Pakistan: Jihadists ban mobile phone ringtones

"Many retailers had started offering phones pre-loaded with 'jihadi' ringtones, but this did not seem enough to appease the militants."

See? Sharia can be adapted to modern situations! "Islamic Militants Ban Mobile Phone Ringtones," from Cellular-News:

Islamic militants in Pakistan's tribal areas, which border Afghanistan have issued a decree banning music from mobile phone ringtones and vehicles in tribal areas of the country. A spokesman for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, Maulana Faqir Mohammed said, the they would not allow commuters to play music in their cars or use musical ringtones on mobile phones.
He warned that offenders would be punished according to Shariah laws.
Maulana Faqir Mohammed has been an outlaw in the region due to his reported close contact with Taliban and al-Qaeda elements. He has however been disowned by the tribal elders, who in 2006 - following local traditions - burnt down his house as a signal of disapproval of his activities and warned him to surrender to the authorities.
This is not the first time that Taliban leaders have tried to clamp down on music in their areas - and a wave of attacks on mobile phone stores in North Waziristan was carried out last October to stop them selling music capable phones.
The shop-owners said at the time that they had received several letters, asking them not to sell mobile phones pre-loaded with 'musical' ring tones. Many retailers had started offering phones pre-loaded with 'jihadi' ringtones, but this did not seem enough to appease the militants.

First mobile phone ringtones, then Barbi dolls, then Spiderman comics.................will the evil efforts of the decadent West ever end? Islam must defend itself from these daily "attacks". Jihad! Jihad!

I am irresistibly reminded of a passage from C S Lewis's satire "The Screwtape Letters: from a Senior to a Junior Devil" -

Screwtape rages because his nephew's 'temptee' has been allowed to visit a Christian household:

'the whole house and garden is one vast obscenity. It bears a sickening resemblance to the description one human writer made of Heaven: 'the regions where there is only life and therefore all that is not music is silence'.

'Music and silence - how I detest them both! How thankful we should be that ever since our Father [the devil] entered Hell...no square inch of infernal space and no moment of infernal time has been surrendered to either of these abominable forces, but all has been occupied by Noise - Noise, the grand dynamism, the audible expression of all that is exultant, ruthless and virile - Noise which alone defends us from silly qualms, despairing scruples and impossible desires.

'We will make the whole universe a noise in the end. We have already made great strides in this direction as regards the Earth.

'The melodies and silences of Heaven will be shouted down in the end. But I admit we are not yet loud enough, or anything like it. Research is in progress. Meanwhile *you, disgusting little - [here the MS breaks off]

'In the heat of composition I find that I have inadvertently allowed myself to assume the form of a large centipede. I am accordingly dictating the rest to my secretary...'.

"The melodies and silences of Heaven will be shouted down in the end."

Maulana Faqir Mohammed, waging jihad in order to stifle even the tiniest tinkle of music, the ringtone on a mobile phone, sounds like he'd fit right in with Screwtape and the other devils!

- By the way: (Mr Spencer, please correct me if I've got this wrong) I have just done a quick flick through the N Dawood translation of the Quran and I could not find the words 'music', 'sing' or 'song', anywhere, though I understand that there are one or two passages - Surah 17:64 'voice' [of angels or jinn] and 31:6 - 'idle talk' or 'a frivolous tale' - which are interpreted as referring to music and singing [negatively, not positively, as things used by jinn or Unbelievers to lead the Muslims astray; they are cited to support the view that music is haraam, forbidden].

None of the Quranic descriptions of paradise mention music and/ or singing - whereas St John's visions of heaven in the book of Revelations are full of song. St John's Gospel tells us that Jesus and the Disciples sang; Luke tells us that Mary sang.

The suppression of music in Islam (a complete ban on its use in liturgy; a suspicion and suppression, to varying degrees, of its practice in daily life) is one of the major divides between Islam and practically every other known human civilisation.

For the instruction of any first-time visitors to this site, here is what one of the Hadith (traditions) says about Music:

- Hadee's-e-Qudsi 19:5 (Ahmad) The Prophet said that Allah commanded him to destroy all the musical instruments, idols, crosses and all the trappings of ignorance [i.e jahiliyya].

Then, in Bukhari, one of the most authoritative Hadith collections, there's *this* negative statement about future corruption of the Muslim society:
`There will be people of my Ummah who will seek to make lawful fornication, wine-drinking and the use of ma`aazif ( musical instruments ).'

There are NO positive statements; and the handbook of Islamic law, 'Reliance of the Traveller', states unequivocally that musical instruments of all types are unlawful. Even, it appears, the warble of a mobile phone ringtone.
