Living up to his nickname.
The excuse we're probably going to hear will involve extolling the virtues of communication. But whether that is useful, or just a hollow photo-op and so much wasted breath depends on the substance of the discussion. And it seems much more likely that this "dialogue" will focus on Israeli concessions, not on the demand that Hamas renounce the goal of destroying Israel and stop firing rockets from Gaza.
"Former US president Carter plans meeting with Hamas' Mashaal," by Yitzhak Benhorin for Israel News:
WASHINGTON – US network Fox reported Wednesday that former US president Jimmy Carter was preparing for an unprecedented meeting with Hamas politburo chief Khaled Mashaal.
The Arabic-language newspaper Al-Hayat reported Tuesday that Carter was planning a trip to Syria for mid-April, during which he would meet with Mashaal, the exiled head of the Islamist group, on April 18.
Jimmy Carter was US president between 1976 and 1980, and was partially responsible for the peace treaty signed between Israel and Egypt. Recently he has been blamed by Israel for harboring anti-Israeli views, due in part to the release of his book, "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid".
Israeli officials have received requests to allow him to enter the dispute between Israel and the Palestinians as a mediator.
Carter did not receive a negative response, but his request was evaded, officials said. However, according to reports, the former president plans to involve himself in the dispute with or without Israel's approval.
Deanna Congileo, Carter’s press secretary, confirmed in an e-mail to FOX network that Carter will be in the Mideast in April. Pressed for comment, Congileo did not deny that the former president is considering visiting Mashaal.
The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) responded to the reports by calling upon presidential candidates John McCain, Barack Obama, and Hilary Clinton to object to Carter's plan to meet with Mashaal, claiming that as head of a terrorist organization it would be illegal for an American official to meet with him.
In a press statement, Executive Director of the RJC Matthew Brooks slammed the reported meeting, saying that it was unacceptable for a former American president to glorify a terrorist organization by meeting with its leader.
He said that Hamas denies Israel's right to exist, and is involved with the kidnapping of its soldiers, in addition to which it led celebrations in the streets of Gaza following the 9/11 attacks. He added that Mashaal has praised the Iranian president for his 'bravery' in denying the Holocaust.

Could Dhimmi Jimmy turn himself in in place of Gilad Shalit? That way, the Israelis will get their guy back, and as for the US, I'm sure we can make a small sacrifice for the sake of peace? He could even start Homeless Habitat chapters in Damascus and Gaza - I'm sure that the unemployed Pali yutes could be thrilled to work with him.

Carter should have simply faded into the obscurity he richly deserves for he was undoubtedly the worst president of my lifetime. But the worst rarely do, and those without wisdom or loving hearts just keep making the same mistakes, over and over. Carter is a viscous anti-Semite and he should be gone. No doubt the Saudi's fund his efforts along with the rest of America's arabists.

I still think that Mr. Carter's actions constitute giving aid and comfort to the enemy in time of war.

"Carter did not receive a negative response, but his request was evaded"
Since Carter is a former US President, I can understand why Israel would just avoid dealing with him.
But Carter was one of the worst US presidents ever, and US citizens have been trying to ignore him since he left office. It may have worked for a decade, but he came back with a vengence.
So avoiding him just doesnt work. He went from being an incompetant leader to being a flat-out traitor to this country.
Too bad we cant retroactively impeach his posterior!
Once he is in Syria, revoke his citizenship and refuse him readmittance into this country.

What about the peanut farm? There's a drought in Georgia, isn't there?

This should work out well. Iran supports Hamas and has influence over the Mashaal and the other Hamas leaders. Carter's previous diplomacy with Iran has led to historic results. Indeed, the Islamic Republic of Iran is the most significant legacy of the Carter administration. I can't wait to see how Jimmah leverages all that political capital.

I used to live in Iran before Carters stupid push for 'Human rights' let all of the criminals out of the prison there (1978). Let me just say:
That nice country hasn't quite recovered.
But then, he also commenced Operation Cyclone next door. That also had consequences...

Jimmy the Dhimmi is Dangerous & Dumb.
Maybe Jimmy would like to move to the Middle East and call Islamoland his new home; and then we can throw him a Bon Voyage party complete with rock throwing as party favors. Please, no balloons.

What a contemptible buffoon. He was a disaster as a President and - contrary to the opinion of many - he's been even worse as an ex-Prez.

From the article:

Rightly so. Carter has deservedly sunk into obscurity and irrelevance, but the three current contenders for President must be pushed and pressed to give answers on every subject related to Islam and jihad. They cannot be allowed to continue to evade the topic. Every call-in radio show, every "town hall meeting", every debate, they must be prodded to give specific answers to specific questions.
"If you were President, how would you deal with a former President meeting with the head of an Islamic terrorist organization?" is a fine question.

Yes, joeblough... edited.
I've had the honor of having my chain yanked here a few times, too.
But, Hugh and Robert are pretty nice about it. Well, except for that time I had to stay late for detention.
Cheers.

Some Carter critics called the latest reports typical of the ex-president.
"It's about par for the course from President Carter, demonstrating a lack of judgment typical of what he does," "To go to Syria to visit Hamas at this point is just an ill-timed, ill-advised decision on his part.""When you put the prestige of a former president of the United States in a meeting with one of its terrorist leaders, you're giving it a legitimacy and currency it never had,"
John Bolton, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
"I'm not surprised that Carter would do this, as he has been supporting Palestinian extremism for many years,""I think this [visit] undermines the U.S. policy of isolating Hamas," . "I think this encourages Europeans to further dilute their sanctions against the Hamas government."
Steve Emerson, director of the Investigative Project on Terrorism.
And now I have a bridge for sale for you Dhimmi Carter supporters
Carter's efforts demonstrate he's a true partner in peace."I think if true, this report would indicate that President Carter is willing to travel any road in search of peace," he said. "I think President Carter would only undertake such a mission if he believed that something could be achieved in terms of peace and reconciliation in the region. Because of Carter's reputation among Palestinians he might be able to bring some pressure to bear.
Ibrahim Hooper, communications director of (CAIR)
The Al-Hayat report stated that Carter would be traveling in his capacity as head of the Carter Center , and not in his capacity as a former president.
"That's a distinction that's absurd," said Steve Emerson.

Years ago I had some respect for Carter. He was honest enough to admit "adultery in the heart" and his appointment of Paul Volcker at the Fed essentially doomed his reelection. But he has since the Sinai accord by sheer mendacity cast himself as an alleged peacemaker.
The Sinai deals were possible only because the Israelis gave up the entire Sinai and Egypt was tired of Nasserism and Arafat (and and in return got about 2 billion a year). It had nothing to with Carter's mushroom magic. Since then his record of interference is nothing short of disastrous. From North Korea to Yugoslavia to Venezuela, this most hypocrital of Americans has insuniated himself, only to make things worse. Reagan died as the man in whose brought a smile to everyone, Nixon as an elder statesman, Ford at ease with his conscience. Nobody though will mourn Carter except some famous Democrat liars like Clinton.

The question that needs to be asked of Mr.Carter:
So what is are your opinions on the document that Hamas shows 100 pct allegiance to known as THE HAMAS CHARTER?
at April 11, 2008 12:35 AM
Infidel Pride had an interesting idea - Carter should propose to take Gilad Shalit's place in prison.
But Infidel33 has even better ideas.
By now the jihadis and their enablers must surely have semi-senile Carter filed as the Compleat Useful Idiot, and may have their guard down a little. Surely SOMEBODY can figure out how to make use of that? Carter himself doesn't need to know a thing...let him go bleating and baa-ing into the jihadis' strongholds all he likes..
A pity he's so blind: were he to repent of his folly and wickedness, he'd be able to use all that Useful Idiot/ Dhimmi street cred he's built up by now, to pull an Ehud (Judges 3: 15-26).
