Sudan: British teacher arrested after her pupils name teddy bear Muhammad

An innocent mistake! "'Muhammad' teddy teacher arrested," from the BBC (thanks to all who sent this in):

A British school teacher has been arrested in Sudan accused of insulting Islam's Prophet, after she allowed her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, said she made an "innocent mistake" by letting the six and seven-year-olds choose the name.

Ms Gibbons was arrested after several parents made complaints.

A spokesman from the British Embassy in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, said it was unclear whether she had been charged.

Embassy officials are expected to visit Mrs Gibbons in custody on Monday.

The BBC's correspondent Amber Henshaw said Ms Gibbons' punishment could be up to six months in jail, 40 lashes or a fine.

The school has been closed until January for fear of reprisals.

Madness. And yet the world tiptoes around and tries to accommodate this madness, instead of calling it what it is.

Not only do they tiptoe around they even introduce criminal law that forbids a citizen of a democracy from openly stating the obvious madness of such foolish people.
This, and the punishment of the rape victim in Saudi Arabia, is entirely due to the Religion of Peace. Everybody knows it is utterly crazy, our (UK) government must know it is crazy but they will prosecute, or at least caution, anyone here who states it by labelling them Islamophobic.
When will we ever learn?

When I quickly read this headline I missed the 'Sudan' bit and assumed it had happened in the UK.
Not a far-fetched assumption to make.

It's okay that hundreds of thousands of maniacal sociopaths are named Mohammed, but call an innocent teddy bear that and Islamic Rageboy shows up.

This is a good example as to why mindcrime laws about insulting religion are entirely unacceptable.

"The country's state-controlled Sudanese Media Centre reported that charges were being prepared 'under article 125 of the criminal law' which covers insults against faith and religion."

I believe that many Islam parents name their male children "Mohammed".

Should these parents suffer the instrumentality of the Islamic state?

Posted by: tanstaafl [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 26, 2007 11:06 AM

And I'll bet the teacher was a totally sensitive multi-culti liberal eager to help the Third World after the brutal of Western Imperialism.

Posted by: poetcomic1 [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 26, 2007 11:47 AM

If Islam wants to be insulted, let's give an insult worthy of indignation. I propose that from now on, instead of having a "BM" we have a "Mohammed."
Jesu Christo, getting all po'd because their own children named a teddy bear, Mohammed. What if the offending kafir of a bear had been named Jesus?

They do, also in Sweden, and it is one of the most popular piggy banks sold

I can't help thinking - what is a non-islamic person doing in a war-zone?

Obviously, she didn't read up on the rule of islam and the koran!

And the parents, why didn't they go directly to her and tell her she couldn't do it? Settle the problem directly?

It's also obvious, the Sudanese don't know the value of the education this woman was offering.

My conclusion is on one hand, the teacher thought she was dealing with a culture and religion JUST like the West - you know, all religions are to be equally respected. Now she knows better.
OOOHH, it's so hard to hold back on thinking, refuse to continue to think that "went looking for trouble, and she found it."

Those countries - Africa - the Mideast - Asia - oh, God, I mentioned Afghanistan (the Himalayas - all God's country - SPLENDID - WONDROUS - but oh, so dangerous for women - even men. But women cannot be alone there - and even men must travel in groups and under the sponsorship of mountain climbing companies - [why would people want to climb mountains? go through the hardship of 3-4-5 desolate camps - ea. day higher, then lower, then higher again - and the ropes, and the lack of air, and the danger of falling down mountains - the chills and sweats, and danger of dehidrating, when one's can't see down and the world around them - BECAUSE THE MOUNTAIN IS TO D***N HIGH?])

I see the stupid travelogues on the DIscovery Channel and such, where the young woman goes to the Central Asian countries, wearing an ugly mini skirt - and I marvel - HOW UNREALISTIC! The only thing that keeps her safe is the male film crew with her.

But, really, NO ONE is safe in those countries - even their own citizens- they even make a faux pas.

What a shame that that religion appeals to the lowest instincts of man - and encourages acting on those base instincts.

poetcomic1 - I would not bet against your appraisal of this unfortunate teacher. After all, these followers of the prophet are mommys and daddys too. If she survives this adventure, might I suggest that her next bear be named Paddington.

I noticed in the full article that this is a Christian ran school and they quoted a Bishop with the school as saying that 'the school and the goverment are in a dispute over increased taxes (jizya?) and that this teacher is getting caught in the politics of that dispute as blackmale'.

Is this Jizya happening?

If a Teddy Bear named 'Muhammad' is an insult to the prophet, then what about all of these idiots walking around named 'Muhammad'?

Posted by: alaskan1000 [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 26, 2007 12:54 PM

It should be a lesson to the teacher, the Foreign Office and anyone wh is reading the article.

But I don't think that much learning will be done.

There was a case in the UK where some sex shop sold a blow up doll named Mustafa (or something like that). The muzzies went wild as it was a variation on the name Mohammed.

Anyway, teddy bears are cuddly, cute little things we all recall from childhood. They snuggle up with a child in bed. They certainly don't rape 9 year olds.

Posted by: Celsius [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 26, 2007 1:02 PM

They don't need teachers in Liverpool? Why is she spending her time in a place that will whip her 40 times for naming a teddy bear?

Remember, all cultures are the same, all people want the same things, all religions are the same.

Once again we see the freak show that is sharia.

It beggars belief that the UK government still bend over backwards for this so called religion. It's like the Nazis all over again.

Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.........until it's too late.

I wonder what it WILL take for the UK government to wake up to the threat this cult poses to the world.

US and UK should give Sudan an ultimatum. Release the hostage or face the consequences. Gordon Brown and George Bush need to act. This hostage taking shows that the policy of appeasement of Islamic states from before 9-11 that has been continued after 9-11 is a failure.

----------------------------

How about an inflatable sex doll named Ayesha, Fatima, or Khadija.

It could have two versions: the first with full hijab that can be purchased as a wife by some rich Saudi and the second without hijab that can train Muslim "youth" in the art of gang rape.

For the many resistant minded readers might I suggest the following poster than can be put up on lamp posts and trees in your own neighbourhood.

First, find a cute dog photo and place the following advertisement:
"Lost, a sweet little Scottish Terrier last seen on Friday night. This cute little dog goes by the name of Mohammed. If anyone locates my Mo, please send an email to mohammedlost@hotmail.com. $50 dollar reward."

The pitiful childness of Islamic thinking that is on display for all of the civilized world to see never stops amazing me.

Killing over cartoons, killing over the treatment of a book (Quran),killing over any costrued blasphemy, killing over becoming an apostate, killing over family honor, killing over being an unbeliever, or infidel and hopfully not killing over a childs teddy bear that is actually suppose to bring warmth and comfort to a child.

But of course that is not the real legacy of Mohmmed. Mohammed the pedophile, mohammed the murderer of innocent men and women, mohammed the inslaver of women and children,Mohammed the robber of Meccan Caravans through Medina.

Actually you honor Mohammed way to well to give a childs teddy bear his name.

Because no real God would ever stoop to calling Mohammed a true disciple of his.

Yo; I would rather share my time with Judas of Iscariat.

What's wrong with dogs, donkeys, pigs, teddy bears, or any other domesticated animal being named Muhammad, Osama, or Habib for that matter?

Posted by: Prickzilla [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 26, 2007 5:59 PM

But she didn't pick the name....the muslim children did.

Are they not good muslims? Have their parents not taught them islam well?

It's the childrens fault...not hers. Hold the parents accountable.

Posted by: alaskan1000 [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 26, 2007 7:12 PM

The thing about this story is that they refer to 'Islam's prophet' (reporting this story on News24 they used the phrase 'Islam's prophet Mohammed'). If I had a penny for every time I sent the BBC an email asking them to stop referring to 'the Prophet Mohammed', I'd be a rich man ( in fact I would have got as far as the purchase price of a chocolate bar when I gave up - but if I'd stuck to my guns....).Perhaps we are finally seeing a slow turn of the worm.

What a bunch of idiots. But at least they didn't demand 100 lashes for the kids who voted for this name. Yet.

The old Westeners would call the Muslims; Mohammedans. They could see through the mumbo-jumbo that true object of Muslim worship is the pedophile himself. His name, the way he farted, his stupid idiosyncracies these are sacred to the Muslim idolators. I hope the lady gets home safe and spare us teary interview where she would tell us that not all Muslims are raving loons.

A British school teacher has been arrested in Sudan accused of insulting Islam's Prophet, after she allowed her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad.
........
. . . Ms Gibbons' punishment could be up to six months in jail, 40 lashes or a fine.
.................................

Shades of "Mohammed Cat". I am sure Ms. Gibbons is entirely well-meaning, and just as culturally sensitive as could be. The exercize set for the children with the teddy bear sounds very touchy-feely.

I suppose we should be glad they are not threatening the children with forty lashes--just the "wealthy "Kaffir.

I think they're hoping to impose a nice, big fine (jizya). It seems the Bulgarian nurses were finally released from Libya after money was ponied up in a payoff.

Shiva has more at his site, and it includes this unintentionally hillarious line:

"It is seen as an insult to Islam to attempt to make an image of the Prophet Muhammed"

This in reference to a *teddy bear*. The woman's poor grown children back in civilized Britain declined to comment on this grotesque and absurd case, because "they do not want to say anything and aggravate the situation over there".

No, you mustn't inflame them further.

The African islamic psychos are often more deranged than their Arab counterparts. I guess that's due in part to their inferiority complex after years of enslavement by Arabs, and an overwhelming need to show the evil Western white world how strong and tough they are. Imprisoning a white European teacher on a mission of mercy should do the trick.

There are millions of psychotic, terrorist Muhammads running loose in the world but I almost forgot, those are the good guys. A stuffed teddy bear is an evil symbol of the West; how dare this blasphemous icon of corruption be used to ridicule the blessed prophet. Muslims are absolutely insane.

Posted by: Susanp [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 26, 2007 11:49 PM

I just read the BBC report. Its insane that a helpless woman is at the mercy of the Mohammedan wolves. In days past the British would have known what to do; instead of protesting that the teacher meant no harm why not tell them to stuff their greviance theater? There are tripwires like the mohammed teddy bear all over the place. To avoid getting entangled it is best to keep the Mohammedans at arms length.

"A British school teacher has been arrested in Sudan accused of insulting Islam's Prophet, after she allowed her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad"

.....I would have felt good about small children naming a cuddly, loveable teddy bear after me...it shows the children love me enough to honor me with something they love...the only thing Mohammad gives the children is forced devotion to his image....he must have been a real self centered narcissic moron.....

....Allah hates Muslims....he gives them poverty, misery, and death....

If naming a teddy bear Mohammed is such an insult to islam, why do 90% of the muslim world name their male children Mohammed or some version of it? I do not get it. Why is one an insult and one not? Is this another one of those "diversity" issues that I will never get?

Posted by: HereticInfidel [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 27, 2007 7:24 AM

"If naming a teddy bear Mohammed is such an insult to islam, why do 90% of the muslim world name their male children Mohammed or some version of it? I do not get it." Posted by: HereticInfidel

It's because Muslims hate animals in general, and also because representations of animals, even cute cuddly teddy bears, are seen as idolatrous. Naming boys after the prophet is seen as respectful; naming an animal after him, if one understood anything at all about Islam, would be seen as the ultimate blasphemy. I am surprised this teacher was so naive, but obviously her heart is in the right place and I wish her the best. Hopefully the authorities will be convinced that she meant no malice and the worst that will happen is she will be sent home.

Personally I think that naming a teddy bear Mohammed is an insult to teddy bears, but that's just me...

I just sent off a letter to the Sudan Embassy in the UK. I did the best I could, writing the following, in diplomatic language:

Esteemed Sirs:

As a citizen of the United States, it has come to my attention that a citizen of the United Kingdom, Ms. Gillian Gibbons, has inadvertently been arrested by the government of Sudan. See the following link:

Muhammad' teddy teacher arrested
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/7112929.stm

I am aware you have many other problems, but I strongly protest your government's treatment of this teacher. It is obvious she has made a grave error, unknowingly.

This woman went to Sudan with her heart in her hands intending to help others and filled with good intentions, and she was not aware of what she did, obviously, being ignorant of religious laws.

In view of this, I believe it is only right that the government of Sudan, do everything in their power to release Ms. Gillian Gibbons and have her extradited back to her country, the United Kingdom.

For the government of Sudan to allow this injustice to continue and allow her sentence to be carried out, would be a travesty of justice and compassion, as well as, bringing a serious breech in the good relations between the People of the United Kingdom, the United States, and indeed, the people in the rest of the world.

Trusting the government of Sudan will handle this situation in the correct manner, I remain,

Very truly yours,

I find it difficult to take seriously muslims who consider naming a teddy bear Mohammed idolatrous. It just sounds like another excuse to be violent and commit atrocious acts in the name of religion. Kind of like Orwell's Thought Police, they seek to punish anyone that they assume is thinking thoughts of which they do not approve. They probably think it is a good way to keep us infidels in line. Too bad it does not seem to be working.

Posted by: champ [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 27, 2007 3:03 PM

I would find the muslim's outrage more credible if it were an actual animal and not a cloth reproduction of one. I think that this is just an excuse to inflict a barbaric indignity on a citizen of a country they don't like. It seems like blowback for the British criticism of the Sudanese government's policy of allowing genocide to occur within it's borders.

Posted by: HereticInfidel [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 28, 2007 7:31 AM

What the hell was a Christian run school doing teaching Muslim students? Evangelicals getting themselves in trouble again. She was asking for it. These countries do not like evangelicals. If you do not want trouble do not go to a Muslim country with intentions to spread your religion.
I don't agree with this law but she knew where she was going and what could happen. Would any of you go to a country like Sudan? Why not? Duh, thats why you stay out.

Posted by: hehe [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 29, 2007 11:20 AM

How dare those evangelicals try to convert people by friendly persuasion rather than forcing conversions on pain of death like muslims do. How uncivilized of those damn christians.
