Iranian Man Sentenced to 4 Months in Jail, 30 Lashes for Walking Dog

I'll let the great moderate Ayatollah Sistani say it:

The following ten things are essentially najis [unclean]:

1. Urine
2. Faeces
3. Semen
4. Dead body
5. Blood
6. Dog
7. Pig
8. Kafir [unbeliever -- i.e., non-Muslims]
9. Alcoholic liquors
10. The sweat of an animal who persistently eats najasat [unclean things].

From FoxNews (thanks to all who sent this in):

A 70-year-old Iranian man was arrested and sentenced to four months in jail and 30 lashes for walking his dog, Adnkronos.com reported Tuesday. Police caught the man on the street with his dog in Shahr Rey, a suburb of Tehran.

Owners of domestic animals are forbidden from taking them on the streets of the city because Islam considers dogs to be impure. An Islamic judge later charged the man for "disturbing the public order,” Adnkronos.com reported.

Despite repeated warnings by the police, dog owners continue to defy authorities by taking their dogs outside their homes. Typical punishment for people caught with dogs outside is a fine or the "detention" of their animals in a pound, Adnkronos.com reported.

Ok, people ... say it with me, nice and loud, like ya mean it:

"FREE FLUFFY! AND HIS MASTER! AHMANUTJOB IS A BAS--"

Well, you get the idea. (I'm a dog person, myself.)

You really,REALLY have to wonder about a religion that hates dogs so much.Mans best friend....oh guess thats the Koran.....but years ago,my dh &I would hang out w/these Yemenis ,they all had dogs, but they told us according to Islam, dogs just weren't allowed in the house.I liked these guys, they ran some of the local "bodega/beer store" type places. It was very interesting exchanging knowledge, customs etc.I think w/many Muslims esp. those that tend to live in monocultural surroundings i,e "islamic",so much prejudice is due to ignorance-we always project our fears onto the other(of course,I'm super oversimplifying here).for example, these guys ABSOLUTELY REFUSED to believe I was Jewish!!For yrs, they insisted I was Palestinian-dh and I were playing a joke on them.Dh spent more time w/them and got to be quite good friends w/one.We discussed this a few days ago and thought that these days, nobody would talk the way we did then(talks about religion, what was stupid in it,what wasnt.....trying to esplain things to each other....granted this was maybe15 or 18 yrs ago...and the jihadis hadn't then completely corrupted most of the muslims who were more tolerant and curious......and not willing to swallow hook, line and sinker whatever some, ignorant, madrasa educated terrorist Wahhabi imam wanted to shove down their throats....sigh...

I have always tried to be open minded, judging people on their own merit,NOT being prejudicial etc.Its against my nature to dislike a whole religion(not that I dislike all the people in it)but all the rhetoric thats been thrown around lately......Also tolerance is well and good,BUT ONE,It works two ways,if you want to get it than give it,and TWO Muslims can have EQUAL rights in this country, but I dont think they should have EXTRA rights, nor should anyone......except in maybe super special circumstances(like kneeling buses for the handicapped).Sorry to have gotten off topic.....I do tend to let the rant runneth over...

have a gr8t day,
KittyBootz

This is where it gets so ridiculous - what would the Iranian religious police do to this boy?

Posted by: saint [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 21, 2008 9:27 AM

The islamic disdain for dogs is quite hard to understand. Dogs are also unclean in Judaism, since they neither chew the cud (i.e., are ruminants) nor part the hoof, but Judaic uncleanliness mostly means that Jews are forbidden to eat them or touch their dead bodies.

Meanwhile, Michael Vick is temporarily unavailable for comment.

I have a lovely Lurcher and his name is Mohammed, I feel really bad because I named him after a paedophile, racist son of a bitch.

He does not seem to mind to much but every time I walk him and shout Mohammed, Mohammed, half the population fall to their knees while the other half dive for cover.

Not true, his real name is Trotsky.

Can a 70 year old endure 30 lashes?

Posted by: interestinconundrum [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 21, 2008 10:43 AM

Not only do I own a dog, it is also black! Bad Magic!

Neither the dog or myself intend to submit!

........................................

Repulsive--they are going to imprison and *lash* an elderly man for *walking his dog*. Here in my neighborhood people like this gentleman pass my house dozens of times a day. I usually wave to them if I am out working in my garden.

Here in the West he would be considered a conscientious pet owner. I think this sentence not only reflects the Islamic attitude toward dogs, but also the idea that keeping pets is a sign of adopting Western mores. This is part of the reason that pet markets were targetted in the recent catastrophic homicide bombings in Baghdad.
..........................

Here's another animal-related update. San Francisco columnist Jon Carroll featured an item yesterday about Arifur Rahman, the Bangladeshi "Mohammad Cat" cartoonist.

He writes that Arifur Rahman was sentenced to a month in jail. I tried to find independent confirmation, and ran accross an article that claims that Rahman (as of last month) had already been in jail for over *four months*--since September 17 of last year.

According to the BBC:

Mr Rahman was jailed under Bangladesh's emergency laws.

These give the authorities powers to hold people without charge if they are deemed to threaten national security.
................

A threat to national security?

And now, the obligatory conspiracy theory:

The government's information minister said the cartoons were part of a conspiracy to throw the country in chaos, but a senior editor of the newspaper said the cartoons had been published by mistake.
....................................

I plan to email Carroll with an update. He may not have all the details down, but kudos to him for covering the story at all. I think this poor cartoonist has largely been forgotten.

Still, Carroll is generally a very liberal writer with a decidedly multicultural bent. He prefaces the Arif Rahman item with a recounting of the "Mohammed was a cat lover" story.

As the tales goes, one day Mohammed heard the call to prayer, and found that his beloved cat, Muezza, was sleeping on his prayer robe. Mohammed cut the sleeve off his robe so he would leave his cat undisturbed. (I've read this story before--it sounds very unlike Mohammed. Does anyone have any idea where it comes from. Is it from a hadith? A story that turns up later in the West? I have only read it in compendiums of cute pet stories).

After citing this almost certainly apocryphal story, Carroll notes that the Rahman story is ironic, in light of the "exalted nature of cats in Islam". I guess they are exalted--only in the sense that they are not quite as despised as dogs and pigs.

The Carrol story is listed on SFgate, the Chronicle's web site, under the head--I kid you not--of "Why Muhammed was a cool guy".

1. Urine

Urine is a good antiseptic, has saved wounded soldiers on the battlefield, even camel’s urine.

5. Blood

Good eating in blood sausage, blood pudding, tastes like liver. Is liver najis too?

9. Alcoholic liquors

Red wine has tannin [polyphenols] which is good for the heart. Hard liquor has some social benefits [with a designated driver], but not to excess.

10. The sweat of an animal who persistently eats najasat [unclean things].

Who cares? Pigs and dogs don’t sweat.

Islamic ignorance is fathomless, superstitious nonsense invented by their ignorant prophet, himself a product of primitive Arab lore.

The rest of the list is silly, especially dogs and pigs. How about wolves, coyotes, fox, boars? Where do they fit into the pantheon of Islamic najasat?

The 8. Kafir is Islamic [supremacist] projection, of no value at all.

Their ignorant restrictions make no sense at all to any reasonable and intelligent person. So what does that make Islamics who believe this stuff? Hopeless.

During the lifetime of Allah's Apostle, the dogs used to urinate, and pass through the mosques

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "A man saw a dog eating mud from (the severity of) thirst. So, that man took a shoe (and filled it) with water and kept on pouring the water for the dog till it quenched its thirst. So Allah approved of his deed and made him to enter Paradise." And narrated Hamza bin 'Abdullah: My father said. "During the lifetime of Allah's Apostle, the dogs used to urinate, and pass through the mosques (come and go), nevertheless they never used to sprinkle water on it (urine of the dog.)"

Mogra affirmed that Shari`ah does not preclude being around guide dogs, and it is actually an Islamic duty to help the visually impaired.
tell that to some taxi drivers from Somalia at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport
having known several guide dogs I can tell you they are a lot more intelligent and obedient than the average dog. Sometimes too intelligent. My friend s golden lab service dog Sandy was too smart for her own good my friend was visiting one day and she wants a potato salad supper so I made some up before I took her to her doctor's appointment. We left her service dog/guide dog in the house alone, that dog loved potatoe salad unfortunately, it gave her lethal gas to anyone around her [farts]
while we were out, that darn dog figured out how to open the refrigerator and ate all 5 pounds of potatoes salad. So I can see one reason that Muslims might not like dogs. Their farts

Its against my nature to dislike a whole religion- KittyBootz

First, Welcome.

Your a better person than I. I can't understand how you can not dislike a whole religion that wants to destroy you and those you love.

To not dislike the whole religion of islam seems confused or unaware of what it really stands for.

Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ Who said: If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Very excellent post, Battle of Tours.

As for me, KittyBootz and Borg, most definitely I hate the entire "religion" of Mohamedism. Not the people who subscribe to it; they deserve our prayers, compassion, and to hear the truth in love from our lips and writings.

The truth will win out. The ignorant, superstitious invention of Mohammed will be overcome by the truth.

Interesting post, Saint. Did you notice a few things--firstly, while they are accommodating the dog, they are not allowing him on the premises--he will be kennelled outside the mosque. Still, after the stories of Muslim cabbies refusing to pick up passengers with guide dogs, I guess this is comparatively enlightened.

The dog, a retriever, was selected because this breeds salivates less than most, and saliva is considered especially najis.

I thought this line, though, noted just in passing, was the most telling:

"Khatri’s retriever is getting extra training to restrain it from instincts to lick its owner."

They are training this poor animal--who will of course spend most of his time with this blind boy--to refrain from showing him any affection.

This is pretty sad.

This action of sentencing a man for walking his dog is beyond ridiculous! It's down right stupid!

We own a cute little dog named, Kelly; as do most of our neighbors own dogs, and walking ones dog is a very relaxing and healthy thing to do. Something Muslims would actually enjoy and benefit from. How STUPID that dogs are considered "unclean" to the point where they and their owners are treated like criminals. They are Gods creation, and we are to treat them with love and kindness as the good stewards that we are SUPPOSE to be of them.

This is just SO back-ass backwards!

Focus on apprehending and sentencing the REAL criminals - who are the truly the "unclean" members of society. You know who they are, they are right under your noses and in your mosques.

Islam be gone!

Islamic ignorance is fathomless, superstitious nonsense invented by their ignorant prophet, himself a product of primitive Arab lore.

We cannot understand and we don't know & the more we understand the more we withdraw from it.

This is because the thing that is being discused is alien to our thought processes.

The whole religion and those who practice it are not of our stock - they are not part of "us"

This needs to change

Posted by: ericthekuffar [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 21, 2008 3:25 PM

Yeah, I didn't think that dogs could sweat either, til she got wet and "doggish" (stinky- smelling) sitting in the sun this summer, only a day after her bath, without having rolled in anything (I watched) ... oh well ...

Posted by: Lori B. [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 21, 2008 3:29 PM

If they think that dogs are unclean, then they might try bathing them once in a while. I bet they smell worse than dogs do because bathing is not a high priority in Islamaland.

Posted by: champ [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 21, 2008 4:19 PM

Bigfoot-
Dogs are unclean to EAT. That is an entirely different proposition. My Jewish Great Grandmother would go leave baskets of food for poor people accompanied by her beloved German shepherd dog for protection. She'd leave before the people opened the door as (we were taught) to shame someone is worse than to give nothing at all.

Pig's are certainly 'unclean' but in Russia, the Jews were known as the buyers of pig bristles for brushmaking. They would travel among the peasants and spend the sabbath in the nearest synagogue and board with a Jewish family.

Posted by: poetcomic1 [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 21, 2008 4:29 PM

Hmmm...I wonder what the punishment would be for eating a BLT and having a beer while sitting at the Salvation Army, giving blood, with your German Shepard, who just made a small mess, sitting beside you?

Posted by: s [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 21, 2008 8:53 PM

How about T-shirts that state:

KAFIR
Proud to be unclean

Anyone?

Posted by: Obelisk1 [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 21, 2008 10:22 PM

Muslims being consider dogs unclean, I owe my life. To my chuwawa i was unconscious in a coma after my last stroke sand as I don't get many visitors. So would have been two or three weeks before someone came over Sammy I guess knew something was wrongand started barking hislittle head off until neighbors called my sister and she came and checked on me. If not been for him I would have been dead so if Muslims don't like dogs I do

I've always thought dogs amazingly perceptive, especially my German Shepherd. That's why I has occurred to me that Mohammed didn't like dogs, because they sensed the evil in him and behaved accordingly. Nothing like being outed by four-legged furry creatures everywhere you go...

Hashem Aghajari, an Iranian university professor, was initially sentenced to 3 years in prison because he criticized some of the present Islamic practices in Iran being in contradiction with the original practices and ideology of Islam, and particularly for stating that Muslims were not "monkeys" and "should not blindly follow" the clerics. Notice that he was debating from an Islamic perspective. It becomes quite obvious that "Islamic regimes" exploit Islam to consolidate their power.

Posted by: Comment [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 24, 2008 12:29 AM

Oh and about "najis": according to the Shafi'i school of Sunni Islam, the following things are najis:
wine and other spirituous drinks,
dogs,
swine,
dead animals that were not ritually slaughtered, blood,
excrements,
milk of animals whose meat Muslims are not allowed to eat.

Alcohol is not impure according to the Hanafi school, while living swine is not impure according to the Malikis.

The "Kafirs" were only added later as a political tool by some Shi'ites.
