New York DMV nixes "Get Osama" plates

"Get Osama" is offensive? Offensive to whom? Can we get a list? "DMV Stifles L.I. Man's 'Kill Bin Laden' Campaign," from CBS (thanks to Morgaan Sinclair):

NEW YORK (CBS) ― He's the most wanted man in the world, or as President Bush once put it, "he's wanted dead or alive."

Just like the President, Arno Herwerth of Hauppauge, Long Island, wants to get "Osama" also, and he's making it known.

Herwerth sports a "Kill Bin Laden" t-shirt, and one look at his boldly adorned vehicle will tell you his campaign against the 9/11 mastermind is at the forefront of his patriotic-led life.

"I feel the man's a mass murderer. He should be killed. He should be dead," Herwerth told CBS 2.

So when Arno, a retired NYPD sergeant, ordered personalized "Get Osama" license plates from the DMV, he said he thought he was being patriotic.

"It's the only way to deal with him. He's killed thousands of people. The man is akin to Adolph Hitler," said Herwerth.

But now he told CBS 2, the DMV has put the brakes on his plates, claiming they are offensive.

In a letter addressed to Herwerth, the DMV said they "prohibit the issuance of any license plate combination that is, 'in the discretion of the commissioner, obscene, lewd, lascivious, derogatory to a particular ethnic group or patently offensive."

Derogatory to a particular ethnic group, maybe? But why should they be offended? Are we to believe now that they all abhor Osama but are offended also if someone wants to get him?

The New York DMV would probably have no problem with GETBUSH.

Posted by: j_not_a [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 19, 2007 5:41 PM

Hold on a minute, stand by, be quiet.

This sounds bogus. New York only allows six (6) characters and spaces.

http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/customplates/cpFAQ.htm#valid_plate_chars

GET OSAMA = nine characters plus spaces.

Somebody is pulling our leg!

Posted by: Pelayo [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 19, 2007 6:11 PM

But why should they be offended?
--from post above

Why?

O, Let me count the ways...

"It's the only way to deal with him. He's killed thousands of people. The man is akin to Adolph Hitler."

Don't trivialize Hitler; he killed millions. All the Islamic terrorists in the world have a ways to go before they're even in Franco's league, let alone Hitler's.

Posted by: sceptico [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 19, 2007 6:34 PM

GTOSMA
thats 6 characters right there.
damn dmv.

it was probably pulled because they employ lots of muslims/ foreigners.

Posted by: TriadBeast [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 19, 2007 6:37 PM

TriadBeast, GTOSAMA? How would a DMV flunky know that this meant Get Osama? It could be anything.

How about GTO SAMA?

I'll bet this guy wrote a letter and asked about GET OSAMA instead of making the actual application.

I'm not going back to the NY DVM page again, but in Tennessee you must provide three choices on the personalized plate application. I think NY would be similar.

This sounds like a manufactured controversy.

Well if you include all the islamic terrorists in the world, not just Osama's gang, then they probably are in Hitler's league. Think of the roughly one million killed in the Biafran genocide, the 600 thousand killed by Saddam's regime, the hundreds of thousands killed in Indonesia, the half million killed in Bangladesh by the Pakistanis, the 400 thousand killed by the Taliban in Afghanistan; plus those in Iran, Algeria, Kashmir, etc, etc. And that's just in comparatively recent years; it doesn't include the atrocities accompanying the India-Pakistan partition or the Turkish slaughter of the Armenians. Oh, they're in Hitler's league all right. Of course they've been at it longer -- my list covers almost 50 years, while the Nazis were in power only 12 years, so Hitler's annual average is considerably higher.

Well, what can you expect after someone had the bright idea of lighting the Empire State Building green for Eid?

Posted by: ISLAMSFORLOSERS [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 19, 2007 8:56 PM

If I were a Moslem, I'd be very offended by these plates.

* 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 *

Fight and slay non-Moslems wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush...
-- God commanding Moslems to murder Infidels in Koran 9:5

If I were a Moslem, I'd be very happy with 9/11 and Osama bin Laden.

Posted by: Alarmed Pig Farmer [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 19, 2007 9:09 PM

If that is offensive...then the plate that I saw driving down the street the other day is too.

Some skin heads, with Hezbollah stickers on the windown and the plate '12thMN' (12th iman).

HOLD THE PRESS!!!

j_not_a

just made an important discovery!

you can only put 6 characters on your plate.

this story is BS.

The DMV may have said no because it was too many characters.

or else you can have more characters?

Posted by: leonthepigfarmer [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 19, 2007 10:49 PM

TriadBeast, one more time. I messed up my posting of 6:43. How many people will recognize GTOSMA as Get Osama? My answer - none. That could be a plate for a Pontiac lover; get it? - GTO.

Anyway, LT Pig Farmer is correct, it is too much like a hoax.

In Tennessee, a vanity plate can have seven characters. If Tenn would allow eight characters, it would be GITOSAMA.

I wonder if he has an "I will not submit" bumper sticker like me! :)

Posted by: alaskan1000 at November 19, 2007 9:25 PM

I can see how that one slipped by. The DMV employee wouldn't have seen the stickers. If I were the DMV person with the power to veto offensive plates, I'd have chalked that request up to a Civil War reenactor in the 12th Minnesota and sent it through. (Of course, as it turns out, there was no 12th MN during the Civil War ...)

DMV = Dhimmi Motor Vehicles

Posted by: champ [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 20, 2007 2:40 AM

Maybe they think it sounds too similar to "Get Obama."

Posted by: RoobartSbunsar [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 20, 2007 6:00 AM

...how about:

BANQRAN
BANKRAN
NOALLAH
NOGOATS
NOFGM
NOMOSQE
BANFGM
NOFTBTH
DNHMSLM (DO NOT HIRE MUSLIMS)
NODHIMI
QRN929
DNF911 (DO NOT FORGET 911)
NOHUDNA
NOIED
NOJIZA
NODAWA
NOIMAN
NOIRAN
NOSAUDI
NOSOMLI
NOLADEN
NOVEIL
NOBURKA
NOISLAM
NOMOE
NOHRKLG (NO HONOR KILLINGS)
NONIJAB
BANMI (BAN MUSLIM IMMIGRATION)

several state allow 7 characters on tags

Posted by: exsgtbrown [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 20, 2007 7:18 AM

Good list sarge. May I add NOMORMOH and NOTOMOH.

The story is not a hoax. I saw Neil Cavuto interview the guy yesterday. He held up the license plate to the cameras. He said it was issued and the DMV changed their minds and wanted it back. He said he will probably be charged and his license suspended if he doesn't return it.

Posted by: j_not_a [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 20, 2007 8:11 AM

However, if osama wanted a driver license...

Posted by: Aunt Bea [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 20, 2007 8:14 AM

Oh, Aunt Bea....funny, but almost true! Luckily, Spitzer's been shot down for now, but you know theses types; they never give up pushing idiotic ideas through.

I am a first time poster, but I was somewhat spooked just last week in Nyack NY, when I pulled in the hotel I was staying at and parked next to a SUV with NY state plates "Muhammed" (not sure whether there were 2 m's or not), but it had more than 6 characters.

Posted by: Hondo [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 20, 2007 9:59 AM

Exsgtbrown, DNF911, for an automobile racing fan, DNF means "did not finish." I'm not so sure about DNF911.

OK, New York allows eight characters.

NYS allows up to 8 characters on a plate. If there were no spaces then GETOSAMA would fit.

Wow, what a bunch of PC twits at DMV.

or VODKAYUM
or UNVEILED
