This is not the first time this has happened, and it is the inevitable result of asking Islamic groups to vet public school textbooks. The textbook manufacturers don't know the pedigrees of the Islamic groups they're dealing with, and they don't know enough actual history themselves to know that what they're being given is heavily biased proselytizing and apologetics, not an honest record.
"Textbook: Islamic 'jihad' means doing good works," by Bob Unruh for WorldNetDaily.com (thanks to all who sent this in):
An Islamic "jihad" is an effort by Muslims to convince "others to take up worthy causes, such as funding medical research," according to a textbook that is being used for junior high age students in California and other states. And even at its most violent, "jihad" simply is Muslims fighting "to protect themselves from those who would do them harm," says the "History Alive! The Medieval World and Beyond" book published by Teachers' Curriculum Institute.
But a parent whose child has been handed the text in a Sacramento district is accusing the publisher of a pro-Muslim bias to the point that Islamic theology has been incorporated into the public school teachings.
"It makes an attempt to seem like an egalitarian world history book, but on closer inspection you find that seven (not all are titled so) of the chapters deal with Islam or Muslim subjects," wrote the parent, whose name was being withheld, in a letter to WND.
Sacramento's students are being taught "jihad" is an effort to convince "others to take up worthy causes."
"The upsetting part is not only do they go into the history (which would be acceptable) but also the teaching of Islam," she said. "This book does not really go into Christianity or the teachings of Christ, nor does it address religious doctrine elsewhere to the degree it does Islam."
She said the book's one page referencing Jews "is only to convey that they were tortured by Crusaders to get them to convert to 'Christianity.' (It fails to mention that the biggest persecutors of Jews throughout history and still today are Arab Muslims). It gives four other one-liner references to the Jews being blamed for the plagues and problems in the land. It does not talk about the Jews as making a significant impact on the culture at large."
"How can the writers of this text get away with this?" she asked.
[...]
One of those experts who contributed to the text, according to the American Textbook Council, which released a scathing indictment of the project, is Ayad Al-Qazzaz.
"Al-Qazzaz is a Muslim apologist, a frequent speaker in Northern California school districts promoting Islam and Arab causes," the ATC review said. "Al-Qazzaz also co-wrote AWAIR's 'Arab World Notebook.' AWAIR stands for Arab World and Islamic Resources, an opaque, proselytizing 'non-profit organization' that conducts teacher workshops and sells supplementary materials to schools."
There is much more. Read it all.

"..."This book does not really go into Christianity or the teachings of Christ.....,"
.....If it did, the ACLU, the teachers unions, the dhimmicrats, Louis Farrakhan, Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, moveon.org, Media Matters, and so many others would really decry the book and its publishers of being guilty of forcing Christianty into the mushbrains of the children....
...things have really gone downhill, especially since 1961 (i believe) when prayer was removed from the schools....
....now it seems new prayers are being slowly forced into the schools...Islamic prayer.....
....save civilization...ban Muslim Immigration...

Unlike the greetings "Aloha" or "Shalom" which yield dual and contradicting meanings depending on context - either as hello or farewell or peace be with you, Islam is dangerously different with it's own dualistic interpretations.
Islamic "jihad" is an effort by Muslims to convince "others to take up worthy causes, such as funding medical research,"
and
And even at its most violent, "jihad" simply is Muslims fighting "to protect themselves from those who would do them harm,"
In light of daily doses of jihad reported around the globe, how can anyone - anywhere - believe that first statement? Is there even one example, predating this article of a publication identifying such medical research by muslims labeled as jihad?
As with everything else, Islam conceives it's own duplicitous definitions simply as a matter of convenience.
Our first clue about the dualism is in the Koran, which is actually two books, the Koran of Mecca (early) and the Koran of Medina (later). The insight into the logic of the Koran comes from the large numbers of contradictions in it. On the surface, Islam resolves these contradictions by resorting to “abrogation”. This means that the verse written later supersedes the earlier verse. But in fact, since the Koran is considered by Muslims to be the perfect word of Allah, both verses are sacred and true. The later verse is “better,” but the earlier verse cannot be wrong since Allah is perfect. This is the foundation of dualism. Both verses are “right.” Both sides of the contradiction are true in dualistic logic. The circumstances govern which verse is used.
Consider this propaganda as taqiyya trash.

Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt, former Senior Policy Advisor in the U.S. Department of Education, blew the whistle in the `80s on government activities withheld from the public. She wrote a book worth exploring, "The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America" . . .available free online here
It follows that this is just the next phase of deliberate dumbing down of America (video discusses early examples of sensitivity training in education)
The American Textbook Council site has some dated but relevant information as well including a report which specifically addresses this issue.
Posted by: justamomof4Islam and TextbooksSince 2003, several reports have documented bias and evasions in world history textbooks. Textbooks misrepresent Islam past and present, critics agree. They contain fallacies and untruths about jihad, sharia, slavery, status of Muslim women, terrorism, and international security. These reviews independently reach the same conclusions. Most conspicuously, history textbooks whitewash the meaning of jihad.

When it comes to textbooks, as California goes so goes the entire rest of the nation. California & Texas have the largest number of public school students so textbook publishers have long published almost entirely with an eye to those two specific markets.

Just more da'wa in public schools. The Muslim-led ACLU is very much in favor of this, along with the 'progressive' Left. Every time this comes up I like to contrast it with Iraq or Afghanistan, where we're not teaching modern secular values but theocracy, jihad, and sharia - just like our own public schools!

Teacher, why does their god require subterfuge to establish his kingdom on earth? Teacher, if jihad means personal struggle, why do all one hundred scholarly haddiths say it means war on the infidel? Teacher, doesn't the koran say that muslims are to fight until they establish allah as the only deity, and is so, why does allah require fighting to establish himself? Teacher, why would allah give you a short temporary life with poor guidance about what he requires only to then punish you for eternity for not doing exactly what he requires including waking up in the middle of the night to pray to him or else? Teacher, why did their god pick an arabian to bring his law to for all time for all eternity?

This is a process that has become common: the self loathing of our own society, history, etc.
In Europe, many believe that it is a consequence of colonialism. Others - more accurately, perhaps - assert that it is a new form of cultural colonialism (I will get to this later in the post).
America on the other hand, does not have a clear history as a colonizer in the 19th century victorian sense (even though the events that led to the anexation of Hawaii and to the Spanish-American war might suggest otherwise), as the country "chose" a much lighter form to influence nations and attract them to the American sphere of influence. The Phillipines for instance, probably have a much better impression of the American "administration" of the country, than of their past that lasted four centuries as a colony of the Spanish Crown. America does have - on the other hand - a society deeply divided by race (black vs white) and in some cases by the original culture of the immigrants (Dutch-English vs Irish or Italians in the XIX century American society). This is not to be taken as criticism, the fact is that with the exception of Brazil, no other country received such a diverse and massive population of immigrants. Brazil has the exact same problems regarding racism that America has, but the population chose hipocrisy instead of confrontation (one rarely gets to see mixed race people in Brazilian televisions, and the first thing a mixed brazilian does to reaffirm economic power is to get himself a European looking Brazilian wife).
Back to my original point, we have grown accostumed to historical revisionism, where our history wasn't as glorious as the one of the defeated nations.
Mel Gibson was accused of xenophobia for "Apocalypto", even though the picture describes something that happened in the Incan and Aztec societies for centuries and that was only stopped with the arrival of Christianity. His only major mistake was to mix up Mayan history with the one of the Aztecs (the Mayans had abandoned their great cities long before the arrival of Hernan Cortés).
The imagery of the brutal ignorant European vs the hippie looking, peaceful native, is a big crock of you know what. Not that the medieval Europeans weren't often brutal - they were -, but the natives they met were often just as brutal as they were, not only to the newly arrived Europeans, but particularly to their rival native American tribes.
Have you ever heard of the Tlaxcalans? The Tlaxcalans were a tributary tribe of the Mexica (aka the Aztecs). The Mexica treated the Tlaxcalans so bad, that when Cortés arrived, the Tlaxcalans joined Cortés and inflated his army of a couple of hundreds to a massive army of almost 100,000 (recent findings show that more than 80% of the casualties the Conquistadores inflicted upon the Indians, were made by their native allies). After the conquest, the Tlaxcalans ruled the Aztec empire together with the Spaniards (and married their daughters to them) for over 100 years.
In North America, the Iroquois and the Huron were butchering each other, until the French (allied to the Huron) destroyed the Iroquois capital. In the early XVII century, Jean the Brebeuf, a French Jesuit missionary and a staunch protector of Native Americans, was burned at the stake by the Iroquois.
I am not turning native americans (or anyone else, for that matter) into demons, but the idea that everything was fine and dandy until the European settlers arrived is a lie, even from an ecological point of view (entire species were extinct as a direct result of native american over-hunting - this happened in North, Central and South America).
Now, given this reality, why do we - and only we, because I only see this phenomenon in western countries - hate ourselves so much?
The answer is, because we are arrogant to the point of thinking that we are so superior, that only we are subject to criticism. "Iranians stone homosexuals? Its tradition..."; "That black guy from Grey's Anatomy called a fellow actor a "fag"? Crucify him!!!"
So, as I said earlier, the people that act like this (I am not one of them), are just as bad as the people that made the "White Man's burden" into a reality in their daily lives. In fact, they are probably worse, since the victorian settlers simply didn't know any better.
So the next time you hear someone from the far-left calling you a racist for being against mass immigration, or an imperialist because you have pride in your country, simply call him a crypto-neo-colonialist because that is what he is.

Five pillars of Islam' taught in public school

Another school has been "teaching" Islam by having students study and learn Muslim prayers and dress as Muslims, and a lawyer who argued a previous dispute over this issue to the U.S. Supreme Court said such methodologies wouldn't "last 10 seconds" if it were Christianity being taught.
"Would it have been 'just cultural education' if students were in simulated baptisms, wearing a crucifix, having taken the name of St. John and with praise banners saying 'Praise be to Jesus Christ' on classroom walls?" asked Edward White III, of the Thomas More Law Center.
His comments came after a new protest arose in Nyssa, Ore., where one parent raised objections when the Islamic teachings came to light. The district there, according to Supt. Don Grotting, is teaching a chapter in a history textbook "Journey Across Time" that talks about "how civilization has developed and some of the particular aspects of Islam."
"We teach out of the book, and there are some supplemental class activities," he told WND. "The kids do some skits, they could bring a food from the region, you could build a prop that would have depicted (something) maybe during that time period.
"If you wanted to you could dress up (as a Muslim) for extra credit," he said.
He said students also learned about the climate of the Middle East, the food and everyday activities of Islam, and the geography and the lay of the land.
Still another assignment was to learn the "five pillars" of Islam, study Ramadan and listen to guest speakers including an American Muslim who arrived dressed in her religious costume to talk to the kids about her Quran.
"She relayed to the kids, if you're a Christian you have your Bible, this is our Quran," Grotting said.
(Story continues below)
Parent Kendalee Garner, however, objected to having her son being taught Islam and also to the time the public school system spends on the subject.
She told WND that her 13-year-old son is being "indoctrinated that Islam is a religion of peace, and being dressed up as a Muslim, being taught prayers, and scriptures out of the Quran."
"I just don't understand the ban on Christianity but Islam has free rein," she said.
She said the guest speakers and skits and reports were wrong, but what set her off was a class in which students in all three social studies classes dressed in traditional Islamic outfits.
"The only reason I knew about it was because my son told me about it," she said. "They sent him to the library instead of stopping what they were doing. I'm sure people would be outraged if they dressed up as the pope."
That was White's point exactly.
If that's how teaching about religions is done, he said, "then teach all religions in the same way, Christianity, Judaism. Have the kids study Native American religions, do the dance, smoke the pipe. Have the kids dress up as priests and hear confession."
He said when he suggests that, school managers and even judges get that "panic-stricken" look.
He knows because he argued the same dispute up to the U.S. Supreme Court after complaints of similar teachings in the Byron Union School District in California.
As WND has reported that case was almost a duplicate. Teachers were having students memorize Islamic prayers, wear Islamic dress and learn to behave as a Muslim under the guise of studying history.
Some parents objected and their resulting lawsuit was turned back by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals where the opinion called it "cultural education."
The U.S. Supreme Court last week declined to intervene, but lawyers note that's not necessarily an endorsement of the court; it just means the justices will not review the dispute at this point.
White said he actually challenged the 9th Circuit to write its instructions in a detailed opinion, so schools would know exactly what's required. However, he said the court brushed him off with a three-paragraph ruling that essentially boils down to one district judge saying it's okay in one school district.
"Why is it okay to teach Islam? Unless there's an exception in the Establishment Clause, which says you cannot teach religion in schools unless it's Islam," he said. "I haven't seen it."
Grotting said the course has been taught for several years, and comes mandated by the state under a set of required standards – called Benchmark 3 – that students must reach each year.
Grotting acknowledged to WND that textbooks do "take a slant" on some issues, because publishers "are wanting to sell a textbook that is meeting the needs of the state and federal mandates."
"I believe we're not here to promote or advocate either religion or politics," social studies teacher Jim Casad told the Ontario, Ore., Argus Observer. "However, we do have an obligation to inform students of what is going on in our world today and how history and culture have affected that world."
In the California case, school officials also blamed the "possible cant" of the textbook and said the Islamic studies were being taught because of state mandates.
"It is imperative that our instruction includes an understanding of and insight into all cultures and a tolerance for the diversity found in the world," said Peggy Green, the Byron Union School District superintendent, at that time.
A review online of information from the text shows that it teaches Christianity spread because "it gave meaning to peoples' lives, appealed to their emotions and promised happiness after death."
Its description also focuses on Christians' conflicts with Rome (when they were fed to lions), and splits between Christians following Roman teachings and those following the teachings of Constantine.
However, the article praises how the Muslims founded the system for banking, created important centers for learning, government and the arts, how they ran "government, society and business" and made valuable contributions in math, science and the arts.
The text also credits Muslims with inventing algebra and chemistry as well as creating beautiful buildings, citing the Taj Mahal, although the text does not mention that that is a tomb.
There's also no mention of the Quranic instruction that Muslims must behead infidels, or nonbelievers.
One blogger said Christians should think strategically on such issues.
"Cases like this present Christians with a golden opportunity to introduce elements of religious teaching back into the state curriculum by using the left's double standard towards Islam against it," said one commentator. "Now that this case is on the books in the Ninth Circuit as precedent, expect Christian immersion classes to follow."

Students, and parents, and the larger public, must be vigilant, and monitor textbooks, and for that matter classes that manufacture a false feelgood history, at the behest of smiling accommodators on school boards, who prefer to meet, or even anticipate, aggressive Muslim demands that are everywhere being organized to change curricula in order to make Islam a part of it, and the presentation of Islam - minus mention of Jihad in its well-accepted historical sense, and minus mention of the institution of the dhimmi, and minus mention of Islamic conquest and subjugation of non-Muslims, and minus everyuthing save, possibly, the Shehada, zakat, salat, Ramadan, and the hajj, with just possibly a bit about "the three abrahamic faiths" by way of obfuscating smokescreen to soothe and to lull.
There are many who have an emotional stake in such doubtful propositions as "all religions want/teach/stand for the same thing." They don't. And even the word "religion," as commonly understood in the Western world, is insufficient to describe the Total Belief-System of Islam.

"Students, and parents, and the larger public, must be vigilant, and monitor textbooks, and for that matter classes that manufacture a false feelgood history"
Actually, most history textbooks in grade schools, high schools and colleges lather on thickly a "feelbad" history about the evils of the West: the Crusades, Inquisition, "Dark Ages", witch-burnings, oppression of scientists (Galileo), Western Imperialism, Western enslavement of blacks, American "genocide" of American Indians, the beleaguered women's movement (always looking at the story from a "glass half empty" perspective); and I'm just listing a few. In Western schools, there's precious little "feelGOOD" history about the West.
In the West, we have developed a thriving industry of pathological, excessive self-criticism. And it will be a miracle if this pathology of ours is NOT going to result in the mass-murder of millions of us in the coming decades.

This book has popped up regularly on Jihadwatch. The last time, to my knowledge, back in November 2007. That time it was in a Houston, Texas elementary school:
http://www.jihadwatch.org/dhimmiwatch/archives/018643.php
The WorldDailyNet.com article in the main story mentions Janie White, a Scottsdale AZ parent, whose objection to the book led to a quite stunning anti-jihad victory in her local school district. Apologies for reposting my posting to the above thread, but it shows what can be achieved:
"THIS CAN BE FOUGHT SUCCESSFULLY- IT HAS BEEN BEFORE
Sorry for the caps, but this isn't the first time that this book has provoked controversy.
Back in 2005, an article on Daniel Pipes website about Islamic indoctrination in the public school system received a comment from Janie White, a mother in Scottsdale, Arizona.
http://www.danielpipes.org/comments/20546
She was concerned at the Islamic bias present in History Alive!, which had replaced the previous textbook that her child had been issued for social studies.
Pipes was so impressed with her reasoned and well-written comment that he urged her to publish it. She did, and it made an immediate impact.
It received thousands of hits, more in fact than any previous item on Pipes' site. Frontpage and LGF ran with it, and the local press picked it up. (see story below)
http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/439
Pamela Geller’s old blog even featured an ass-kicking letter template from Solomon at Solomonia.com for parents wishing to complain over its anti-Israel bias.
Result? Just over a month after Janie White's posting, Scottsdale Unified School District pulled History Alive! (see story below)
http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/39120
This shows that proactive parents, with a little help from the blogging community, CAN put a stop to the spreading of pro-Islamic propaganda in schools."
As a footnote: As this book is clearly causing such consternation to parents across the US, can not something be done nationally - ie through a public awareness campaign and mass pressure - to get it pulled or its text radically altered?

"The upsetting part is not only do they go into the history (which would be acceptable) but also the teaching of Islam"
-- the view of the parent who complained
That is not the main problem.
The main problem is that the presentation of Islam is false, as is clear from this:
"An Islamic "jihad" is an effort by Muslims to convince "others to take up worthy causes, such as funding medical research."
This is nonsense.

From interestinconundrum:
Thanks poetess. Some days I get a little down.
interestin, it may seem like nothing is happening, but trust me - every day more people are waking up to what is taking place. Grassroots opinion is swaying our way. Forget about what GW and Condi are doing or not doing. Sure, some politicians are genuinely dhimmi asshats, but much of what leaders do is realpolitik, unfortunately.
Maybe you should reassess your expectations? Focus on what can realistically be achieved. Ignore some of the fantasist comments you'll find on CJ websites - no Govt is about to expel Muslims en masse, or "declare war on Islam" (how exactly?) or any of the other suggestions regularly put forward by the more excitable imaginations out there.
Some of the suggestions made by posters in this thread are worth pursuing though. Writing school officials, text book suppliers etc. Investigate, lobby, campaign. Grassroots pro-activism can work - see the Daniel Pipes link I posted. If you’re still doubtful, think what a handful of stiff-necked Americans helped bring about via a jape in Boston harbour a few centuries back.
If you’re feeling down, then take a break from the CJ scene. Read a few good books. If your anti-jihad morale needs a boost, then try The Religion by Tim Willocks. Sure, it sounds like some ghastly evangelical tome, but it’s a terrific novel about the Knights Hospitallers and the Siege of Malta in 1565. Great story, and excellent historical detail too. Look up Jean de la Valette - now there was an anti-dhimmi for all time.
Chin up, old bean! And as for your brother, I suggest you try the traditional method of fraternal persuasion - noogies and Indian burns until his thinking comes around.

What category does arson fall in,
Lesser Jihad or Greater Jihad.
Let the students do a paper on
"how I survived local Jihad".

"Once upon a time, there were irrelevant people living in inconsequential places, whose only purpose was to be conquered by the Prophet who brought them the most noble Qur'an, the beautiful Arabic language, and the knowledge of Allah. Everything that came before the Magnanimous Most Perfect Person and His Religion does not matter, and needs no further discussion.
The End

All the best fairy tales start that way...
That allah really IS insecure. So needy, so vicious, so quick to take life.
You'll wake up one day to what your cult really is, I hope.
Peace,

I see that you retain the post from your email flamer, Darcy from 1/16/08, who triggered a continuing wave of vituperative attacks from his fellow bloggers (including one who hopes Gil Sewall of the ATC will go to eternal Hell. Nice folks blogging here) Still, you have not posted mine. Why?

Teachers were having students memorize Islamic prayers, wear Islamic dress and learn to behave as a Muslim under the guise of studying history.

When this came out the first time this line really bothered me.
If the prayer is the one that you say three times and you are converted, what is it called? Shahada?
Anyway, if it is this prayer couldn't the parents bring a lawsuit based on forced conversion?
Wouldn't that be a lively court case?
Speaking of conversion do the people who inflate the numbers of Islamics in the Western world count our children that have unknowingly so converted?

....what is disgusting is that the parents are the same ones that agreed(demanded) to the removal of posted documents citing "THe Ten Commandments", "THe U.S. Constitution," and "The Bill of Rights"...THe parents complained when the football coach gathered the team for "a moment of prayer"....
...one single parent pulled her children out of school, electing to home school the tykes....good for her!...
....see what happens when you let the government and the school unions run your schools....disgusting...

I never thought I'd be for home-schooling. Which goes to show you, never assume anything.
And never endure harassment, people - "block sender" of very sick people, esp. lawyers, immediately. No one has to undergo continuing harassment in this country - continuing harassment. Key word - "continuing." Very sick.

Calidhimmis Dreamin
All their noses are brown and their lives are grey
They'll be going for a walk some Winter's day
Thinking their safe and warm 'cause their in L.A.
Calidhimmis dreamin' on such a Winter's day
Stopped into a mosque they pass along the way
They get down on their knees and pretend to pray
You know, the imam likes it cold - he knows they'll be blown away
Calidhimmis dreamin' on such a Winter's day

memo to DaveMate:
There are two UK-based anti-jihad websites that I know of. One is "GOD HELP BRITAIN" and the other is "Terror Tracker." Both are linked to this website.

Does anyone know what happened with the guy in Texas - his name was Jim Self - who opposed this back late last year? Did he win?
