No Joy In Islam Update: "Religious police ban red roses," from Reuters (thanks to JE):
SAUDI Arabia's religious police have banned red roses ahead of Valentine's Day, forcing couples in the conservative Muslim nation to think of new ways to show their love. The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has ordered florists and gift shop owners in the capital Riyadh to remove any items coloured scarlet, which is widely seen as symbolising love, newspapers said.
"They visited us last night," the Saudi Gazette quoted an unidentified florist as saying.
It is not unusual for the Saudi vice squad to clamp down ahead of Valentine's Day, which it sees as encouraging relations between men and women outside of wedlock, the newspaper said....

Score One for Western Influence. The religious police are inhuman, but they are correct: any concessions to modern, universal apirations will lead to a gradual loosening of religious zeal.

Note to lurking Saudis: White and pink roses are nice, too.So are flowers that aren't roses. You can also buy ordinary square boxes of chocolate and MAKE them fancy by creating your own wrappings with white silk or satin, white lace trim, etc. Be creative; the religious police HATE that!

Another example of the decadent West's influence on Saudi society. When will it stop?
Maybe when even the stones and trees announce "there is a Valentine behind me! Come here, Muslims and kill it!"

This is just beyond ridiculous.

To the joy of the horticultural world, these loons and their perverted sensibilities may spur the development of a true black rose. I propose naming the new hybrid 'From Islam, With Love'.

profitsbeard,
I like skunk cabbage--it's the first wildflower of Spring! It's pollinated by carrion flies, don't ya know; thus the fetid aroma. Can't you think of something else (and not stinking Benjamin neither)--How about dog fennel?

Instead, celebrate Al Capone Day. Line the Religious Police up against the wall and shoot them.

Does the scarlet ban include blood? Surely they wouldn't go that far.

I can't even believe what I'm reading. This is just so foreign to my sensibilities, because as an adult, I make those decisions for myself. I can't relate to an outside force, some moral police, deciding what I can and cannot purchase, as if they were my parents.
God made red roses to be enjoyed, and what better time to enjoy them then on Valentine's Day; so for my Valentine's I'm going to ask my husband for some 'really' red roses this year, as red as he can find. Take that, Mom & Dad.

Oh my gosh, not love!
I like the whole "Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice" concept. It gives it that nice French Revolution feel, in keeping with classic Islamic images, like headless corpses, blood running in the streets and average citizens living in terror.
Vive la liberte!

Note to the Saudi Religious Police and the posters here:
Prior to P.C./multiculti sewage washing over my society, it was properly called SAINT Valentine's Day. It is a feast day on the Roman rite Catholic liturgical calendar celebrating a bishop and martyr who died for confessing Jesus as the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, Saviour, Son of God, crucified and risen. In other words, what in the world are your "devout" Islamic citizens doing even acknowledging his day!? You are as clueless as the secularists roaming my side of the globe.
Not that I am defending Valentine - he is on my sh*t list since he has never done a saintly deed for me! I suggest you mutaween do what this spinster now does, IGNORE HIM. My love life needs St. Jude Patron of Impossible Causes. Hey, not a bad saint for interceding for your country. Dear Lord, through the intercession of St. Jude please bring Saudi Arabia into the 21 st Century and into the Catholic fold. That ought to keep Jude plenty busy.

"remove any items coloured scarlet"
Maybe they would approve of black roses - since black symbolizes their death cult best.

bevc; right on! Why the hell are they celebrating a(nother) 'Hallmark' holiday?! Merchants rejoice; restaurateurs prepare; chocolateers gird thyselves; let the cash registers ring out!!!
If you want to tell some one you love them, do you need a special day, fercrissake?! (Especially one from a foreign calendar).
In any case, lilies would seem far more symbolic...

Hey Bevc, that's not cool. St. Valentine has no control over choices you make. But I will attest to the fact that St.Jude is the bomb. He always, ALWAYS finds my keys within two minutes when I lose them and got my friend's dad a new kidney.
Definitely ask St. Jude for help. But no more nasty stuff about St. Valentine. He died for his faith, for secretly marrying people when it was outlawed. He risked his life to do this. A little respect, please.

My love life needs St. Jude Patron of Impossible Causes. Posted by: bevc
St. Jude is on retreat. He needs a break after Boston winning two world series in the same decade. Not to mention NY's win over the Pats.lol
Changing gears.
You know, it just keeps getting more and more surreal. If they are going to have an issue with Valentine's day at least come at from the angle that it is based on a Catholic priest. But just because some choose to buy flowers, chocolates, cards, lingerie. Mmmmmm lingerie. The real reason the KSA and friends are stomping about. You see the morality police aren't exactly well paid and they can't except bribes(wink wink), so they just confiscate all this so as to present to their multiple wives.
at February 11, 2008 4:26 PM
Not surprised at this. The word "love" appears to be a four letter word to their sensibilities. Women are only there to be subservient breeders.

And thanks to Hugh for that Red Roses link, I e-mailed that to my lovely wife and now I don't have to buy flowers!

Isabella, Your Catholic crusader credentials are in doubt. You need some brushing up on Patron Saints. Give the lost articles job to ST. Anthony of Padua, patron of lost articles. St. Jude gets the impossible cases such as the guy I loved and lost and the entire darn Saudia Arabian peninsula.

The al-Saud hypocrite has to demonstrate minimum loyalty to Muhammad's false religion to retain his family's power, and what better way to accomplish this than to enact domestic policies that enrage Western sensibilities. The kuffar's disapproval and shock at typical Mohamedan barbarisms is something which the Muslim neanderthals relish in particular, and it keeps the Saudi monarchs' fat behinds on their throne. At least for a while longer.

Bevc,
'Nothing wrong with my Catholic credentials. I learned about St. Jude a decade before I learned about St. Anthony. If I had a nickel for every time somebody told me not to pray to St. Jude for lost items...but the proof is in the pudding. St. Jude has been my special and powerful patron for over thirty years and has never let me down. Besides, don't change the subject. I admonished you for talking jack about St. Valentine. Who knows, maybe you have something to do with your less than satisfying love life and St. Valentine has nothing to do with it.
