This is the same absurdity as paying the Muslims for the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, which some countries like India do.

I know in India similar dhimmi response by the Indians millions of money to Muslims to go on haj however non for the Hindus to go on pilgrimages. Most Hindu temples are run the state and taxed and most Mosques in India are not taxed and given money to operate. It is shameful this is the continued jizya and special status given to Muslims while many non Muslims in Islamic states are persecuted, killed their places of worship are destroyed.

I don't subscribe to the theory that every cylindrical object created by man is some kind of phallic symbol. However, now having learned about the relentlessly mysogyist, sex-obsessed, and dominating supremacist doctrines of Islam, I have no doubt that minarets are indeed phallic.

The minarets stand proudly, proclaiming "Screw you Australia! Screw you infidels and your infidel laws and your filthy society! See the power of Islam! Feel the power of Islam! You will submit!"

So, in the spirit of submission (from the viewpoint of the Mohammedans), some infidels down under have been duped into assisting in the construction of these foul monuments. I think it would be highly appropriate to draw an insensitive cartoon right now.

Bit late commenting on this one (the debate has undoubtedly moved on) but I just wanted to add that the South Australian State Government definitely provides funding to churches with historical value: as per the story listed here http://www.ministers.sa.gov.au/news.php?minister=17&portfolio=&search=urgent about $25,000 being given to help renovate a church in the town of Gawler (a few miles north of Adelaide). So, this is just a case of even-handedness, not dhimmitude.
Adelaide's had a chequered history when it comes to preserving old buildings and too many have been lost, so I have no problem with them acting to preserve the mosque.
Of course the mosque does have a tenuous connection to violent jihad in Australia, it was the place of worship for the afgani cameleers who came to Australia in the late 1800's and early 1900's to work camel trains in the outback. When the last Caliph of the Ottoman empire called for a jihad against the British empire during WW1, a couple of the cameleers answered his call by firing a few shots at some govt building or similar (although from what I recall no-one was hurt). As far as I know there is no connection between this old mosque and Adelaide's better known jihadi - David Hicks.
Having said all of that, it doesn't excuse muslim countries from their obligation to provide funding to preserve non-muslim temples/churches etc in their own countries.
