Indonesia sentences 41 Christians to five years in prison for proselytizing

Islamic Tolerance Alert. "Indonesia Sentences 41 Christian To Five Years Imprisonment, report," by Stefan J. Bos for BosNewsLife (thanks to all who sent this in):

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BosNewsLife)-- An Indonesian court has sentenced 41 Christian leaders to five years imprisonment on charges of blasphemy because they openly prayed that Muslims "come to know Christ," local Christians and a well-informed human rights group told BosNewsLife Thursday, November 1.

Voice Of the Martyrs (VOM) Australia said the Christians, who are linked to the international mission group Campus Crusade for Christ, participated in a December, 2006, prayer gathering in the Indonesian province of East Java.

"During this time they prayed for their nation asking that all Muslim leaders come to know Christ. Video footage of this prayer meeting was filmed and was leaked to a Muslim organization," VOM Australia said.

The organization quoted local sources as saying that the 41 believers "have been found guilty of abusing the Koran," seen as a holy book by Muslims. "The judge sentenced them to five years in prison". Their lawyers are planning to appeal the sentence in East Java High Court in Surabaya, VOM Australia added.

Why isn't the International community or the UN placing economic sanctions on these Muslim countries for their human rights abuses?

Why isn't the Western media raising these issues?

The pillars of Islam aren't very strong, are they? These tyrants believe Islam can't stand up to prayer and thus must protect their Koran. Islam withers and melts under the light of Truth.

Posted by: Briars [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2007 8:42 PM

The news agency said the video reportedly showed a ceremony of praying youths, dressed in what appears to be traditional Islamic style clothing, while Christian songs provided background music. A Christian leader allegedly showed the Koran saying: "This is the source of all Indonesia’s ills, violence and terrorism."

Meanwhile James Q. Wilson, in his recent contribution to the Commentary Magazine symposium What Kind of War Are We Fighting, and Can We Win It?, tells us that Indonesia is a free country.

Guess again.

Sorry, the link in my comment above doesn't take you right to Wilson, but this link does.

Wilson seems oblivious to the legal discrimination against non-Muslims in Indonesia.

Do we have to sue our own U.S. State Department to cut off funds to Indonesia? And sue the U.N. to enforce their laws on civil rights and freedom of religion?

Posted by: alaskan1000 [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2007 9:28 PM

And meanwhile in the US, you get five years for being Islamophobic. Well, maybe not five years in jail (yet), but you get sued by CAIR or another Wahhabi group and once you get it "resolved" through the all-too-CAIR-friendly courts, with all your legal fees, you are set back five years financially.

The US in its own way is as anti-non-Muslim as any Muslim nation, thanks to political correctness, multiculturalism, fear and Gulf State-funded Islamist/jihadi groups like CAIR.

Come on now, have you forgotten who runs the U.N.? The 53 or 57 (I can never remember) islamic hellholes will make sure their savage brethren continue to oppress with impunity. The UN is worthless and is nothing but a burden to the American taxpayers. I don't have time for a UN conniption tonight so I'll shut up.

Can we start arresting muslims for proselytizing in the United States? It offends me deeply; enrages me; frightens me; and makes me sick to my stomach. Every time I see a muslim I get sick to my stomach. I was here first. Why must I be subjected to such unfair and unnecessary distress simply because muslims believe they are superior to the rest of humanity and have the right to impose their filthy creed on the world? What about my rights, or don't I have any?

All of us should take a cue from the savages and learn to play the victim card. It works for them.

How can this be a crime?

Jesus is a Muslim prophet, too.

Why shouldn't they get to know him?

....this is better than the Muslim version when getting Christians to convert to Islam and know Allah....you know, "Convert to Islam now, or we pull the trigger."

When the Americans here go to the pols. Don't forget that Barak Osama was educated as a young child in Indonesia.
Why is he not decrying this?
As a child my Mother told me that what you learned before you were six is what you are for life.

Some politician over here(uk), a few weeks ago was crowing that Indonesia was a Muslim democracy, and wasn't that just great. Guess we must blame the Indonesian people then, collective responsibility will bring about collective punishment, I hope.

"Moderate" Indonesia.

That is my thought. I don't like relying solely on reports by organizations that have reason to exaggerate or lie to advance their agenda. Forty-one Christian leaders jailed for proselytizing ought to make the evening news alongside Britney Spears or OJ.

Can't make general comments about "getting to know Christ" without being convicted.

Next, it will be confiscations of Christian religious icons...oh, wait.

You have a very good point there even though their Muslim idea about Bible scripture is considerably different than Christianity's.

And the UN is doing such important work it has no time for 41 Christians, or much else that applies to Islam.

Remind me again why we are still members and contribute 20% of the cost of that corrupt, useless organization!

This is the soft underbelly of Islam and its associated tyrannies: it cannot stand without being protected from intellectual criticism, religious freedom, or theological debate. It is clear that the United States will not get a leader who comprehends this, or for that matter that Islam is the source of so much suffering. We would be better off winding down our military efforts to confront the Jihadis on their own soil and focus on religious oppression, Christophobia, Judeophobia and Bible desecration.

I am going to a local "Campus Crusade for Christ" meeting tonight to see if I can organize a demonstration against doing business with Idonesia.

Folks, Google "Campus Crusade for Christ" + your city and state to find the chapter near you.

Let's get crackin' on this!!!!!!

Martel,

There is a very simple reason why the media isn't over this story and the many other stories. The reason is that Christians don't count. Jews count but only when it is in the context of European guilt.

It is the same reason why the media ignored the conflict in Sudan for 20 years or ignores the plight of the Copts in Egypt or the Ethipians under marxism.

Indonesia is thinking why are you Christian infidels complaining? Indonesian muslim leaders are thinking they are muslim people of muslim compassion and sensibilities as the normal sharia punishment for sowing mischief in the land the conduct indicated here is death by crucification or cross amputation.

......have you noticed, Osama dresses like Ahmadinejad?.....loose fitting suit, no tie, top two buttons on shirt loosened.....

....the next time you see Ahmadinejad on TV...just look, most of his associates also dress the same way...

.....it has something to do with not looking too Western.....some kind of protest, much like the hippies of old dressing radically so as not to look like "the man"...

....stupid is as stupid does....

Last night I went to the weekly "Campus Crusade for Christ" meeting at a university near me.

The room was filled with about 75 students. A band was setting up. Keyboards, drums, guitars.

I asked who the organizer was and he was pointed out to me. I walked up, introduced myself. I told him the reason why I was there was to see if anything was being done about the 41 Christian leaders (from "Campus Crusade for Christ) who had just been sentenced to five years imprisonment in Indonesia on charges of blasphemy because they openly prayed that Muslims "come to know Christ." I showed him the article.

Yeah, he had kind of heard of it, but it wasn't on the agenda for last night's meeting. I showed him the print out from the link above.

I asked him: "What are you going to do about it"?

He gave me a funny look. "What do you mean?"

"We need to demonstrate," I said. "We need to broadcast this injustice."

I showed him the international chamber of commerce website for our city and pointed out that they have many programs promoting trade and scientific exchanges with Indonesia. They have an address downtown. "We could," I said, "demonstrate right in front of the international chamber of commerce. Lots of traffic, lots of exposure."

I volunteered to organize the event and handle permits, etc.

I continued: "You got the bodies, the youth, the energy and goddamnit, these are your people, your brothers and sisters, your organization. If the young Christians in this country are not going to get energized about something like this, the future is lost. Are you going to sing and rock tonight and ignore 41 young people like yourself who are facing five terrible years in an Indonesian Muslim-run jail for the crime of praying to Jesus?"

I quoted Matthew 25:35
'For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

The Director took my material, my phone and email and promised to get back. He had tears in his eyes when I finished, but big effing deal!

We shall see what happens.

I may have to be a band of one.

Ynkedoodl2-

I am surprised that they didn't at least modify their plans to include prayer for their brothers.

VOM (prisoner alert) has taken steps to spread the word about the imprisoned evangelist (Daniel). It comments about the 40 Christians being arrested but only confirms that Daniel has received the 5-year sentence.

Don’t be too upset about the “Crusaders” lack of response. I’m sure you caught them off guard. Most churches that I know of don’t feel an immediate kinship with sister churches within their particular denomination. This is evidenced by the lack of awareness of the incident by a leader. When I read of such events, I immediately try to confirm whether it involves members of my own group as one would if they had family in the same area. Concern should not be waived, however, once we realize it’s no one we “know”.

The story of the three Christian teachers is here: http://www.prisoneralert.com/pprofiles/vp_prisoner_149_profile.html?_nc=76a5e16f900ab71e4f557c15cc9045f6

“…An observer who had attended most of the court sessions indicated there were nine trucks of protestors at this final hearing. These protestors brought with them a coffin to bury the accused if they were not found guilty.”

They have since been freed though I’m not sure under what circumstances.
