Malaysia: "forum" on conversions to Islam to be held -- but not openly, only in "secret"

Another oxymoron possible only in the Islamic world, since "forums" both connote and denote an open, public space, that includes the people -- ho demos, the essence of democracy. Why all the secrecy, the need to keep things hidden? To keep the story of a Chinese man who, against his family's wishes, who insist he did not convert, was buried as a Muslim? Or the man who tried desperately hard to convert to Christianity but was forbidden (including, of course, with the usual death threats)? Or the woman who never truly converted, but was forced to stay in the fold of Islam? "Not Proper To Hold Conversion To Islam Forum Openly, Says DPM," from MySinchew, August 7:

SUBANG: Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak said it was not proper for Bar Council to hold the forum on "Conversion to Islam" issues openly.

He added it was not proper to hold this forum in Malaysia because it was a sensitive issue.

"If people want to discuss about this issue, it is better to talk about it behind closed doors, but not openly," Najib told reporters after launching the Vista Jet and Skypark Malaysia's Fixed Based Operation (FBO) at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, here Thursday (7 Aug).[...]

The public forum is expected to touch, among other things, on a provision in the Federal Constitution which stipulates that the courts have no jurisdiction on matters which are within the Syariah Courts jurisdiction.

The forum is also expected to discuss on several conversion cases in the country.

Najib insisted that government did not prevent anyone from holding forums because issue discussion was a good phenomenon. However, it was better to discuss sensitive issues behind closed door. (Sin Chew Daily)

I didn't notice a posting on the national geographic channel's INSIDE THE KORAN which was taken in many different lights post first showing on Tuesday 5 August. I was pleased to know that they included Christophe Luxenberg as well as the obvious forgeries and/or changed quranic manuscripts found in Yemen.

For everyone else, there is a showing on Saturday I believe around 1pm EDT. Check your local listings.

Robert & Hugh,

I believe there are ways to legally say an Individual does not believe in Islam anymore.

There must be some aspect of the law to defy rulings in Islam.

I also read that during muhammads conquest, there was a stalemate in war where he asked the followers, those who do not believe in me, you may leave out of islam (but it does not say believe in allah)

Would it be possible to use this as an example to leave islam as islam mandates the blind follow of allah via muhammad, thus making muhammad the king?

Please shed some light in this story.

Murtad (apostasy) in Islam is a very serious issue; usually culminating in your death.

Converts to Islam in Malaysia can get out of it legally, assuming you have the strength of will, tenacity and ability to stand up to physical, emotional and psychological duress.

If you are Malay by birth, getting out of Islam legally is accomplished by getting the hell out of Malaysia, or renouncing Malaysian citizenship - this step is only practicable if you have dual citizenship, which Malaysia does not recognise.

The Syariah Court is supposedly the last arbiter of Islamic law; it has jurisdiction over Muslims only. But the stupidity is, the issue of whether somone is Muslim or not is also relegated to the Syariah Court.

Which does not make any sense at all.
