An update on this story. "Italy: Pakistani man sentenced to 30 years in jail for daughter's 'honour killing'," from Adnkronos International:
Brescia, 13 Nov. (AKI) - A Pakistani man in Italy, Mohammed Saleem, and two male relatives, have been sentenced to 30 years in jail in the northern Italian town of Brescia for murdering his daughter, Hina Saleem.
Hina's maternal uncle was also implicated in the crime and received a sentence of two years and eight months for helping to conceal her body.
In what has been termed an 'honour killing' the Pakistani girl was allegedly killed because she had "dishonoured" her family and refused an arranged marriage.
Hina, dressed in western clothes, wore make up, worked in a pizzeria in the northern town of Sarezzo and lived with her Italian boyfriend. She was found with her throat slit buried in the garden of her family home with her head facing Mecca in August 2006.
Her father Mohammed confessed to her slaying.
When the sentence was announced in the court on Tuesday, Hina's mother broke down and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
The case shocked Italy and sparked a debate about the integration of Muslims in the predominantly Roman Catholic country.
As well it should.

Maybe someday these immigrants will get that murdering daughters is more dishonorable in Western societies than letting them have live-in boyfriends and make their own decisions.

I think that the "internal logic" of honor killings is that in order to save the person you must kill them, what they are being saved from is allahs wrath, by being murdered they are paying a price here for their sins and so will not need to be punished by alla.

This judge had enough courage to hand down the right sentence. In Germany, Benelux and Scandinavia the 'progressive' socialists would have bent over backwards with 'understanding' and excuses for the 'cultural differences'- this guy would be out in 5 to 6 years max.
Yes. German's have gone from one extreme to the other. But it will be intersting to see if anything changes in France under Szarkozy. For the Brits I have no hope, looks like they lost it.

well we get what we allow in hte west.
italians are obviously happy and satisfied with hundreds of thousands of immigrants, illegal and legal flooding into their nation and changing/breaking their laws. if they werent happy then things would be different.
get over it, whats done is done. the italians are not really bothered with this, now if it was a rival soccer/football team, things would really be different. with soccer you can rise up a nation, but islamic jihad in italy, ah, it's nothing, live with it things could be worse, it could be a roma vs lavio riot with thousands laying siege to police stations and burning down a city center.

Was Hina's mother so distraught after her poor child was found murdered in the garden? Somehow I doubt it.

I'm sorry, stickman--I've never seen *any* indication that the purpose of an "honor killing" is to in any way aid the victim, even in some misguided "spiritual" manner.
This is what a Jordanian tribal leader has to say about the practice (thanks to Fjordman's site):
"A woman is like an olive tree. When its branch catches wormwood, it has to be chopped off so that society stays clean and pure." So declared one tribal leader when pressed on the issues of "honor killings" in Jordan, where approximately every two weeks a woman is killed by her male relatives because of the shame she has brought upon her family by an alleged sexual transgression--"sins" which include being raped"
This is all about wiping out a perceived stain on the Muslim family. The "stain" is removed once the men of the family murder the girl.

A 19 year old girl escaped from a shed where she had been imprisoned by her Lebanese boyfriend (the shed was on property belonging to the boyfriend's family.)
She was held there for 9 days during which he whipped her with electric cable, burnt her with cigarettes, burnt her by dripping melted pastic on her, scalded her legs and hands with boiling water. Her hair burnt, her eyes so bloodied she couldn't see, her finger and toenails destroyed, and the top of her thumb lopped off.
The violence had started before this last episode, but he had warned her not to talk to her mother because she was a Christian and that he would kill her family if she said anything.
He had also apparently tried to force into prostitution.
His mother drive him to the police station.

to really punish this man and any other Muslims like him he should be sentenced to hang using a leather rope made from pigskin and his last meal should be ham sandwiches and let it be known that any other honor killings will suffer the same fate

This is the reality now. We can all chime in with disgust at what is happening; the liberal left are exposing the serious weakness in our soft undercarriage by enjoining themselves to the Islamists, or we can do something about it.
Interestingly enough, two belief systems that on the surface are diametrically opposed to each other appear to have found common ground. Perhaps they have the same author?

My sadness is that these weenie european countries don't have the death penalty. They just wring their hands over it and don't seem to have a clue that next it's their throats that will be cut because Islam demands it.

Only 30 years? What happened to life in prison for cold blooded murder? Personally, I prefer the death penalty but the Euroweenies don't have that.
The mother is disgusting. I wonder if she cried while her daughter was being slaughtered.
