Kuwait: Music concert "abruptly" terminated after female fan hugs and kisses male singer

What do Malaysia and Kuwait have in common? "Uncontrolled" women -- singers or, as in this story, fans -- have a curious way of leading to canceled concerts. They also, coincidentally enough, have Islam in common, for what that's worth...

"Female fan's kiss ends music concert in Kuwait," from the Associated Press, October 6 (thanks to Kyros):

KUWAIT CITY (AP) — A Kuwaiti official says authorities abruptly ended a music concert by an Egyptian singer in this conservative Muslim country when a young female fan jumped on stage, hugged the male singer and gave him a kiss.

Qanas al-Adwani, who heads the government department that monitors public entertainment, says the girl's behavior at Friday's concert "defied the conservative traditions" of Kuwait.

Al-Adwani also said Sunday that the fan's behavior broke controls on public entertainment, which were imposed by influential Muslim fundamentalists after they failed in 1997 to ban concerts altogether. Concerts have to be licensed by the government, and monitors from the Information Ministry watch the crowd to make sure nobody stands up to dance.

I guess that was one ultra-dedicated groupie.

Not that funny, I know. I wonder what her punishment was and if she was even aware of what the consequences for her display of admiration might be?

Second thought - that really sucks! To rob people of the freedom of taking joy in simple HUMAN experiences such as music and dancing, art. They are robbing themselves of their own humanity.

Just as with Al-Sauds, petro-dollars, not 'freedom and democracy, has brought Al-Bushs, the leaders of 'freedom and democracy' (easier to get votes, that way) close to Al-Sabahs, if you see the irony.

Robert,

Please keep an eye on this story. There is likely to be more unhappy news to come about the fate of this unfortunate woman.

It is pretty easy to see that much of popular music and its performance is geared to appealing to female sexuality.

Excited, "overly" expressive fans go with the territory. Are you old enough to remember those surprising 50's/60's newsreels of crowds of young women screaming and swooning over Sinatra, Presley and the Beatles?

The difference here is that we discuss it as a matter of taste and cultural norms -- personal limits and the quality of serious relationships. We write opinions. Some of us like it and some do not.

Is the rock phenomenon rocking the social boat? Maybe so. We'll work it out. There are plenty of sensible women who won't sacrifice their chances of marriage and family for some sexy music CS's. They'll figure out the answer and tell their freinds and daughters.

They see it as grounds to cancel a concert, if not actually putting people in jail.

Do I see a different attitude toward female sexuality here? Hmmmmmmm ... I wonder.

How about the rights of the individual?

Nothing is free in this life. You pay a price for anything you want to have. And it is clear that the mohammedan cultures are unwilling to pay much, if anything, even for the right to listen to the music you like.

Social disorder? Cancel everybody's rights! Now! We won't tolerate disorder (read, my-personal-control).

Intellectual and emotional freedom means nothing to them. Do you think we are winning hearts and minds?

I say we air-drop a few tons of Rolling Stones and Madonna CD's. Maybe some Britney Spears and Boys to Men too.

Where their unmentionables go their hearts and minds will follow.

We have the superior culture. And that's why they fear us.
