Netherlands: Christian schools closing for Islamic festival

Reasonable accommodation. "Christian Schools Closing for Islamic Festival," from NIS News, September 23 (thanks to Fjordman):

AMSTERDAM, 23/09/08 - At least two Amsterdam secondary schools with a Christian basis are to close during the Sugar Feast to accede to their Muslim pupils. Various other schools are also doing so, Reformatorisch Dagblad newspaper reported yesterday.

The Calvijn met Junior College in Amsterdam and the Huygens College, also in the capital, are both closing for the Sugar Feast. The Islamic festival marks the end of the Ramadan month of fasting and falls on or around 1 October this year.

The Calvijn met Junior College is closing for two days, and the Huygens College for one. Both are VMBO schools - the lowest level of secondary education - and although they are Christian, their pupils are virtually all immigrants.

The Party for Freedom (PVV) wants clarification from Education Minister Ronald Plasterk in the Lower House today. "This really cannot be allowed," in the view of PVV MP Martin Bosma. "The Netherlands is no Muslim country and will never become one either. We must never give in to the pressure of this ideology, which wants to take over the Netherlands bit by bit."...

Yep.

Sugar Feast? I didn't know Islam had a "Sugar Feast"? Can anyone enlighten me?

"A house divided against itself cannot stand...I do not expect the house to fall, but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other."
"Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new — North as well as South."

Abraham Lincoln, sixteenth U.S. President

What's old is new again. The people in The House of War must decide soon if their house should remain divided. Tic toc.

God bless Bosma. Would that there were more like him.

I am amazed at how religious and observant muslims can be when being absent from school or taking breaks from work is involved.

Yes, God bless Bosma.

"I am amazed at how religious and observant muslims can be when being absent from school or taking breaks from work is involved."

Yes, infidels mustn't attack Muslims during Ramadan, but it's ok for Muslims to attack during Ramadan. Even attacking their fellow Muslims is ok.

But, of course, if Allah has told you that the whole world should submit to you, what else can you do but enforce it, you're only following Allah's words.

"The Calvijn met Junior College in Amsterdam..."

John Calvin must be rolling over in his grave.

I'd like to know if these Christian schools also observe Rosh Hoshana and Yom Kippur. The Jewish holidays are observed in some suburban Boston, USA, public schools.

the muslims are progressing , 1st the schools, then bigger...

from 2005 I found this:

"Emotional reactions
Two papers comment today on an unsuccessful attempt to make Eid-ul-Fitr, the Islamic sugar feast that marks the end of the period of fasting Ramadan an official national holiday here in the Netherlands. The Christian CNV labour federation had proposed replacing Whit Monday, part of the Christian feast of Pentecost, with Eid-ul-Fitr, but in vain, for as De Volkskrant points out, "this gets the prize for the most rapidly withdrawn proposal of the year". The CNV was overwhelmed with "hundreds of often emotional reactions" protesting against the idea.""

Can we close the Kaaba and have a Pork and Beer Festival in Mecca?

Better for your teeth too.

More capitulation in eurostan. It is too late for a finger in the dike this time, and do muslim schools close for Christian or Jewish festivals or holidays? I seriously doubt it, in fact they probaly protest anyway as it is muslim thing to do. Play the victim, then become the antagonist or worse. We all know where this will lead. Not to paradise, gentle readers!

I live in NL and the way this is done, is by scheduling a "Teacher Education Day" on the 24th of September (the end of Ramadan).
No one can object to teachers receiving additional education to better execute their jobs.

What is more frightening, is that teachers were FORCED by the school's boards, to attend iftar gatherings with the muslim community to increase "mutual understanding".
Non-attendance would be punsihed with a poor job-review.

'The Netherlands is no Muslim country and will never become one either'.
This is an aspirational view and has nothing to do with reality. The fact is that the Netherlands is well on its way to become a Muslim country thanks largely to a policy of appeasement and human-rights law which is a fatal combination.

It didn't take Muslims that long to get sharia established in the UK.

Nor did it take long for them to establish their own halal authority and start selling through huge supermarket chains, and presuade Subway, MacDonalds and others to start using halal meat in their products and stores.

Not did it take them long to get their own "Muslim" gravyards arund Christian churches and cathedrals.

I didn't take long for the school where my daughter studies to introduce programes prortecting Islam from criticism and taking them on tours of mosques.

It didn't take long for Muslims to establish their own political parties, lobbying groups and Muslim organizations which promote Islam to our politicians and undermine anything likely to prevent their faith maintaining its position as the most pampered, financed and protected religion on earth.

...Other things take time - but then Muslims have plenty of time. They know Europe and large parts of the world are coming under their influence and power - and we are either watchng them do it or (in the case of government and businesses) actualy helping them.

Muslim youths are angry, frustrated and extremist because they have been mis-educated and de-educated by the British schooling. Muslim children are confused because they are being educated in a wrong place at a wrong time in state schools with non-Muslim monolingual teachers. They face lots of problems of growing up in two distinctive cultural traditions and value systems, which may come into conflict over issues such as the role of women in the society, and adherence to religious and cultural traditions. The conflicting demands made by home and schools on behaviour, loyalties and obligations can be a source of psychological conflict and tension in Muslim youngsters. There are also the issues of racial prejudice and discrimination to deal with, in education and employment. They have been victim of racism and bullying in all walks of life. According to DCSF, 56% of Pakistanis and 54% of Bangladeshi children has been victims of bullies. The first wave of Muslim migrants were happy to send their children to state schools, thinking their children would get a much better education. Than little by little, the overt and covert discrimination in the system turned them off. There are fifteen areas where Muslim parents find themselves offended by state schools.

The right to education in one’s own comfort zone is a fundamental and inalienable human right that should be available to all people irrespective of their ethnicity or religious background. Schools do not belong to state, they belong to parents. It is the parents’ choice to have faith schools for their children. Bilingual Muslim children need state funded Muslim schools with bilingual Muslim teachers as role models during their developmental periods. There is no place for a non-Muslim teacher or a child in a Muslim school. There are hundreds of state schools where Muslim children are in majority. In my opinion, all such schools may be designated as Muslim community schools. An ICM Poll of British Muslims showed that nearly half wanted their children to attend Muslim schools. There are only 143 Muslim schools. A state funded Muslim school in Birmingham has 220 pupils and more than 1000 applicants chasing just 60.

Majority of anti-Muslim stories are not about terrorism but about Muslim culture--the hijab, Muslim schools, family life and religiosity. Muslims in the west ought to be recognised as a western community, not as an alien culture.

Iftikhar

go away, you're spamming, no-one's interested.

Oh, and by the way, if *I* hear of anyone trying to set up an Islamic School in the local council area that *I* inhabit, I will have a great deal to say against it.
