Kuwaiti women are not currently required by law to wear headscarves. However, when women were granted the right to run for office in 2005, some officials inserted a clause stipulating that the women abide by "Islamic law." As we noted here, the details of that clause were never specified, providing a device legislators can call upon at any point where they feel the women need to be put in their place.
An update on this story. "Kuwait to investigate women min over hijab," from Agence France-Presse, June 1:
KUWAIT CITY - Kuwait's new conservative-controlled parliament voted on Sunday to refer the case of two women ministers not wearing the hijab headscarf to its legal committee to establish if they broke the law.
The vote followed a token walkout by nine Islamist and tribal MPs in protest at the two women's failure to wear the hijab.
Thirty-three MPs voted for the proposal put forward by a number of Islamist and tribal lawmakers during the first session of the parliament that was elected on May 17 in the oil-rich Gulf Arab state.
The proposal was opposed by 21 members, including liberal MPs and cabinet ministers who are ex-officio members of parliament.
The legal committee will now have to establish if the two ministers violated a law that requires women to ‘abide by Islamic regulations while voting or contesting the elections.’
Earlier nine MPs walked out of the chamber in protest against the two women ministers after members of the new cabinet began taking the oath.
One, Islamist Jaber Al Azemi, told reporters that the two ministers violated the law and that this was a challenge by the government to parliament.

I don't know about you, but I can hardly wait to see it finally and definitively resolved, right here in front of the world, whether the hijab is voluntary under Islam, or Shariah mandated. Go Kuwait! This is win-win, whichever stance you take.

I wonder if the women were properly escorted by a male relative during sessions of parliament. If not, that could be another violation of Sharia that could be used to prosecute them.

The continuing saga of Muslim men's "obsession" over what Muslim women wear...Heaven forbid if one is not properly covered up while casting a vote.

The men wear their white DRESSES, they like gold embroidery on it, what is the name of the head coverings called for men??? In Kuwait, the men wear such a high WHITE covering. Watch them on you tube, they are so arrogant, it blows you away.
Shopping only with a male relative. The Kuwaites and Arabs who are in Switzerland are so arrogant too, feel them self above working. How they make themselves disliked in the West or hated.
With all the hatred towards the West and the U.S.
I wonder why are they coming over?
Getting all the free benefits from the countries they are going too and how fast do they know what they can get for free. They will sometimes saying, I have a right to that, it is in your LAW. I wonder how much money a year do they collect from the U.S., Canada, Australia, U.K.,
Europe, Scandanavian countries.
I imagine adding that up, you might about to have a heart attack.
