"They should not turn me into a Salman Rushdie"

Malaysian opposition leader gets death threats for saying that Malaysia should not become an Islamic state. "‘Killing me not going to solve problems,’" from ExpressIndia (thanks to Nicolei):

Kuala Lumpur, April 27: An ethnic-Indian Opposition leader has claimed that he has received a death threat for resisting calls to declare multi-ethnic Malaysia an Islamic state.

Karpal Singh, Democratic Action Party (DAP) national chairman, said he has not insulted Islam and he should not be ‘turned into a Salman Rushdie’.

Singh, who on Saturday filed a police complaint in Penang state against a death threat made against him on a web site, said he was just standing up for what was stated in the country's Constitution-- that Malaysia was a secular state.

"The person who made the threat had alleged that it was permissible under Islam to kill Singh because he allegedly opposed Malaysia being turned into an Islamic state," Bernama news agency reported.

"They should not turn me into a Salman Rushdie," Singh, who has been criticised in blogs, said....

"Killing me is not going to solve the problems faced by PAS," Singh said referring to the Islamic party.

"What I have been against and will continue to be against is attempts by Islamic party PAS to turn this country into an Islamic state," he was quoted as saying by local media....

One has to wonder whether or not advocating against Sharia is creating "mischief in the land"...and therefore punishable by death.

What a vile belief system.

Well the normal usual peaceful reactions by Muslims.
The so called religion of peace really knows how to spread peace. A couple death threats, a few bombings , a few beheadings, mass riots, mass protests. Wow, a lot of work and look at the sorry state of affairs in most of the UMMAH. Not only that but many of majority Muslims areas are in western countries are becoming dangerous zones for jihadi activities. Islam is bad news.

The American government should make clear to the government of Malaysia that it will hold the Malaysian government responsible for the safety of Mr. Singh, and also for adhering to the Constitution's guarantee (breached by the Bumiputra system, a disguised Jizyah tax on non-Muslims) that Malaysia would be a "secular" state.

And it should also make clear that not only tourism would suffer, and diplomatic relations, but also trade. And American businesses would be discouraged from continuing to set up shop in Malaysia. There are many other places now to do so. Mexico. China. India. Malaysia is not needed. Malaysia is dispensable.

Malaysia is doomed to become a hard-core Islamist state of the worst order-- and it really isn't far from being that anyway.

There is no being partially or wholly Muslim, even for Malaysia (no mosque there is going to allow it, for one thing).

With Islam, once you are in it for a penny, then you are in it for a pound(ing).

Hugh, your presumption is that the American government actually has the backbone and will to challenge the internal prerogatives of an ostensible Muslim "ally"...one not currently dependent upon American largess or military protection.

You're correct to advocate the policy recommendations as a matter of point and principle. We both know they have not a chance in hell of being implemented, regardless of the fate of Mr Singh. Short of mass killings and a refugee crises, Bush and his successor (whoever that may be) will be preoccupied with far greater problems around the world than Malaysia's subversion of its own Constitution.

Poor Mr. Singh. He understands 100% now what Islam is all about.

Now how did the student get the idea that it is "halal" legal to kill the member of Parliament because of his opposition to the sharia rule as envisioned by PAS?

How many more Muslims in Malaysia share his sentiments?

Student apologises over Karpal death threat

008/04/29
JOHOR BARU: An 18-year-old college student yesterday apologised to DAP national chairman Karpal Singh for posting a death threat against him on a website hosted by Pas Johor Baru.
The student, accompanied by his father and Johor Baru Pas representative, turned up at the Johor Baru (South) district police headquarters yesterday afternoon and admitted that he was responsible for posting the death threat.

Police recorded a statement from the student and released him.

The death threat had been part of the brickbats hurled at Karpal following allegations that he was a bigot for continuously opposing the formation of an Islamic state.

The student also went to the Johor Baru DAP office and met DAP Johor deputy chairman Norman Fernandez.

He handed over a letter of apology for Karpal to Fernandez.

Fernandez said in the student's handwritten letter, he claimed that he was not aware of the implication of posting the death threat.

"He expressed remorse for his action and promised that he'll not post any more offensive messages on the Internet.

"The student, who is from a humble background, hopes that Karpal will withdraw the police report he had lodged at the Penang state police headquarters on Saturday," Fernandez said.

Penang police had transferred the case to the Johor Baru police headquarters as the death threat had been posted here.

Following the media publicity surrounding the death threat, Pas had apologised to Johor DAP for allowing the comment to be posted on its website.

The party had also apologised for the incident in a statement posted on the website, pasjohorbahru.com, on Saturday.

It had also removed the death threat.

Pas Johor commissioner Datuk Dr Mahfodz Mohamad had also stressed that the comment did not reflect Pas' stand.

Is Karpal Singh a Hindu or a Sikh name?

Good on him for blowing the whistle on Islamification.

And good that, for the moment, to judge from the update posted by 'nicolei', he has gotten away with it and the Muslims have had to employ some taqiyya to smooth things over.

But let us all remember that ANY and EVERY attempt to prevent, criticise or protest against the advance and the domination of Islam, protests such as Mr Singh's outspoken statements that he does not want Malaysia to be turned into an Islamic state, will be viewed by pious, purist Muslims as 'oppression', 'injustice', 'persecution' and 'mischief in the land', deserving of the severest forms of punishment.

Considering that PAS really needs DAP and PKR support to form coalition (opposition) governments, this is truly hubris of the first order.

It's not that Karpal Singh didn't know. He knows jolly well. I have a feeling DAP is about to poke and prod and generally make life far more illuminating, even for their coalition partners.

Anyways, Robert, why are you sourcing this story from India? It did come out in local papers here, after all.

Hugh: The Bumiputra system may have very well been intended to be like that, but we can game the system, you know. The Orang Asli, Iban, Kadazan, Bidayuh and other 'indigenous' groupings (most of whom are substantially Christian) can get the same Bumiputra benefits.

pythagoras: Chill, dude. I'm here and I do not see incipient signs of irreversible magnitude. Major irritances, mass stupidity and general snafuing, yes. Becoming hard coe Islamist state, when it's the 40% of NON-Muslims who're powering the economy, and can exercise their 'get-the-hell-out-of-here' card, not so much. The recent elections proved s much.

Further, the number of Malay 'secret Christians' is not small. Nor insignificant. There's hope yet.

PIMF: hard-core, oops. And, it should be "...proved as much."

Anybody with a Singh attached to his name somewhere had a Sikh background. Or a Punjabi one, anyway. Although Gurmit Singh (the S'porean who plays Phua Chu Kang in the same-titled Singaporean sitcom) is reputedly Christian, so you can't really say.

"Killing me is not going to solve any problems".

Famous last words... at least in the Muslim world.
