Human Rights Watch has taken notice of this case. Now, if they noted in their report that the rules preventing Shadia Nagui Ibrahim from officially calling herself a Christian are rooted in Islamic law, and not just Egyptian law, and still called for change, that would be tremendous progress. But they probably have dealt with a gaggle of ignorant or willfully dissembling apologists telling them Muhammad never said anything that would impede individual freedom of conscience. No compulsion in religion, right? Right?

Cairo - An Egyptian Christian woman has been jailed for three years because her father's brief conversion to Islam 45 years ago made her legally a Muslim while her official papers said she was Christian, her lawyer said on Thursday.
Shadia Nagui Ibrahim, 47, was charged with fraud for stating Christianity as her religion on her marriage certificate, unaware that her father's conversion to Islam in 1962 had made her officially a Muslim, said Michael Maurice.
Nagui Ibrahim left home in 1962 when daughter Shadia was two years old, converted to Islam and took on the Muslim name Mustafa.
Three years later, after a reconciliation with his wife, he moved home and re-converted to Christianity. In the process, he got someone to forge his documents back to say he was Christian.
Detained for falsifying documents
State reluctance to allow citizens to put their religion of choice on national identity cards means many seek forged documents that can result in criminal prosecution, New York-based Human Rights Watch said in a report earlier this month.
In 1996, the man who forged Ibrahim's documents was detained for falsifying dozens of documents and confessed to changing Ibrahim's papers.
Authorities detained Ibrahim and also informed his daughter that on paper, Ibrahim was still a Muslim and therefore so was she. Children in Egypt automatically take their father's religion.
Under Egyptian law it is also illegal for a Muslim woman to marry a Christian man.
She was charged with "providing false information on official documents" for stating she was Christian on her marriage certificate in 1982.
After a lengthy trial, she was sentenced to three years in absentia in 2000, but the case was subsequently dropped.
She was detained again in August this year and sentenced to three years after just one brief court session, her lawyer said.

This is more outrageous, and more dangerous, than the 200 lashes meted out to the woman raped by seven men in Saudi Arabia, who also managed, according to news reports, to repeatedly rapeher male companion as well. The Saudi hudud is particularly primitive, and not followed in other Muslim countries less wedded to the Shari'a in letter and in spirit. But the view of Islam as something to which you belong, whether you want to or not, that you are a "Muslim" only because, when you were two years old some 45 years before, your father took off and during his three-year absence from the family declared himself a Muslim, is widespread, is the kind of thing that any Muslim regime is quite capable of enforcing through its courts.
The individual, and the individual conscience, does not exist in Islam. You are born into the Army of Islam, or you join the Army of Islam. It doesn't matter if you are quite aware of this, or if it happened only because, as in this case, a parent did something when you were two. You are now a member of the Army of Islam, and you cannot ever get out, because if organized Islam allowed that, a great many people, one suspects, would decide to leave.
No. Such people, such would-be deserters from the Army of Islam, must be informed that of course there is "compulsion in religion." There has been, despite that 2.256 constantly-quoted by Muslim apologists secure in their belief that Infidels will take that phrase at face value, and endow it with a meaning it does not possess for Muslims, a 1350-year history of denying freedom of conscience in Islam. This is done to non-Muslims, by making their lives so potentially onerous that many yielded to their conquerors, and over time became Muslims. It was their only way out of a situation that was always difficult, and at times, intolerable and physically dangerous. This is done to those who are labelled as "Muslims" by not allowing them the right to leave Islam, for another religion or for none at all.
Cut that aid. See Egypt, see Jordan, see all of these countries for what they are. Stop transferring more aid, and work to diminish the oil and other revenues of Saudi Arabia and other enemies of Infidels. And force the poor Arabs to get whatever they can get by going to the rich Arabs. It will cause resentment on both sides, and that is to be encouraged.

And every other non-Muslim country should follow suit, as regards aid of any kind to any Muslim country that does what Egypt is doing to Shadia Ibrahim.
For example: Australia should not be giving any assistance to Malaysia, after the Lina Joy case became known. Australia should have broken off all financial and other assistance (such as military training - good god, we're stupid!) to Indonesia, the moment we learned that jihad raiding groups were mass-murdering Christians in the Moluccas, and elsewhere, with the tacit connivance of the Indonesia authorities.
And stop the jizya.
They attack us even while we pay it. (Which was the case for all dhimmi populations, historically - the so-called 'protection' was not worth spit).
So what do we lose by stopping payment? Nothing. We do still have weapons. We have not been disarmed, as the dhimmis were. And when they attack, we can defend ourselves.
There's something else. We don't have to wait for our governments to act, those of us who are shoppers, or businesspeople. And although we're still stuck with mid-east oil, we can stop buying anything else that comes out of the Muslim world.
I am now resolved to NOT BUY any product marked as made in a Muslim country - e.g. dates from the Middle East, apricots from Turkey, spices, jam or cotton goods from Egypt, condiments from Malaysia, spices and paper from Indonesia. Instead: actively seek out products from countries like Thailand, India, the Philippines or Israel. They need that money to pay for their self-defence.
The same goes for businesspeople - direct your investments selectively. When the lynch mob howls for divestment from Israel - do the opposite. And consider how you can assist India, Thailand, the Philippines with carefully targeted investment to boost their ability to squash the jihad against them. And ways - perhaps through the church - of strengthening civil society, and thus the capacity for self-defence, in Christian-majority countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Congo and Ghana, that are on the African frontline against the Jihad.
Besides avoiding products from Muslim countries, we can also universally boycott Muslim-owned businesses, here in the West.
My own country, foolishly, sells camels (yes, camels!), sheep and wheat to Muslim countries. We could stop selling them stuff - there are plenty of other people in the world to sell things to - and make it clear that we are doing so because of their atrocious treatment of their non-Muslim minorities.

...well, some HAVE shrugged it off--like Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Ibn Warraq, etc. It's not fatal, but pretty damn close to it. I can't think of a disease that would accurately describe it, though. Something difficult--but not impossible--to cure. Retardation, maybe?

Yes, cut all aid to Egypt... but don't stop there!
Demand Egypt repay every single penny they've ever received from Christian majority countries. When they refuse, we occupy the Suez Canal, then take all of Sinai and the Goshen triangle, establishing a new state with Alexandria as its capital. Invite all Coptic Christians to move into this new state of Egypt-Goshen while expeling all Muslims to the rump-Egypt of Cairo southward.
There is historical justification for this since ancient Egypt was divided into Lower Egypt in the north and Upper Egypt in the south except that the new Lower Egypt will be Christian. This also creates a friendly Coptic Egypt as a buffer state between the Muslims and Israel.

What does this woman's husband say about this? I assume he had the opportunity to protect her from detention and find a new home in a friendlier place. Instead she and millions of other muslim women will forever pay the price for the arrogance and vanity of this evil religion.
