The second reported honor killing in Jordan in less than a week. "Jordan charges man with killing sister suspected of having extramarital affair," from the Associated Press, May 12:
A Jordanian judicial official says the country's state prosecutor has charged a man with premeditated murder who is suspected of drowning his 22-year-old sister for having an extramarital affair.
The official says the unidentified woman's brother beat her with the help of his family Saturday and then took her to the Dead Sea, where he drowned her.
The official says the state prosecutor also charged the woman's parents and another brother Monday with assisting in the murder by knowing about it and for beating the woman before she died. He says they carried out their suspected actions after seeing an unidentified man leaving the slain woman's house.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

"It is not a democracy when a man can talk about politics without anyone threatening him. Democracy is when a woman can talk of her lover without anyone killing her."

Besides the death of the woman, the most disturbing thing about that article is that it doesn't name anyone. Not the woman. Not the man. Not the official. No one. I expect we'll be seeing more of the same.

When Queen Rania came on youtube to "dispell" stereotypes I wanted to throw up. In her own country honor killings happen weekly!
Dispell what, Queen? That you and your husband, privileged to think UNLIKE muslims can put some things aside now and again?
The whole thing is a big lie. The devil is truly in the details. It makes me sad, but we won't quit fighting until the truth is known about what that devil twists

You can do something about it here:
http://www.reformislam.org/honorcide/
STOP HONORCIDE!
The STOP HONORCIDE! campaign was launched on Mother's Day 2008. The goal of the campaign is to prosecute honorcides to the fullest extent of the law. We want honorcide to be classified as a hate crime and we advocate for every existing hate crime legislation to be amended to include honorcide.
If you wish to support STOP HONORCIDE!, please send us an email with your name, title (if applicable) and a short statement of support.
If you would like to lobby your elected official(s) to amend current hate crime legislation to include honorcide, you may use the letter below or you can draft your own letter.

Dear Title Name,
(As your constituent,) I urge you to amend name or number of the statute law to include honorcide. Honorcide is a heinous crime practiced in backwards societies. Honorcide or honor killing is a murder of a female by her male family member(s), when a female is believed to have brought dishonor on her family. This so-called "dishonor" includes, among other things, refusing an arranged marriage, being the victim of a sexual assault, seeking a divorce, dating a non-Muslim, or simply refusing to wear a hijab. It is appalling that in twenty-first century America honorcides are still taking place. But what is even more appalling is that honorcide is deemed to be acceptable by members of some religious and ethnic communities. We must put a stop to it. Any form of gender discrimination, especially honorcide, has no place in any civilized society, but especially not in America.
Please introduce the bill to amend name or number of the statute law to include honorcide.
Sincerely,
Signature

"woman's parents and another brother"
Islamic apologists will say that wife abuse is a problem in most cultures, however where else in the world does one's own parents kill you? Or one's brothers? All for honour.
Muslims must really question why the inherent dignity of women in families is valued less than a families honour. What is ironic, is that I consider my honour to be of less value than the life of this woman who is a stranger to me. But, alas, I am just a humble Christian.
Why don't Muslims just disown these women? We Christians would take them in and call them sister.

Would have been better if she drowned him.
Yep, where's queen Rania when you need her?

The Texas honor killer, Yaser Said the murderer of his daughters, Amina and Sarah is still on the loose, most likely being hid by his Muslim family,
They are all from Egypt so I’m sure they “feel his pain” and can’t do enough to help him now that he restored their “family honor”.
He rapes them at age 7 and 8 and he murders them for not wanting “Muslim” boy friends and not wanting to marry a Muslim man.(they had Christian boyfriends)
I guess they were thinking about their future daughter’s, who, thanks to Islam’s code of “honor” will never be.
It is enough to make you sick.

Selling children into forced marriage to first cousins and uncles, murdering their own children, "husbands" raping at will, quarantining women in home, dressing in face-covering sacks, beating wives, polygamy, baby-making machines, keeping women illiterate. This culture sounds as bad as the Austrian incest dad. If he was raping his niece, it would be all legal and normal in Islam.

"With the help of his family."
Normal families defend their children to the death.
Muslim "families" beat, shoot, strangle, explode, and drown them.
How long will it take before we can all admit that there is something basically, seriously, and inhumanly wrong with people who voluntarily practice Islam?

There's this really, really big and popular forum where someone occasionally posts a thread about an honor killing or similiar event, and people always seem genuinely shocked that such a thing could happen (and eventually someone says "well we're no better than them because women are murdered in our culture too!"). I've read JW for many years now, and I've come to regard news of honor killings in much the same way I regard the weather report, so it always suprises me how people really have no idea how often these things happen. If someone told them that honor killings are fairly routine even in the West, they would never believe it.

The father has established himself as a 'good' muslim in the eye's of the ummah. His honor restored, his faith in Allah respected. Not all muslims find the occasion in their lives to make this ritual human sacrifice to Allah. Those who do are elevated. When the dust settles they probably become imams.

"He says they carried out their suspected actions after seeing an unidentified man leaving the slain woman's house."
In other words, they really didn't even know for sure that the woman was having an affair. Apparently just being in the presence of an unrelated male is all the evidence that is needed.
Could have been the Maytag repair man leaving after a repair call. And he wonders why none of his female customers ever calls again.

Gramfan: Although I feel that honor killings is about the worst of islam, expanding hate crime legislation is not the answer (particularly as it applies to muslim countries). Here in the U.S. murder is a capital offense. Making it a hate crime doesn't make it worse than "run of the mill" murder. Having hate crime legislation on the books opens the door for college students be sent to prison for putting a koran in the toilet and passengers on an airplane complaining about muslims acting suspicious.
It leads to thought crimes and free speech suppression. If you stretch it far enough (and it's not beyond the ACLU to do so), you could actually argue that prosecuting the father for practicing his religion is suppression of his freedom of religion and therefore a hate crime in itself.
Just my two cents.

walterc: there are multiple hate crime legislations on the books as it is. Amending them to include honorcide will shed much needed light on the issue. If you believe that every murderer in the U.S. gets capital punishment, you should come down to Earth and check your facts. As for misapplication of hate crime legislation to prosecute putting the Koran in the toilet and passengers on an airplane complaining about Muslims acting suspicious, we just don't see how amending existing laws to include honorcide would have such effect.
