Hundreds of GTA Muslim men in polygamous marriages -- some with a harem of wives -- are receiving welfare and social benefits for each of their spouses, thanks to the city and province, Muslim leaders say.
Mumtaz Ali, president of the Canadian Society of Muslims, said wives in polygamous marriages are recognized as spouses under the Ontario Family Law Act, providing they were legally married under Muslim laws abroad.
"Polygamy is a regular part of life for many Muslims," Ali said yesterday. "Ontario recognizes religious marriages for Muslims and others."
He estimates "several hundred" GTA husbands in polygamous marriages are receiving benefits. Under Islamic law, a Muslim man is permitted to have up to four spouses.
However, city and provincial officials said legally a welfare applicant can claim only one spouse. Other adults living in the same household can apply for welfare independently.
The average recipient with a child can receive about $1,500 monthly, city officials said. [...]
In addressing the issue of polygamous marriages, the preamble to the Ontario Family Law Act states: "In the definition of 'spouse,' a reference to marriage includes a marriage that is actually or potentially polygamous, if it was celebrated in a jurisdiction whose system of law recognizes it as valid. R.S.O. 1990, c. F.3, s. 1 (2)."
"There are many people in the community who are taking advantage of this," Ali said. "This is a law and there's nothing wrong with it."
Immigration officials said yesterday that polygamous marriages aren't allowed in Canada, but that contradicts the provincial law.
"Canada is a very liberal-minded country," Ali said. "Canada is way ahead of Britain in this respect."
He said Britain recently began permitting husbands to collect benefits for each of their wives.
Yep.
The British government recently admitted that nearly a thousand men are living legally with multiple wives in Britain. Although the families are entitled to claim social security for each wife, the department for work and pensions said it has not counted how many are on benefits.
In Canada, Ali said, the man and his main wife and children enter Canada as landed immigrants. The other spouses are sponsored or arrive as visitors to join their husband to share one home.

If you, a Muslim, buy a family membership at the local health-club, will you, for the same price as an Infidel couple, obtain membership for yourself and two, three, four wives? And what if that health club balks? Or is it more likely that they will not balk, but give you the same special deal that city governments, provincial governments, and the national government of Canada all seem hell-bent on providing. And if polygamy is forbidden -- that is, if one cannot marry more than one wife at a time in Canada -- then why does the government of Canada allow the practice of polygamy within its borders? Why not keep out those who are polygamists? Let them decide if they would rather practice polygamy or have the great privilege of living in Canada? Or, here's another question. Why not base the choice of immigrants on realism, rather than on hope, and halt all Muslim migration altogether? Not possible? Why? Are Canadians not allowed to look around the world, to look at the example of Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy, Norway, Belgium, Sweden? Are they not allowed to judge for themselves whether or not Islam, or the Shari'a, are compatible with Canadian legal and political institutions? Are they not able, for themselves, to judge the truth or falsehood of the following statement:
"The large-scale presence of Muslims within Infidel lands has led to a situation, both for the indigenous Infidels and for non-Muslim immigrants, that is far more unpleasant, expensive, and physically dangerous than it would be without such a large-scale Muslim presence."
True, or false?
If true, what do you, an Infidel, intend to do about it in helping to fashion an immigration policy for your own country?

Short of forming my own political party (and winning the lottery!), I have made my opinions on the matter of Muslim immigration & Islamic supplication quite clear to all of my elected Representative and both Senators.
Alas, it continues to fall on deaf ears. We'll see what happens in a scant 11 months.
Else? Locked and loaded in small town America.

Any man who is having children with two women and not supporting them should be put in jail.

Western "elites score" again ... and on their path to wilful self-destruction - they ("elites") will commit fratricide against the rest of us (i.e. via either joining with the islamosupremicists in "holy war" against us or standing by and watching as we are marginalized and eventually eliminated -the maiin goal of islamists as well as cultural-relativists i.e. socialist-supremecists - (marxists))

"Polygamy in Canada is still illegal, the officials said.
"Not knowing the law is not an excuse," said Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community and Social Services, which funds the social assistance program called Ontario Works. "They should know that in Canada there is no polygamy and that only one wife is covered. I'm sure that if they are receiving more money it is because they are not reporting properly the situation of the other wife. They may be reporting them as children."
It is unclear from Mr. Ali's comments if the Muslim men are illegally claiming benefits for more than one wife, either as a spouse or a dependant, or if the additional wives are claiming as individuals, which is permissible. Under Islamic law, a Muslim man is allowed to have mulitple spouses.
John Tory, leader of the Ontario PC opposition, said the government needs to clarify how the Ontario Works Act and the Family Law Act apply.

As was pointed out on the Telegraph site in comments about the British payments for polygamy, this is not even in accord with Islamic law, which allows multiple wives only if the man can afford them. If he has to receive benefit, then he cannot afford the wives in the first place!

Ummmm............Does either Canada or the U.K. give fundamentalist Mormons(i.e those that split w/the "regular" Church of Latter day Saints when they agreed to give up polygamy for statehood etc)extra benefits for extra wives??????Whats good for the goose I mean.......whats good for the Muslim is good for the Mormons.............this is not equal rights its special rights,AND according to Islam arent you supposed to be able to SUPPORT them.

Based on my limited understanding of Muslim law and tradition regarding polygamy, a man is allowed to have up to 4 wives AS LONG AS HE VAN PROVIDE FOR THEM ALL, and of course for all the children they may produce. So why are these multiple Muslim wives and their assorted spawn receiving welfare benefits? Their husband, by not getting off his fat ass and getting a job, has failed in his first duty to provide for them, thus rendering the marriages null and void. Problem solved.
Of course, it wouldn't hurt for them to get off their own collective fat asses and go get jobs, too. But welfare by these people is considered "jizya", apparently; there's no shame in taking it from the detested infidel state. The Vietnamese immigrants I tutored when I first became an ESL teacher would have sooner died than collect welfare, their work ethic was that strong and they considered claiming welfare that much a disgrace.
And people wonder why I don't have any great desire to live in Canada anymore. Live and work there, so my hard-earned tax dollars can support leeches like these, who don't even respect the laws and customs of my country? No, thanks.
My God, I'm starting to sound more and more like a rabid right-winger every day...that's what these people have driven me too.

Apparently this is happening in the US as well. I've been told that especially Somali male refugees are getting into the US with their 'first wife' and their additional wives. The additional wives are admitted as 'sisters' or other close relatives and are often placed in an apartment down the street.
Since the additional wives are classified as single women with children they recieve additional welfare benefits. US Refugee resettlement workers are reluctant to speak up for, I suspect, a whole host of reasons including a reluctance to pass judgement on another culture!
