Update to this story. "Death verdict for man with 80 wives," from SMH.com, August 23:
LAGOS: An Islamic body in Nigeria has issued a death sentence on a man who married 80 women against the maximum of four allowed by Islam, The Guardian reported yesterday.Earlier it was reported that he had 86 wives? Perhaps the shura council decided that six of them were ma malakat aymenkum, that is, concubines?
Jamatu Nasril Islam said in a statement that Mohammadu Bello Masaba from the central Niger state stood condemned to death unless he divorced 76 of the women in four days.Well, at least they're consistent."Unless Masaba repents within four days and take only four wives from the herd he remains condemned to death, according to sharia law," the statement said.
"Any Muslim who married more than the approved number of wives at a time either by mistake or out of ignorance is instructed to choose but only four and ask for Allah's forgiveness," Jamatu Nasril Islam said.

A couple o' things...
1. If his marriages to 76 of his wives aren't valid, why must he formally divorce them?
2. An uglier thought: Does that make 76 of his wives adulteresses, and subject to the death penalty?

Wait a minute, I think this is still fine because muhammad had approx 80 wives at one time.
So I guess he has to divorce 6 wives at the moment.
I think the jihadist are extremely jealous of his outstanding achievement of 86 wives :)

Kill 'em all. That's islam!
Kill him for having more than the four wives allowed by the lecher muhammad, who set no limits for himself and had dozens of wives. Kill the wives for willingly participating in illegal marriage; ignorance of the law is no excuse. They're all guilty and deserve to die.
Islam is misery, hypocrisy, and death, with a few hilarious anecdotes now and then, like this one. They all look perfectly happy to me and islam won't stand for that! Isn't it just too "islamic" that perversion in moderation is fine and dandy (4 wives) but "excessive" perversion is illegal! I love it!
Islam sucks.

If finally carried out, the death sentence would be quite a professional coup for Central Niger State's executioner--just imagine, able to boast, "80 widows with one good whack."

Yes. This:
"A happy number is defined by the following process. Starting with any positive integer, replace the number by the sum of the squares of its digits, and repeat the process until the number equals 1 (where it will stay), or it loops endlessly in a cycle which does not include 1. Those numbers for which this process ends in 1 are happy numbers, while those that do not end in 1 are unhappy numbers."
Such as 1. Such as 86. But not such as 4.

Is this an example of Islamic "women's rights"? Thanks to Allah and his messenger, Mohammed - 76 widows are liberated from their male chauvinist pig of a husband! Are widows the only "liberated" women in Islam? ............hmm, this deserves some thought.

Hugh, There are quite a few happy numbers between 1 and 86, viz. 7, 10, 13, 19, 23, 28, 31, 32, 44, 49, 68, 70, 79. So, maybe this gives the guy some negotiating room if he's convinced that a happy number of wives is required for happiness, but can't quite bring himself to drop all the way back to 1.
I bet with some work and creative interpretation of Qur'anic verses you could find, or manufacture, solid numerological justification for this.
