can agree on a mailing date and then each of us can mail a copy of the book on that date.

Right before each of us mails the book, we’ll issue a press release to media outlets in as many states as possible, and in that way announce and explain the mailing. And perhaps we can come up with some other ways of maximizing the effectiveness of this project and gaining as much positive attention as possible.

One of the project's volunteers suggested contacting Rep. Sue Myrick, who started the Anti-Jihad Caucus in Congress. I'll try to coordinate this project with Rep. Myrick. I've also been calling various congressional offices to get advice on how best to proceed.

As in all things Islamic it feeds and grows on itself. Scarved and unscarved becomes an inescapable distinction. Unscarved= 'more available sexually' than scarved.

The male owners of the scarved womb-beasts then start making life miserable and even dangerous for the unscarved. Relentless and UNBELIEVABLY SWIFT process as we have seen and in no time at all even non-Muslims will be covering up.

Newsflash to those who would like to participate in the project to send Robert Spencer's new book to Congress, but have not signed up because you feel your budget is currently too tight:

A generous Australian (named Ian) has expressed interest in buying a copy of Robert Spencer's new book and donating it, on a first-come-first-serve basis, to any American citizen jihad watcher who wants to participate in this project, but whose budget currently doesn't permit it.

The only requirement to get Ian’s help is that you must have been posting comments at Jihad Watch for at least a short length of time -- long enough so that you are at least a tiny bit familiar here and it's clear you are not someone who would pulp the book upon receipt. (Sorry, Naseem.) The first eligible person who in a comment posted at Jihad Watch tells me he/she is interested in receiving Ian’s assistance will receive the book from Ian so that on a certain date you can send it, as part of our project, to Congress.

After you have posted a comment at Jihad Watch to express interest in Ian’s assistance, email me at traehnam@yahoo.com, and tell me the date and time stamp you see at the bottom of your comment at Jihad Watch, and tell me the Jihad Watch story where you posted your comment.

If you are first past the gate, and meet the eligibility requirements mentioned in this notice, you will only need to provide a mailing address to me, and I will then forward your address to the trustworthy Ian, who will have the book shipped to you.
