So says French Prime Minister Francois Fillon. But actually it is quite possible that a country could want to join the European Union while its army is occupying the territory of another EU country. And it is also possible, although Fillon has suddenly "recalled" this, that the EU, cowed, defensive, lacking any sense of itself, supine and already half-dhimmified, will agree.
"Turkey: Fillon Recalls French Reasons For 'No' To Accession," from ANSAmed, May 9 (thanks to Insubria):
(ANSAmed) - NICOSIA, MAY 9 - French Prime Minister Francois Fillon, on a work visit in Cyprus, recalled today that his country opposes the accession of Turkey to the EU mainly due to the occupation by the Turkish army of the northern part of the island. The French prime minister told a joint news conference with Cypriot President Demetris Christofias that "it is not possible that a country could want to join the European Union while its army is occupying the territory of another EU country". "The accession of Turkey to the EU is not a good solution," Fillon said adding that "still today there are many obstacles for similar accession. A privileged partnership between the EU and this large country Turkey is a necessary stage". ...

Nice to see the French showing at least a modicum of sanity - unlike our own boss-eyed foreign secretary, David Milliband, who finds the idea of the EU sharing a border with Iraq, Syria and Iran rather exciting.

Why stop at Cyprus? Turks continue to occupy Anatolia and bits of Thrace, which were Greek since prehistory.
That's not very realistic, but at the very least, the Church of Hagia Sophia should be returned to the Ecumenical Patriarch, and those ridiculous minarets and calligraphic medallions demolished...
That right there would be a huge boost to Turkey, as Orthodox pilgrims would flock there. And who among them would openly accuse Turkey of being intolerant?

Here's a recent posting at staringattheview.blogspot.com
A Different Way of Thinking
Today my Arabic instructor was complaining about French president Sarkozy's unwillingness to allow Turkey to enter the European Union. Sarkozy had apparently commented that it was inconceivable that Europe could border Iraq and Syria. My instructor noted that in the past Muslim rulers had been proud of the fact that the Islamic Empire extended from China to Morocco. He thought that Europe should equally take pride in the concept of Europe's becoming larger by the entry Turkey into the Union.
I replied that it was possible that one reason Europe was reluctant to allow Turkey into the European Union was that Europeans enjoy personal freedoms that Turks do not. Europeans, for example, have the freedom to choose whatever religion they want. A Christian European can choose to become a Muslim, Buddhist or atheist, and no-one cares. Turks do not have that freedom.
My instructor saw it differently. He said, "But we Muslims believe in all the prophets. We believe in the Jewish prophets, and we believe in Jesus. I am as Jewish as any Jew and as Christian as any Christian. So it is impossible that someone who believes in all the prophets would want to change or could be allowed to change."
"Wa hakatha kanat nihayat al-hawar" (And that was the end of the discussion).

Turkey must not be allowed to enter the EU. If course the idiot socialists who think they are creating a utopia will bow (literally) the Turkey request.
