"Under the Criminal Code of Canada, a hate crime is committed to intimidate, harm or terrify an entire group of people to which the victim belongs. The victims are targeted for who they are, not because of anything they have done."
Then, the "hate crime" allegations certainly fall short for a cartoon that was making fun of the behavior of two individuals. Also note the absence of the word "offend" from that definition. "Newspaper cartoon a hate crime, Islamic group claims," from CBC News, May 8:
Police in Halifax are investigating a complaint about a political cartoon that some members of a local Islamic group claim is a hate crime.
The cartoon, published April 18 in the Chronicle Herald newspaper, depicts a woman in a burka holding a sign that reads, "I want millions," and she says, "I can put it towards my husband's next training camp."
The cartoon by Bruce MacKinnon is a reference to Cheryfa MacAulay Jamal, a woman from Nova Scotia whose husband was arrested in 2006 in an anti-terrorism raid. Qayyum Abdul Jamal was released from jail after charges against him were stayed on April 15.
Zia Khan, director of the Centre for Islamic Development in Halifax, said the cartoon goes beyond what can be considered free speech.
"You would not put a native American Indian with feathers and say I need money in order to cull white people's heads. You wouldn't do that. This would be libellous," he said.
A false analogy. The cartoon is ridiculing two people for their demands for compensation following a terrorism investigation. More on that below.
Khan's group called police on April 21. He said the group also filed a complaint with the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission.
Under the Criminal Code of Canada, a hate crime is committed to intimidate, harm or terrify an entire group of people to which the victim belongs. The victims are targeted for who they are, not because of anything they have done.
Dan Leger, the Herald's director of news content, said the cartoon does not take aim at all Muslims.
"The whole purpose of that cartoon was to comment on the outrageous demands of this individual for compensation long before any hearing into her case had ever been held," he said.
In an interview with the Herald before the cartoon ran, Jamal said she wanted to sue the federal government for what her family has gone through and told the reporter, "I want millions," Leger noted.
"[MacKinnon] depicted her exactly the way she looks and used her own words, and that's the genius of cartooning that you're able to do that," he said.
Leger said he first heard of the Islamic group's concerns when the newspaper was contacted by police.

Litigation jihad.
That's what you get with hate-crime laws and unelected officials that conduct a fake human rights circus. Ezra Levant and Mark Steyn have got first hand experience. Just like the 2 pastors in Melbourne who read from the Koran.
The creeps use our laws against us.

People here in Indonesia ask me why I left Canada. Leftard judges just love to throw away taxpayer's dollars to appease "victim" minorities. First it was the Sikhs and now it's the Muslims. I blame former NDP MP Svend Robinson for a lot of what is wrong with Canada now (him and Pierre Trudeau). He spent most of time trying to be controversial to be in the spotlight and feed his ego. His push for hate crime laws to protect himself and homosexual friends from any kind of persecution or opposition has backfired on Canada as minorities were included in the laws and Muslims of course, take full advantage of this. Until these laws are fixed and the Human Wrongs Commission is disbanded, Canadian taxpayers are going to have to continue to shell out to nutjobs and leeches.
If I were still in Canada, I would definitely be in jail for expressing my opinions. Absolutely no doubt. I'd rather be here in Indonesia where I have more freedom to do things and speak my mind (except maybe stand in front of a mosque on Friday at 12.00 and start shouting "Muhammad was pedophilic, raping, plundering terrorist!!" There might be a few problems with that)

" "I want millions," and she says, "I can put it towards my husband's next training camp."
Muslims really hate it when the Infidels know the truth.
""The whole purpose of that cartoon was to comment on the outrageous demands of this individual for compensation long before any hearing into her case had ever been held,""
Muslims hate the truth and will try to discredit it.

Amazing how sensitive Muslims are ; but not when they publish "cartoons" about Jews in their media and preach hatred and violence from their mosques.

"You would not put a native American Indian with feathers and say I need money in order to cull white people's heads."
Yeah, there's a really big problem with Native American Scalp Terrorists right now.
They have hijacked a number of Covered Wagons and run them into the local Feed and Grain stores, scattering the chickens.
Six of their Medicine Men snuck aboard wagon trains and scared people with their war dances.
I think they are hiding at Little Bighorn.
The Federal Government has sent General Custer's troops to round them up.
No, wait that was LAST CENTURY! (actually over a century ago)
Nevermind.

Bigwhiteinfidel makes reference to the unintended consequences of the policies of Svend Robinson and Pioerre Trudeau. Unintended consequences can be found everywhere....
Pres. Johnson's 'Great Society' (i.e., welfare) produced many, most related to the endemic pathologies afflicting inner-city, minority communities where the work ethic was effectively destroyed. But one unintended consequence that is rarely (if ever) cited is the fact that welfare programs inadvertently made the US dependent upon illegal labor.
Formerly, American citizens were willing to do just about any job save for lettuce-picking and other back-breaking agricultural labor. But after welfare was instituted in the mid sixties, an entire tier (entry level) of service sector jobs was no longer wanted by those who preferred the poverty and idleness of welfare to the poverty and rigors of minimum-wage work.
Enter the millions from south of the border.
We will have a Spanish-speaking majority by 2075. Should Mexico ever achieve a level of stability and affluence comparable to the USA, the reconquista of the American Southwest that is now theoretical will become an irresistible movement championed by tens of millions.

Real offensive, aye?
We live about 45 minutes away from Halifax. I have often smugly congratulated myself on our move from multi-culti obsessed Ontario to Nova Scotia, which is still very much an anglo area. It makes me sick to see this BS coming to this beautiful province.

Canada, in terms of Islamization is somewhere middle way, between Europe and U.S. The process is helped by some factors:
1 The sickening multiculturalism that is shoved in our faces at every step. Our kids are educated to love multiculturalism and if you try to explain that some cultures are better than others, people just go “liberal” on you (you’re racist, xenophobe etc).
2. The increasing love for liberal/democratic ideas. Any conservative government is by definition bad, Canadian mass media favors the “liberal” values. You can always see slightly favorable articles referring to idiots like Stephane Dion or some socialist NDP but you will have a hard time finding something related to Ezra Levant or Mark Steyn. The Canadian presence in Afghanistan is always questioned; words like Jihad or Islam are "avoided". I saw articles re. to Israel shutting off the electricity in Ghaza but there was not a word of why. The emphasis was of course on the poor Palestinians who were left in the dark.
3. As a consequence of point 2, the atheism and the continuous rejection of Christian values creates a very good terrain for seeds of Islamic crap (“Oh! Quran=Book of God, eh? How interesting! Religion of Peace, eh? How nice!”).
4. There's also the almighty dollar: a traditional Canadian-Italian town (Vaughan) agreed few years ago to have a great mosque built (Ahmadyyia whatever). Now, an entire "Peace Village" is being built near by - of course, this "Peace Village" is a Muslim neighborhood. You would say "why you're against this?" Well, because the mosque is organizing already sessions of dawa: "The Purpose of Life", "Peace For All". But if you ask the same Ahmadyyia why all terrorists are muslims or how can they 'unite' all religions under Quran, they are quite silent.
If the current status quo goes on, Canada will quickly catch up with Europe.

Another false analogy is that American Indians are not at war with the US or the Western cultures of Europe. Arab and Muslim jihadis are.
It is okay for a newspaper or any media to poke fun at the enemy. No free speech violation as far as that goes. Fire away with humor all you want. The jihadis had made themselves, and Islam by association, fair game. Not a religion. So the suit should be thrown out of court.

I'll put a somewhat positive spin on this story. The more that inoffensive and legitimate issues are prosecuted before the various human rights commissions, the quicker they will be either abolished or severely curtailed and relegated back to their intended use. Hard as it is to believe, the Macleans case has united such disparate groups as The Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star (often referred to as "the Red Star"), PEN, Alan Borovoy (an original founder of the HRCs) and Rex Murphy who writes for the Globe and has a weekly commentary on the CBC national news.

The love for multiculturalism in Canada is better characterized by "obsession". The media here is heavily biased towards Muslims and third world culture. The travesties that were the trials of Steyn and Levant were hardly visible in the papers (except the National Post, for one). Par for the course in Canada.

I KNOW THIS COMMENT FALLS ON DEAF EARS ON THIS HATE SITE BUT HERE GOES!!
As a Canadian Muslim I can't say how much I disagree with this approach of trying to label things as a "hate crimes: in my opinion a hate crime is an act of violence committed against an individual due to their ethnicity or religious views.
I understand the hurt and pain caused by villifying a community and the fact is there is alot of anger misdirected at the entire Islamic community at this time. Most of it is a kind of knee jerk reaction to whats happening but some of it more sinister in its approach.
Still the amount of ignorance on both sides is alarming...
Muslims should know this stuff (court action) is fuel for the Islamophobes and Canadians should ask if they want these intolerant people burning the social bridges between our communities

Okay, I'm annoyed now. Enough is enough.
END "GROUP RIGHTS" NOW.
END "HATE SPEECH/HATE CRIME" LAWS NOW. If it takes making it legal again to shout "Fire!" in a crowded theater just for malice, so be it.
The greater danger to society is in NOT being able to speak the truth... to be forced to shut up and "tolerate the intolerable" due to SOMEBODY ELSE's intolerance.
NO MORE PANDERING TO "MUSLIM SENSITIVITY". Our society, our culture, our way of life is GOOD. (Not just "nice", but GOOD: a moral valuation.) We have the most tolerant, generous, creative, and fair civilization that has ever existed on this planet. If immigrants can't cope in our society, can't adjust to the rights and responsibilities of living and working here, don't want their children to assimilate and share our culture, they need to go. (We could establish a "Get the hell out" fund for immigrants who just can't seem to adjust: it would provide FREE one-way tickets for their whole family back to Boondock-istan.)

Now that I got that off my chest, I think these links

http://antiprotester.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_archive.html
can shed some light on the contentious Middle Eastern mindset.
The author speaks about Iraq, but the claims of victimhood, the blustering protests of "you're taking advantage of me", the flat-out lies they use to establish a scenario in which they can gain some advantage or claim compensation for supposed grievances, is fairly common to the region as a whole.
This agitprop of the cartoon being "hateful" is just posturing-for-presumed-advantage, and should be treated like your 4-year-old's nighttime battles: "Mommy, Daddy: Billy just hitted me!" "No, I did NOT! Mom, she's fibbing!" A vague adult response (equivalent to "Mmm-Hmm -- are you in your jammies and did you brush your teeth yet, kids?") is all these people need from us as well.

we know a hatecrime when we see one... that's we go on terror camps!
we have the monopoly on hate round here.... who else doesn't act to stop suicide bombers...
and so on....

Adio,
You claim this is a "hate site." I challenge you to provide one example of any article or comment posted by Robert, Hugh, or Marisol that fits that description.
Actually, this site exposes hate, the hatred that is in Islamic doctrine and which is believed by hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide.
In Islam, hatred is an essential core feature of the doctrine and is a way of life, as the examples below illustrate:
http://www.islamicawakening.com/viewarticle.php?articleID=487
"The Islaamic Concept of al-Walaa' wal-Baraa.'
by Khalid El-Gharib
[Excerpts]
"As regards walaa' (allegience), it is manfesting sincere love and help for Allaah, and for His Prophets, and for the Believers. Whereas baraa' (enmity) is manifesting enmity and dissociation from falsehood and its people. And these matters are actually from the most fundamental issues of faith (eemaan)."
[And from the Koran] "Indeed there is for you an excellent example in the Prophet Ibraaheem and those with him, when they said to their people: Indeed we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allaah; we have rejected you, and there has arisen between us and you enmity and hatred, until you believe and worship Allaah alone." [Soorah al-Mumtahanah 60:4].
Also see this next source for the same general view of Al Wala' Wal Bara' (Love and Hate for Allah's Sake). Excerpts:
--“But what does this love and enmity exactly mean? Loving for the sake of Allah means to love Allah and to show loyalty to Him by following His Shariah. It means to love all that is good and permissible in the Quran and Sunnah. This type of love requires one to defend Allahs deen and to preserve it. It is to love those who are obedient to Allah and to defend and assist them. These are the party of Allah. Enmity for the sake of Allah signifies showing anger towards those who oppose Allah, His Messenger (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam), His deen, and the believers. It is to struggle and fight against them in order to uphold and spread the way of Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu alaiyhi wa sallam).”
--“Al wala wal bara aims to purify the society and rid the people of all vices. For example, we are required to oppose the way of the disbelievers. One of their habits is wasting their time in pursuing their own material desires. A Muslim who does not act upon al wala wal bara will imitate this habit and therefore become neglectful of his duties to Allah. This will lead to a corrupt person, who will end up raising a corrupt family, which will corrupt the community in whole.”
”If we look at the situation today in Afghanistan, how many Muslims today are willing to leave their worldly pursuits and come to the aid of Islam and their Muslim brothers and sisters and fight for Allahs cause against His and our enemies? How many of them will act upon al wala wal bara, which is called for today? The religious situation of the Muslims of today is very pitiful and sad and the answer is that only a handful will run out to assist Allah and the faithful believers.”--
Quran:
35:39. "He it is Who made you rulers in the land; therefore whoever disbelieves, his unbelief is against himself; and their unbelief does not increase the disbelievers with their Lord in anything except hatred; and their unbelief does not increase the disbelievers in anything except loss."
21:98. “Surely you and what you worship besides Allah are the firewood of hell; to it you shall come.”
98:6 (Pickthall). "Lo! those who disbelieve, among the People of the Scripture and the idolaters, will abide in fire of hell. They are the worst of created beings."
9:30. "And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah, and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah. That is their saying with their mouths. They imitate the saying of those who disbelieved of old. Allah (Himself) *fighteth against them. How perverse are they!"
*Qatalahumu
4:56. “Lo! Those who disbelieve Our revelations, We shall expose them to the Fire. As often as their skins are consumed We shall exchange them for fresh skins that they may taste the torment. Lo! Allah is ever Mighty, Wise.”
76:3-4: "Surely We have shown him the way: he may be thankful or unthankful. Surely We have prepared for the unbelievers chains and shackles and a burning fire."
40:70-74. "Those who deny the Scripture and that wherewith We send Our messengers. But they will come to know, When carcans are about their necks and chains. They are dragged Through boiling waters; then they are thrust into the Fire. Then it is said unto them: Where are (all) that ye used to make partners (in the Sovereignty) Beside Allah? They say: They have failed us; but we used not to pray to anything before. Thus doth Allah send astray the disbelievers (in His guidance)."
22:19-22. "These are two disputants who have disputed concerning their Lord. As for the unbelievers, for them garments of fire shall be cut, and there shall be poured over their heads boiling water whereby whatsoever is in their bellies and their skins shall be melted; for them await hooked iron rods; as often as they desire in their anguish to come forth from it, they shall be restored into it, and: 'Taste the chastisement of the burning!'"
48:13. “And so for him who believeth not in Allah and His messenger - Lo! We have prepared a flame for disbelievers.”
7:72. "So We saved him and those who were with him by a Mercy from Us, and We cut the roots of those who belied Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), and they were not believers."
{Al-Jalalayn, 7:72: "So We delivered him, namely, Hūd, and those with him, from among the believers, by a mercy from Us, and We cut the root of those, people, who denied Our signs - that is, We extirpated them - and were not believers (wa-mā kānū mu'minīna is a supplement to kadhdhabū, '[those who] denied')."}
{Ibn Abbas, 7:72: "(And We saved him) i.e. Hud (and those with him by a mercy from Us) for them, (and We cut the root of those who denied Our revelations) We exterminated those who denied Our Scripture and Messenger Hud (and were not believers) those who were destroyed were all disbelievers."}
6:45. “So the roots of the people who did wrong* were cut off. And all the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns, and all that exists).”
*[By being disbelievers, polytheists, etc.]
{Al-Jalalayn, 6:45. "So the last remnant of the people who did evil was cut off, by having them annihilated. Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds, for giving victory to the messengers and destroying the disbelievers."}
{Ibn Abbas, 6:45. "(So of the people who did wrong) who ascribed partners to Allah, they were exterminated through punishment (the last remnant was cut off. Praise be to Allah) say praise and thanks be to Allah, (Lord of the Worlds!) for their extermination."}

'"You would not put a native American Indian with feathers and say I need money in order to cull white people's heads. You wouldn't do that. This would be libellous," he [Zia Khan]said.'
You would if there really were a native CANADIAN (this is Canada, not America, folks) Indian activist who made a point of wearing a feathered headdress every time he appeared in public and openly hated Canada and all non-natives, had suspected close associations with terrorists, and openly sympathized with their goals, although no doubt a few would whinge about "racism" then too. Political cartoonists tell it like they see it. How else is he supposed to represent this lovely ji-hag? All we see of her is a moving black sack with glasses. BlessUSBanIslam laments what he sees in Canada as "The increasing love for liberal/democratic ideas."
Huh? I can understand an American conservative foaming at the mouth at how "liberal" we Canadians are, as the term itself as it is currently understand by his ilk bears no relation whatsoever to its original meaning. But there's something wrong with "democratic" ideas"? That one really stumps me. I mean, I thought even American conservatives were in favour of democracy! Or perhaps he means "big D" Democratic, but we have no party by that name here. We have four (or is it five? I keep losing count) major and a few minor political parties, not just two. I do agree with a lot of what this commenter says about the multiculti/PC insanity afflicting Canada, but to my mind it is anything but "democratic" or "liberal."
