Not surprisingly, this article doesn't let on that Islam could have anything to do with that, what with wife beating sanctioned in Qur'an 4:34, and in the sayings and example of Muhammad. He himself struck his child bride, Aisha, for following him out of the house without permission; her father, Abu Bakr, is recorded hitting her even after her marriage to Muhammad. And on the subject of leaving the home, Umdat al-Salik (Reliance of the Traveler) instructs:
The husband may forbid his wife to leave the home because of the hadith related by Bayhaqi that the Prophet ... said: "It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to allow someone into her husband's house if he is opposed, or to go out if he is averse" (m10.4).
If women's rights activists and would-be Muslim reformers truly wish to make a difference in combating domestic violence, they must confront passages such as these.
"Muslims speak up about domestic violence," from Deutsche Presse-Agentur:
SYDNEY - Women and children are beaten by their menfolk in homes across Australia. Mostly the spur to domestic violence is alcohol but sometimes cultural mores are at work that allow men to excuse their behaviour.
“They view wives and daughters as an extension of their honour and when they deviate from what they would view as accepted ... they see it as an undermining of their own status,” said Sydney psychiatrist Tanveer Ahmed.
He was talking about violence in Muslim homes and commenting specifically on a call from the Muslim Women’s National Network Australia (MWNNA) to tackle those in the community who use religion to justify domestic violence.
“It’s a real problem,” MWNNA president Aziza Abdel-Halim told The Sydney Morning Herald. “There’s wife beating, there’s children beating. Some of them go to the extent of forbidding the woman to leave the home.”
Ahmed said Muslim victims of domestic violence were reluctant to go to the police. If they went to the imam of their mosque, he was likely to side with the perpetrator.
“Very rarely would you get the imam trying to punish the man,” he said. “They’ll see it more as, if not culturally appropriate, then culturally understandable.”

". . . they must confront passages such as these."
How? The Quran is the direct word of Allah and the hadiths are the sayings of the perfect man.
(Is there an English word for hadith?)
Many Protestant Christians just ignore the teachings of Paul. I have heard Christians justify how they push Paul's preachings aside by placing them in the context of the times and allow women now to have equal rights. Paul never claimed to be a (or The) perfect man. Fundamentalist Christians who are totally against alcohol and gambling in all forms really have no basis in the Bible for their calls for prohibition and bans on gambling, but Muslims have specific passages to justify every one of their beliefs.
Is there room to claim that Islam no longer needs to be militant because there are over one billion of them and no longer face danger from marauding tribes? I just don't think so.

Something that should outrage Australians is a website posting by a Christian leader and legislator, Rev. The Hon. Dr. Gordon Moyes, A.C., M.L.C, "Stop Blathering about Sharia Here." In the article he not only endorses the Archbishop of Canterbury's recommended accommodation of Sharia Law in Britain, but goes on to say to the blatherers, "Have a cup of tea, a Bex and a good lie down." Read it at: http://www.gordonmoyes.com/2008/02/22/stop-blathering-about-sharia-here/
If Sharia law is hostile women, apostates, and non-Muslims, how then can such parties to a dispute get a fair shake, and who determines if they, indeed, agreed voluntarily to take up the dispute before a Sharia court?

Wife beating is approved in the Qur'an, but it is against the law Down Under. It now longer becomes law when it is applicable to some and not to others. Is there any western society that thinks that wife beating should be legalized? Deafening silence. Sharia Law is not law at all - it is a license for boys to misbehave. Time to cast it aside on the ash heap of history.

doglover - you have a good woman! :-)
And as for the article - this is muslim 'family values' in action. This is their way they 'raise muslim women on a pedestal' - by beating the crud out of her so she runs to a pedestal to try to get away!

(Is there an English word for hadith?) -- Pelayo
"Hadith" literally means "Sayings"
The hadiths in general are collections of sayings Mohammed was supposed to have said.
I believe this is one of three categories of Mohammedanism which altogether constitute the "Sunna" (which means "Path" or "Way" and I suppose could be the Arabic semantic equivalent (though not the spiritual equivalent of course) of the "Tao"):
Sunna qawliyya – the sunna of sayings = hadith (What Mohammed was reputed to have said about this, that and the other thing -- all of which no matter how trivial, disgusting, or outright unethical are to be treated as the highest law, once their validity is determined through a complex process of verification)
Sunna fi’liyya – sunna of doing (Whatever Mohammed did -- his actions -- which are to be followed by every Muslim, since Mohammed is the "Best Model of Conduct" (Uswa Hasana) for all time")
Sunna taqririyya – sunna of silences (Whatever Mohammed left silent can also become a part of Islamic life/law: i.e., if Mohammed did not say "No don't do that" about some behavior recorded in some hadith, many Muslim jurists can use that as a basis for making that behavior okay to do.)
P.S.: Note from reading the descriptions about of the Sunna (which is the majority type of Islam, over 85% of the world's Muslims following this) how perfectly apt the term "Mohammedanism" becomes. This become more acutely so when one factors in the fact that in Sunni Islam the Sunna is as important as, if not in certain ways more important than, the Koran: Consider this observation by the Muslim professor of law, Chibli Mallat:
“...none [of the 4 schools of Islamic law] would disagree with the statement attributed to the Syrian jurist Awza’i (died 774 a.d.) that the Book is in greater need of the sunnah than sunnah is of the Book.”

They would probably keep domestic violence and child violence secret because telling outsiders would put their faith in a bad light.

"He who sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed." If this commandment is obeyed, then the four billion people who do not believe in the biblical god must be killed. Exodus 22:20
Do not allow others to worship a different god. Conquer them and destroy their religious property: “Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images.”
Exodus 23:24
"And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money (property)." Exodus 21:20-21
"And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do." "And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do." Exodus 21:7
"When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them captive, And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife; Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house; and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails; And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her [i.e. rape her or engage in consensual sex], and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife. And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not make merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her." Deuteronomy 21:10-14
"But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself" Deuteronomy 20:14
If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her, And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid: Then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel's virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate: And the damsel's father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her; And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city. And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him; And they shall amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days. But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel: Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you. Deu. 22:13-21
If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you. Deu 22:23-24
Just some passages in the Old Testament. I know Christians and Jews don't practice this stuff anymore (Christians because they don't have to obey Mosaic Law and Jews because they havn't had many chances to make their own laws and have since become secularized). But it shows that the Bible also has a totalitarian doctrine- it's just that Jews and Christians aren't willing to obey it anymore. Muslims, on the other hand, only emerged from theocratic Ottoman and Qajar rule in the past century, and is taking a while to secularize.
