The New York Times story from a few days ago on the people who were burned to death inside a church in Kenya blames it all on tribal warfare. But there may be other factors involved also.
"Mob Sets Kenya Church on Fire, Killing Dozens," by Jeffrey Gettleman for The New York Times:
NAIROBI, Kenya — Dozens of people seeking refuge in a church in Kenya were burned to death by a mob on Tuesday in an explosion of ethnic violence that is threatening to engulf this country, which until last week was one of the most stable in Africa.[...]
Government officials said Tuesday that they would crack down on anyone who threatened law and order, and they banned political rallies. Meanwhile, Raila Odinga, the opposition leader who lost the election, has vowed to hold a million-person march on Thursday, which many Kenyans fear could become a bloodbath.
[...]
On Monday night, several hundred Kikuyus barricaded themselves inside the Kenya Assemblies of God church in Kiambaa, a small village near the town of Eldoret. The next morning, a rowdy mob showed up.
According to witnesses, the mob was mostly Kalenjins, Luhyas and Luos, Mr. Odinga’s tribe, which makes up about 13 percent of the population. They overran Kikuyu guards in front of the church and then pulled out cans of gasoline. There were no police officers around, witnesses said, and no water to put the fire out.
Most people escaped. But in addition to those killed, dozens were hospitalized with severe burns. Witnesses said most of the people hiding inside had been women and children.
The Eldoret area has become a killing zone. Residents say dozens of Kikuyus have been hacked to death, including four who were beheaded on Monday.
In Nairobi, a much-feared Kikuyu street gang called the Mungiki seems to be taking revenge. According to residents in a Luo area, the Mungiki, who are said to take an oath in which they drink human blood, were sweeping through the slums and killing Luos.
The government is now blaming Mr. Odinga for the violence.
That they are blaming Odinga is significant. Here is some background, courtesy Jihad Watch reader JS:
1. Kenyan Christians could be subjected to Sharia law
2. Raila Odinga, the current frontrunner in the upcoming presidential election in Kenya, has promised that he will implement strict Islamic Sharia law if he receives the Muslim vote in the country and is elected president.
3. 30 Muslims arrested in Kenya for arms smuggling
4. Muslim supporters want Muslim politician to counter Christian evangelism in northern Kenya. "The African Front," by Joshua Hammer in the New York Times, December 23, 2007:
He supported Kura's claim that Harugura was being financed by Somalis from the Northeastern Province. "They believe that Harugura is the person to bring back the Rendille tribe from Christianity," Lesiantam said. "And he has promised that during the first five years, he will have mosques built in every urban center we have in this constituency."
5. Islamic charities in Kenya are providing Al-Qaeda with operating funds. "Al Qaeda Skimming Charity Money: U.S., Saudi Crackdown Has Largely Failed To Stop Money Flow," from CBS News, June 7, 2004.

On Monday night, several hundred Kikuyus barricaded themselves inside the Kenya Assemblies of God church in Kiambaa, a small village near the town of Eldoret. The next morning, a rowdy mob showed up.
I supplied a link a few days ago pointing out that this had overtones of islam.
I find it strange that the Kikuyus where seeking refuge in a church
NAIROBI, Kenya, June 20 — These days Charity Bokindo, the district commissioner of Nairobi North, is taking no chances.
Wherever she goes, she carries not one but two pistols, and she always travels with armed guards.
“The Mungiki,” she whispered, “they threatened to circumcise me.”...
... Addressing a press conference at Mombasa's Sakina Mosque, Sheikh Shee said his council had now accepted them as Muslims. There were chants of "Taqbir, Allah Akbar" when the announcement was made.
The Mungiki leaders, who wore Kanzu and white caps, thanked Muslims for accepting them. They said the harassment of Mungiki members would now be seen as an insult to Muslims.

Fury At Attacks Against Women
The Nation (Nairobi), 24 October 2000
Nairobi - Various institutions and individuals yesterday strenuously condemned attacks and harassment meted out on women by members of the Mungiki sect in Nairobi at the weekend.
The sect members turned rowdy after police barred them from holding prayers on the Kayole Estate on Sunday. They vented their anger on women passersby dressed in trousers.
Yesterday, the National Convention Executive Council, the Federation of Women Lawyers and the Kenya Women's Political Caucus condemned the thuggery as shameful and shocking, and called for the arrest of those involved in the attack.
The NCEC also condemned Mungiki's attacks against some sections of the Christian Church and the Freemasons...
Sect Leader Scoffs At Expulsion Threat
By Tervil Okoko, Panafrican News Agency, 30 December 2000
Nairobi, Kenya - The leadership of a Kenyan renegade Islamic "Mungiki" group has dismissed threats by Muslim clerics to expel the group from the faith.
"This (Islam) is a religion and not a political party where one is asked to quit. No one can send a person packing in a religion of God. Let all of us be judged by our deeds and not individuals who have mistaken religion as a private property,"

Isn't it interesting how nothing ever has anything to do with Islam? Nothing. Ever. Nothing in the world, unless it's good, ever has anything to do with Islam!
No, YOU "chill out," muslim.

I think the press are going to treat the situation in Kenya the way they did that of the former Yugoslavia. They will only mention ethnicities and never mention religion. A form of kitman.
It took me years to figure out what was going on in the Balkans as they press obfuscated it.

Wikipedia lists Raila Odinga, the leader whose election dispute led to the rioting and whose followers burned the church, as an "Anglican." However, there is an interesting article on the web which indicates that at one point he fled from Kenya to Uganda and then traveled from Uganda to Norway under the name of "Haji Omar" and sought asylum in Norway.
See this web address, or cut and paste it into your browser:
http://www.eastandard.net/archives/sunday/hm_news/news.php?articleid=1143955395&date=19/07/2006
"Travelling under different names, sometimes dressed as a priest and other times as a Sheikh, Raila staged a dramatic escape from Kenya by boat at night, through Lake Victoria to Uganda then to Norway, to avoid arrest just before a 1991 Forum for Restoration of Democracy rally at Kamukunji, Nairobi.
That day, Raila was introduced to Kisumu and Ugenya as Father Augustine from Machakos, complete with a priest’s robe.
He arrived in Uganda under the name of Joseph Ojiwa Wadeya. By the time he was leaving Uganda for Norway, his name had changed to Haji Omar, going to Mecca on pilgrimage, complete with a kanzu and a fez."
Now, Odinga in this election is once again claiming to be a Christian who simply wants fair treatment for Muslims. And now we hear he has some sort of accommodation with Muslims to promote Sharia law in Kenya. All of this raises a fair question of what exactly is Odinga, and would he conceal his true religious identity in order to win an election? The ultimate question I have is how far the Muslim doctrine of taquiya goes, and would it encompass that kind of deception?
Perhaps Hugh or Robert could answer this. Would a Muslim run for political office claiming to be a Christian in order to advance the cause of Islam? Is there any precedent for this? Did Mohammed himself practice deception about his religious beliefs until he was strong enough to take down those who opposed him? Did the people of Medina who invited him into their community to serve as a neutral arbitrator while his movement was still weak expect him to take over and kill his opponents?
I guess this also ties in with continuing concerns that if a wolf can run for office in sheep's clothing there, that it could also happen anywhere.

Couldn't help but notice..
"Barak Obama had his picture taken with Odinga. This could come back to bite him."
"The blogger Atlas Shrugs provides further links to Obama as well as links to images of the signed 'secret' Memorandum of Understanding here"
It is also known that Mr. Obama "sounds like Eldridge Cleaver" when speaking to an all-black audience.. And he sounds like June Cleaver when speaking to those hon.. I mean whites. My bad.
I say we don't make much noise about all of this. For now. Let him take Hitlery apart first.
Anything - hopefully not the Huxta or McCain - is better than either Obama or Hitlery.
Obama is easier to beat in the General election so let's let sleeping dogs lie till the time is ready for "revelations" about Mr. Obama's true agenda.

Allah Schmallah: I disagree that we should let sleeping dogs lie in regard to the allegations tying Odinga with Obama.
Allegations that Obama's father and Obama himself have close ties with the Odinga family need to be investigated and brought out now, while people are still forming their opinions on Obama. Obama is a nearly sure thing to be nominated for either the presidency or vice-presidency of this country as things stand now, and the Democrats seem to have the inside track on winning the general election, as indicated by the numbers of Democrats and Republicans attending the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary.
Concerns about Obama's ties to and public support of Odinga, a Kenyan politician who ran as a Christian but had signed a secret pact to institute Sharia law in Kenya are an important reflection on who we would get with Obama, who is for the most part a charismatic unknown at present. If not addressed now, such concerns will not likely be addressed by the main stream media after his nomination.
The Obama-Odinga connection needs to be aggressively investigated and fact-checked NOW, and then kept in the spotlight (in the blogosphere at the very least) if true.
I understand that Odinga may have even named his son after Fidel Castro, thereby further showing his anti-Western credentials. After the election, his supporters burned a church with people in it, and Odinga responded by calling for more civil disorder in the form of a million man march. This is the guy Obama was supporting during the election in Kenya? And, I have not heard Obama denounce Odinga yet. At the very least this reflects badly on Obama's judgment.
Even if the main stream media or a political opponent brought these allegations up at the last minute, after the nomination, the lateness of the allegations would result in their being discounted by an electorate which does not want its illusions of the perfect candidate punctured.
