Sharia Alert. "Pakistan militants firm on Sharia," by Syed Shoaib Hasan for the BBC News (thanks to Jeffrey Imm):
Pro-Taleban militants in Pakistan's troubled northern district of Swat have told the BBC they will continue fighting until Islamic law is enforced.Located near the country's restive tribal area along the Afghan border, Swat has been the scene of recent clashes with the security forces.
The army last week sent reinforcements to the area.
The authorities say there are fears that the Swat valley is becoming a haven for al-Qaeda and the Taleban.
[...]
In Mingora's main market there is popular support for demands made by militants that Islamic - or Sharia - law should be enforced.
But, most of all, local people expressed the desire that both sides resolve the issue peacefully through dialogue.
Heavily-armed militants
Dozens have been killed in clashes and suicide attacks in recent days, including militants, members of the security forces and civilians.
Last week the government launched an operation in the area against a powerful local pro-Taleban cleric, Maulana Fazlullah, who uses an FM radio station to broadcast calls for jihad, or holy war....
No static at all.

So, give'em what they LOVE!
Can I get a "D"
Can I get an "E"
Can I get an "A"
Can I get a "T"
Can I get "H"
What's that spell?
Martyrdom!

Yes, because that has worked so well in the past. Let me think...a well ordered speech coming out of my mouth or a big guy aiming a machete at my head? I wonder which will be more effective...

Or until the superstate called Talibanistan is created.

Oh wow, a Steely Dan reference. I can't say that I've come across many of those.

It is relatively easy to hone in a predator drone's Hellfire missile on a radio beacon.

Man, I do NOT envy Musharraf/Bhutto right now. They have a heck of a climb ahead of them--a gigantic sheer cliff wall. They better have some good climbing gear.
There ARE secularists in Pakistan--as I recall, there was a large demonstration last year. But they're only centered in the big cities. The outlying provinces are all but completely lost to radical Islam.
Instead of screwing around in Iraq, Dubya would've done better to do something about Pakistan/Afghanistan. But he didn't. (for all of you who keep bashing the left: name a single Republican president who has done anything at all to halt the spread of jihad.)

The REAL shame of it all is that Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, was not much of a Muslim and may have been no Muslim at all--the guy ate bacon with his breakfast and thought nothing of drinking. His vision was for a secular democratic republic. I can't help but think of what would've happened had he lived longer instead of dying in 1947. History might've been different. Maybe.
