More on this story. "Somali insurgents want to raze non-Muslim places of worship," from the Associated Press, September 30 (thanks to Kyros):
MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) -- Islamists began demolishing an old Roman Catholic church in southern Somalia on Tuesday to replace it with a mosque, and vowed to do the same with all other non-Muslim places of worship they find in the area.
The act -- and the threat -- were the latest show of strength by the growing Islamic insurgency in and around the southern port of Kismayo. Somalia's third-largest city has been in the control of al-Shabab, a powerful Islamist faction, since August.
Sheik Hassan Yakob Ali, a spokesman for al-Shabab, said the city's residents had knocked down a wall of the century-old Italian church, which has not been used for at least 18 years. No one was hurt in the demolition, Ali said.
He said the city administration will finish the demolition job over the next few days and replace the building with a mosque.
"We have demolished a Christian church," Ali told The Associated Press. "And we'll replace it with an Islamic mosque. We will demolish all similar Christian cathedrals and other places of worship for Christians, Buddhists and other religions."
Somalia is a mostly Sunni Muslim country, but it still contains a series of old Catholic churches that are a legacy of its colonial past under Italy. There are no known Buddhist temples in Somalia.
Tuesday's demolition was scheduled to coincide with the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. But it was not the only, or the most violent, attack against the Catholic Church in Somalia.
In 2006, gunmen in Mogadishu shot and killed a 65-year-old Italian nun and her bodyguard. In 1989, the Bishop of Mogadishu, Pietro Salvatore Colombo, was killed at his cathedral in the Somali capital. After the bishop's assassination, the Vatican eliminated the post and now oversees Somalia through neighboring Djibouti....
You might notice there was no mention of the status of the Mogadishu Cathedral. That was destroyed in 1992.

This is pure EVIL. What do you do with evil? You crush the life out of it, so that it dies. You do not let it grow inside of you like a civilizational cancer waiting to chew your bones and devour your children. Simple really when you boil it down.

They often were, in the Middle Ages. Nice to see that Islam's dragged us back there.

What is POTUS/commander-in-chief, who touted his Christian faith for votes, going to do about this?

Please do not interpret anything I say as approval of the filth. But the Catholic cathedral of Mogadiscio never had any business being there. It was an absurdly grandiose building in a country where no Catholic lived, and represented more the ego of the Fascist governor who had it built - De Bono, one of the leaders of the 1922 coup - than any need. Even in the colonial period, it was never more than half-full, being far too large for the needs of the local Italian community. After independence, in 1960, most Italians left, and I am surprised to hear that the Vatican kept this unnecessary and expensive outpost open. With no Catholics to speak of, it was little more than a target.

Ok demolish churches but dont forget to come to Infidel Canada and claim refugee status and then live on welfare for rest of your lives. Also do not forget to immigrate to USA and live in Minnesota and vote for Keith Ellis. Dont forget to enjoy welfare systems of Europe and make sure you rape Swedish infidel girls.
Do not worry white people are forgiving. They will say 'Not all muslims are bad'.

That reminds me, isn't it about time we took the Church of St. Sophia back? Free Constantinople!

Paolo,
Perhaps the Catholic Church was holding out hope that they would convert a few of the Somalis if they had a presence there.

Irrespective of whether it was being used or not, and irrespective of the character of the person who built it, this church was a visible, physical reminder of something un-Islamic in the history of Somali - of a brief moment when Christians could worship in public, and when some few Somalis did, in fact, convert to Christianity.
And so: it *had* to be destroyed, and it *was* destroyed, with vicious satisfaction: just as so many thousands upon thousands of other relics or traces of despised 'jahiliyya', of anything pre-Islamic or un-Islamic, have been destroyed by Muslims in the course of their 1350 year career of blind supremacism.
This Catholic church, a disused ruin, *had* to be obliterated, erased from view and from memory; precisely as the 58 synagogues in the Old City, the historic Jewish Quarter, of Jerusalem, were destroyed, some of them blown up with dynamite or bulldozed, after the Jordanian Muslims took control in 1948 and drove out every last Jew. (There is an account of the beginning of that ecstasy of destruction, in John Roy Carlson's 'From Cairo to Damascus'). This church in Kismayo was destroyed, just as Joseph's Tomb has been destroyed by the 'Palestinian' Arab Muslims, in Shechem, and as the antiquity-saturated soil of parts of the Temple Mount is dug up, removed, and dumped.
Islam, perhaps the most pathologically narcissistic ideology that humans have ever invented (self-obsessed to the point of total autism) seems to be unendurably humiliated and offended by the existence of anything other than itself, offended to the point of blind rage even by the merest physical trace or relic of there ever having been, anywhere, anything other than itself.
