LONDON (AFP) - The number of forced marriages involving young women from Britain being taken abroad to wed is likely far higher than first thought, an official report said Tuesday.
While a government unit investigating forced marriage deals with just 300 cases a year, the true figure could be up to 4,000, the Home Office-funded study into the issue said.
There are 300 inquiries about the issue every year in one town alone, said the report's author Dr. Nazia Khanum, citing figures for Luton, a town with a high immigrant population.
"It's a reasonable assumption that it is the tip of the iceberg," she said, noting that with rape and domestic violence only 10 to 12 percent of cases are thought to be reported.
Sayeeda Warsi, a Muslim member of the House of Lords, said forced marriages should be treated as a criminal offence like domestic violence, to protect young women from ethnic minorities.
"As a society we draw a line in the sand," she told GMTV. "This is not a culturally sensitive issue, this is an abhorrent act which we must stand together on."
Khanum added: "Forced marriage has nothing to do with religion. It is a part of a patriarchal system where parents believe they know what is best for their children."
Bridge for sale. Islamic law is constructed around the belief that "Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other" (Qur'an 4:34), and after the example of Muhammad's marriage to Aisha, has allowed the marriage of girls as young as 9.
Besides, didn't your parents think they knew best for you? Did they whisk you back to the old country in junior high for a marriage you had no substantive say in?
But the government argues that criminalising forced marriage would only drive it underground.
Home Office Minister Alan West told the House of Lords Monday: "The difficulty is that these things happen in families. We have taken a lot of advice and talked to many people.
"There is a feeling that the crime would go even further underground because people generally do not want to put their families through this."
A separate study to be released Tuesday highlights how many children have suddenly stopped attending school, amid fears that some have been forced into marriages against their will.
The BBC said it had been told by one teenage Pakistani girl that she was withdrawn from school aged 13, taken to Pakistan and forced to marry a man who raped her.
She blamed the authorities for failing to launch a search for her. "I think they let me down," she said. "I did still secretly think when I was in Pakistan, the school might search for me.
"Nobody looked for me. It was horrific."
It was disclosed this month that 33 girls were missing from schools in Bradford despite efforts to locate them. It is feared they have been forced into marriages.

She was probably a straight 'A' student, and thought someone would care that she was kidnapped and missing. She waited and waited, and no one came. If you can't cry for that, then you need to re-examine the reasons we battle this evil called Islam.

Meanwhile, the BBC are serving up another steaming plate of multicultural tripe to their viewers. The drama "White Girl", in which a dysfunctional, broken, unemployed white family are dumped in a mainly muslim housing project, was broadcast last night. In this narrative, the English are portrayed as feckless human trash, and the muslims as wonderful, stable, generous human beings, devoted to their children. I guess it must have skipped the part where the muslim schoolgirls were being offered for sale in marriage to their uncles and cousins in Pakistan. The whole dog and pony show made me livid.

I reiterate a point I've made recently which touch on this subject of "womens' rights" within Islam:
Focusing on the way Islam victimizes women (or anyone else) is a slippery slope. Yes -- speak out on it -- the vileness of Islam in all its dimensions needs revealing badly -- but buying into the victimology cult of Islam and especially pitying or crying over the way Muslims victimizes themselves will accomplish nothing. Not only does this play into their Islamic victim-pimping culture, but tacit within this approach is an expectation that Muslims ever will rectify or reform these heinous abusive aspects of Islam if only we point them out...
It will never happen.
I believe we should stress the sinister aspects of such stories as " forced marriages" mainly with a focus on how it harms us and our society - not how it harms the Muslims. The damage Islam wreaks on Muslims is their affair, and their fault, and as it is not our job, as it must NEVER become our impossible job to be the reformers of Islam -- it is also not our part to be the mourners for the myriad ways Muslims foul the world and themselves by perpetuating the barbarity of Islam.
Our moral suasion has proven completely inneffective with them. Muslim "morality", such as it is, is immune to our sensibilites. Muslims can and should be shamed for the horribleness of Islam. But Muslims never will be shamed into changing their vile beliefs. Islam seems singularly designed to strengthen in proportion to the suffering and horribleness it inflicts. Shaming Islam and Muslims should have one purpose, and one purpose only: to subvert their arrogant adherence to Islam, and to shatter Muslim confidence in Islam. The nasty inumerable failures of Islam must be shoved relentlessly down their Muslim throats until they absolutely choke on it. That, or the Muslims will triumph in the end by shoving their Islam down our throats until we are the ones left choking and gasping for air. That is the way Islam has come to shackle over a billion slaves so far.
In this specific case, is the suffering of these women sad and deplorable? Of course. But it is of far more import to us that Muslims are furiously and concertedly working across the spectrum to swell their numbers in our land as quickly and ruthlessly as possible. THAT is the portentious critical kernel, the 'takeaway', of this plot. The incidental suffering of a single Muslim woman here or there is immaterial to our fate if we don't focus on what is important.
Who is encouraging this concerted frenzy to import more and more Muslim men into Dar ul Harb? Who is coordinating this exploding trend? What is the explanation given, the exhortation made to act thus? Muslims are doing this whether they hail from Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, or "Palestine". They are doing it in Brooklyn, London, Paris, Lackawanna and Lodi. Why?
Learn the answers to these questions, and you'll be closer to understanding the true nature and scope behind their Islamic war against us. This isn't just some quaint barbaric custom from some random primitive culture. It is a broad multi-pronged vanguard war maneuver to swell Islam's ranks behind enemy lines while the infidel enemy remains asleep and confused. JihadWatch should not be fueling that confusion by missing the larger and deadly purport of such stories, or conflating trivial tragedy with sinister widespread Islamic enemy tactics.

Typical multiculturalism thinking. When islamic fanatics murder in the name of islam we all have to beat our chests and asks ourselves what WE should have done to stop the radicalisation of the young mass murderers.
When young women are forced into marriage by their own parents using their own ideology then we must all beat our chests and ask what WE should have done to stop it.
Further proof that these people just have no idea. EVERYTHING that befalls them is the fault of anyone BUT them.

When are we going to wake up to these whingers. Don't lay the blame for your violent mysoganistic religion at anyone else's feet but your own. You demand that the society you live in - but choose not to integrate into, and work against - give you preferential treatment for your oh so sensitive "religious" beliefs, but when it goes wrong (or should I say, when it goes the way it does in every islamic country in the world) you demand that your hosts take the blame.
When will you accept responsibility for your own failures? It's your religion that creates this.

Funny -- it appears to me that people are showing their outrage at the barbarity of child rape which is rife in Muslim society. It seems to me that this site is one of the few IN THE ENTIRE WORLD where human concern for the heinousness of Islam and the suffering it engenders is discussed and revealed openly for all to see -- yet this poster first attempts to ban a commentor at the top, and failing that, proceeds to scold us for our "lack of human decency". What makes you assume we're all Christian, or that we somehow need in any way to illustrate to your satisfaction our bond tides in that regard?
I sirmise that sympathy for the devil passes in some quarters for proper Christianity these days. I surmise that some posters posing as Christians with only the most sinister of intentions to disrupt this site are attempting to pass for proper Christians. I am no Christian, but I also know we are not here posting for any lack among them. We are posting here because of the lack of humanity in a thing called Islam and the Jihad war Muslims are waging. Perhaps you've heard of it? The site is called "JihadWatch", after all, not "What's wrong with the heartless Christians" for God's sake!

When muslim parents stop indoctrinating their children with hatred from the day they are born, when muslim mothers don't encourage and celebrate the martyrdom of their sons, when muslim fathers and brothers don't murder their daughters and sisters to save men's honour, when muslim children are not used as human shields and suicide bombers, maybe then I will care about muslim children and their suffering.

In my view, true compassion and human decency requires that the cult of Islam be destroyed.
If one cares about Muslims as fellow human beings, he will strive to rescue them from their entrapment in the cult. That rescue can only be accomplished, ultimately, by discrediting and destroying the cult's ideology, as jsla outlined.
Islam must be exposed for what is. It must be publicly condemned, resisted, defanged, and completely demolished. Those who act to perpetuate this cult of brigandage--by apologizing for it, by propping up Islamic governments, or by tolerating their societal dysfunctions in the name of cultural sensitivity--are only prolonging and spreading the human misery.

You are correct. This young girl deserves our pity. She was taken to a strange country and raped by a man whom she was forced to marry. Of course she thought the school would look into it. Schools do that. Probably her teachers were the only compassionate people in her life.
As a person who has had posts deleted, (and still not able to leave posts on JW,) please Robert Spencer, I request that you delete that hateful comment.
This sort of blame placed by ImADhimmi on a child rape victim does not speak well for this site.

When I hear stories like this one,
I can’t help but to think of the two sisters from Texas, Amina and Sarah Said, who were brutally murdered by their father.
. They had a mother, a brother, boyfriends, friends, class mate’s teachers, and they even had the courts, and not one to save them.
Remember they were raped by their father when they were 8 and 9 years old.
Right here in the USA; and they were allowed to drop charges, so the monster who was abusing them would not have to go to jail.
The mother knew they were being raped, and she returns them to the rapist
Then she runs with them and their boy friends, because “daddy” said he was going to kill them.
After knowing this, and knowing what an animal the father is, “Mom” returns home and hands them over.
Tricked and lied to by their brother and mother.
They drive off ALONE with “daddy”. To the slaughter.
If that is not the real crazy thing, how about this;
Mommy and sonny are now living with a brother-in-law (the murderer’s brother)!

How can a child of 12 or 13 escape this?

Secondly, did I ever once place the blame on the victim? NO. I questioned why the victim blamed the school, the authorities, or whoever, instead of blaming the people who put her in that situation, her parents. It certainly isn't the school's responsibility to track down students who don't show up for class, and if no-one reported her absence to the authorities, what were they supposed to do about it?
Her comment seemed to me to be typical of the muslim mindset of blaming everything but their "religion" for their problems.

Really? Her belief that the authorities might have searched for her seemed to me like the forlorn hope any scared young kid going through hell would have held on to. She was abducted, held against her will and raped. If all you can feel is contempt for her comment - she was all of thirteen, remember - then you need help.

Joe Schmoe gets the dhimi of the year award. If anyone had bothered to read the original story they may have learned that upon hearing of her fathers intention to marry her off, she reported it to the
BRITISH police who interviewed the father and daughter together, so much for permitting coercion,said okey-dokey, then marched merrily on their way to issue more parking tickets. The family promptly moved from the area , but were again interviewed, collectively by a social worker, but since the father had not given his daughter a slap, everything was OK. Only after the intervention of two state agencies was she taken to Pakistan, held there for two years against her will and the married of. Yes, she, and I blame the authorities.
