You know it's bad when, of all things, an Islamic authority asserts you have one too many wives. "Nigerian faces death for 86 wives," from the BBC, August 21:
Nigeria's Islamic authority has told the man who has 86 wives to choose only four and repent within three days or else he will be sentenced to death.Really, 50 or so should be tops...The Jamatu Nasril Islam (JNI) passed their verdict on Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, according to Sharia law.
This comes two weeks after the Nigerian press and the BBC reported on the case.
Talking to the media then, Mr Abubakar challenged Muslim scholars, saying there is no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than four wives.
However, Mr Abubakar advised other men not to follow his example and marry 86 women.
No limitBased on the following Koranic verse: "Marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one." [4:3]The former teacher and Muslim preacher lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children, and says he is able to cope only with the help of God.
"A man with 10 wives would collapse and die, but my own power is given by Allah. That is why I have been able to control 86 of them," he told the BBC.
Most Muslim scholars agree that a man is allowed to have four wives, as long as he can treat them equally.
But Mr Bello Abubakar told the BBC: "To my understanding the Koran does not place a limit and it is up to what your own power, your own endowment and ability allows.So his point is that, while he should be punished, that punishment might not be all that bad? Perhaps he's relying on his great "stamina"?"God did not say what the punishment should be for a man who has more than four wives, but he was specific about the punishment for fornication and adultery."
Niger is one of the Muslim majority states to have reintroduced Sharia punishments since 2000.Several people have been sentenced to death for adultery by Sharia courts but none of these sentences have been carried out.

If 82 of the 86 are declared to be slave women, then he can have sex with them and is still within his legal limit according to my reading of the Koran.

Really, 50 or so should be tops...Ray, have you tried managing even 1? ;-)

So what does he do every year? Marry?

Based on my perception of his countenance and assessment of his wisdom from his actions and expressed opinions, I suspect Nigeria will have no shortage of manual laborers for generations to come.

Mohammed Bello Abubakar is 84 ... and probably has bad hearing and eyesight.

Assuming that the ratio of the sexes remains steady, and roughly equivalent, in Nigeria (no killing of baby girls as in some countries), then Mr. Abubakar has been selfish indeed. By marrying 86 women, he has deprived 85 fellow Nigerian men of potential wives. 'Taint fair, and 'taint funny, McGee. Some of those looking for love in all the wrong places because of the hoarding Mr. Abubakar may attack Christians in order to kidnap their wives. Or may simply be....antsy. And that antsiness can cause all kinds of violence.
Even advanced Western man has suffered from something like the same deprivation. John Kennedy used to complain, even in the White House that unless he enjoyed each day, with somebody new, his favorite form of recreation, he was sure to get a headache.
Think of how many Excedrin or Extra-Strength Tylenol have had to be downed by poor Nigerians because of the wife-hoarding by Mohammed Bello Abubakar.
He should be ashamed of himself.

And that antsiness can cause all kinds of violence.And assuming that those 85 fellow Nigerians want 4 wives each (if he can have 86, why can't they have 4?), that would mean that potentially, 340 Christian girls in the area had to suffer. But from an Islamic standpoint, Abubakar hasn't been selfish, since he has caused his fellow ummah members to go hunting down Infidel women to be conquered as tilths. Had he married just 1, those 340 women might have gone on to have normal lives, and (horrors of horrors) gone on to marry Christian men.
One thing I forgot to add in my last comment - you thought Larry Flint and Hugh Hefner were bad?

While the rest of the world, most especially the developed world, reduces population growth, Muslims reproduce at an unbridled pace regardless of consequences. Hindus in India are even talking about returning to large families to combat the Muslim demographic growth. Muslims openly declare breeding is a weapon against non-Muslims, as did the Egyptian jihadi commentator recently, recorded by memri.org. The Ayatollah, bin Laden, and Arafat are all on record for this, and it is essentially a cultural doctrine throughout the Muslim world, to hell with the environment. They don't care, they are suicidal and murderous because they have a deadend belief system. Deep down they know this but are too proud--arrogant--to change it.

Well, Mohammed (do as I say, not as I do) didn't stop at four. There are many examples of powerful Islamic leaders with more than four wives. So there is a measure of historic precedent. But since this is a Sharia court, only Allah knows what will happen.

Look, I know it's easy to laugh at this story--I should know, I've been laughing at it. But there is a more serious side to it.
First, I should add that I'm completely disgusted at Abubaker and his talk of "controlling" his 86 wives. I in no way want to give the impression that I am justifying this man's repellant actions. The idea that these dozens of women have anything resembling a "marriage" with Abubaker is ludicrous.
Still, there's a problem when the most populous nation in Africa is letting Shari'ah courts sentence a non-violent 84-year-old man to death.
It's pales beside the sentencing of rape-victim Amina Lawal to death by stoning, but it's still pretty appalling. (Lawal's sentence was later overturned, but only due to intense international pressure).
The BBC seems rather blase on this point, blandly noting that "several people have been sentenced to death for adultery by Sharia courts but none of these sentences have been carried out."
And if Abubaker does agree to jettison all but four of his "wives", what then?
