Someone should highlight the absurdity of this by "demanding" equal "rights" in this area for polyandry (female polygamy). It would have an entertaining, Monty Python-esque flair to it (all it would need is Terry Gilliam and John Cleese in their "old lady" characters, similar to the ones in How to Irritate People).

The courts would have to grant it, or admit the government is kowtowing to one particular group out of fear. And then they might realize the slippery slope they're on, both with respect to inequality under the law (hopefully that still bothers some people nowadays), and the unending succession of accommodations demanded and received by Muslims in the West.

Responding to the pressure of the muslim lobby the government has been testing the ground for this for some time. Sympathetic broadcasts about polygamy have been put out on the BBC for at least 5 years.

I know of one educated muslim who openly married for the third time last year. Thanks to New Labours scrapping of restrictions on overseas marriages in 1997, 60% of muslims now bring in wives from Pakistan or Bangladesh so at least one of the three will probably be an illegal immigrant. If you expect the authorities to do anything about these cases do not hold your breath.

I am a Yank from New York City. I consider Winston Churchill to be the greatest leader of the 20th century and one of the great leaders of all time. In the USA, WIC (Women, Infants and Children) benefits go to mostly single mothers. Biological fathers have child support payments deducted from their paychecks (if they have jobs). American men don't get welfare benefits but may collect unemployment benefits for 6 months to 1 year.

It has been said that the US welfare system discourages marriage, which might lead to loss of government benefits. It sounds better to me than payments to fathers, who may neglect their wives and children. It is unbelievable that a government would reward polygamy with extra cash benefits!

As Brit I cringe at articles like these, I get angry and almost cry with frustration. What does get me crying though is when I read articles like this below. A breath test was taken but, as Mr Gibson had only had a sip of communion wine, it was negative. But because the pensioner refused to get out of his car, saying he had done nothing wrong, Mr Gibson claims the two officers grabbed an arm each and dragged him from his vehicle.
Pc Steven Cole told Medway magistrates' court that Mr Gibson had grabbed his thumb. "It hurt. He twisted it back and I noted down in my pocket notebook that I let out a yelp. There is no way else of describing it."
John Fitzgerald, prosecuting, said: "Mr Gibson's reaction was to push Pc Thomas McGregor in the chest with his left hand and walk back to his car."
The officers said that they were so traumatised by the OAP's actions they called for back-up before arresting him.
Mr Gibson was handcuffed and taken to a police station, where he was held for more than five hours, returning home at 5am on Christmas Day.
The case was adjourned until Jan 22.

It's much rarer than polygamy but it HAS happened in some societies.

I understand, for example, that in old-time Tibet it was quite usual for a woman to marry, say, three brothers.

(Perhaps, in a very harsh high alpine environment, the idea was that two or three men working hard had a better chance of scraping together enough resources to sustain just one woman plus babies, than either one guy on his own with one wife, or one poor guy trying to sustain a whole bunch of women and hordes of kids?).

Yeah. Are there any Tibetans in Britain? It would be interesting if there were - they could invoke this ancient custom and call the government's bluff.

Wasn't there a reform-minded muslim, somewhere, who got into terrible trouble after he or she called attention to the unfairness of men being able to have multiple wives, but the reverse not being true?

Time for every other non-Muslim faith community in Britain, Christians and Jews first, but also the other groups (Hindus, Sikhs, Confucians/ Taoists, Chinese Buddhists) who have - so far as I know - quietly dumped polygamy for some generations now and don't seem to be exactly hankering to get it back, to kick up a huge stink about this stupid ruling which 1. makes a mockery of ancient British law and custom concerning marriage and 2. gives Muslim polygamous men a totally unfair source of extra income, denied to everybody else.

Reading this, I could only think of the Somersett Case -- which ruled that slavery was not permitted in Britain (although it was still allowed in British colonies) and any slave brought to the UK by his owner would immediately become free. Does this "advancement" in British respect for other cultures reverse that decision, so that henceforth, someone who purchases a slave (in a country where slavery is legal) is hereby able to bring the slave to Britain?

But I see some good news in this. All Brits who want to be armed for the upcoming civil war may now purchase assault weapons (in countries where such purchases are legal) and take them back to Britain, right?

Why would the guy be getting ANY benefits anyway? If he is healthy enough to marry again he should be able to work. And if he isn't healthy, surely the wives could both work and he could care for their children.

Even The Hook was healthy enough to drag his mouth to the streets to give sermons. He was healthy enough to do that he should be healthy enough to do sales work. He was healthy and able bodied enough to father all those kids, how can he not manage to work? That goes for the rest of them. Why are those thousand on benefits anyway? And why isn't there a time limit?

No wonder they are willing to risk life and limb to get to England. Healthy enough to pass through all those other countries. Able to travel great distance to get there but not able to work. They seek asylum but don't mind traveling back to get another wife?

I think at this point we could just attach an electrical generator to Winston in his grave, and we'd have a renewable energy source to power all our cities for decades to come. This legislation is being brought in by a government which only 21.6% of the electorate voted for. Imagine what they would do if they had a majority.
