The assailants may have thought that their victim was doing "mischief in the land."
"The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides..." (Qur'an 5:33)
"Limbs cut off for illicit relations," from Press Trust of India (thanks to Twostellas):
Islamabad, March 22: The hands and a foot of a man were chopped off by a group of seven men in eastern Pakistan on the suspicion that he had an illicit relationship with their sister.Ishaq, Altaf, Abbas, Mushtaq, Sadiq, Sabir and Junaid allegedly chopped off the hands and the right foot of Allah Diwaya, a resident of Basti Gujj near Multan in Punjab province, for his alleged relations with their sister Irshad.
The incident occurred on Friday night. Mr Diwaya had allegedly kidnapped Irshad three months ago, the police said on Saturday. She is currently at a woman’s home in Bahawalpur. Mr Diwaya is a married man and has six children, officials said.
Two of the seven, Ishaq and Altaf, were arrested while raids are being conducted to nab the others. A case has also been registered against the seven. Doctors said Mr Diwaya is in a stable condition and had been given five pints of blood to save his life. (PTI)

I would have expected that Irshad would have been the target of the violence.

Wait, I thought that you are supposed to kill your own sister in a situation like this...
I am so confused, I am never sure who Islam demands you kill!
Guess I can't convert.

Actually, that makes this story good news, for a change. Normally, as you point out, it would be the sister at the receiving end. In this case, her 7 brothers, instead of killing her, went ahead and mutilated Mr Allah.
In dar ul Islam, I'd call that progress

Um..... shouldn't they have chopped off something else?

I said it was good news in my first sentence in post number one and got edited. I guess the way that I said it was more ambiguous and could have been taken wrong. I meant it in the same way that you did, of course: it is good news because normally the victim is the recipient of the punishment.

Why do you think the sister is hiding out in a "woman's home"?

More specifically, a "woman's home" in another city?
Has anyone counted her feet and hands recently?

'...the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides...(Qur'an 5:33)
'The hands and a foot of a man were chopped off'
Bit of a disconnect there; what happened? Couldn't get the concept of "opposite" right?

Thank you, Vee. This sort of punishment is right out of the Qur'an. The alleged "religion of peace".

Mischief in the land?? I am guilty of that every day...but I don't think I will turn myself in.
I might need my feet for something...

How Islam has turned what were once civilized inhabitants of India into bloodthirsty savages.
Karachi: An alarming trend — that of Muslims kidnapping Pakistani Hindu girls and forcing them to convert to Islam — in Pakistan’s Sindh province is forcing the worried resident Hindu community to marry off their daughters as soon as they are of marriageable age or to migrate to India, Canada or other nations.
Recently, at least 19 such abduction cases have occurred in Karachi alone, while several others have been reported in the media.
Sanao Menghwar, a Hindu resident of Karachi’s Punjab Colony, is a traumatised man; all three of his daughters —Aishwarya, Reena and Reema — have been kidnapped and forced to convert to Islam.
